What does it mean to be flexible? Many bendy people can be stiff in their minds. And many physically inflexible people can be quite open in their hearts. _ Yoga is not just about bending. There’s more to the practice than the physical. And it’s also totally ok to enjoy and love the physical aspect of the practice. I for one love how my body feels when I’m more flexible. It’s just that yoga is more than a stretch and bend session. It’s up to each of us to take that deeper dive into the heart of yoga. I was never a dancer, never a gymnast, not a cheerleader, never even on a sports team. I walked into a yoga class when I was 19 thinking I was going to learn to stand on my head. More than 20 years later, I am still practicing. _ While not every body will do every pose, every human being can practice yoga. At its essence yoga is a practice that teaches you how to be be whole and complete, to befriend the body and mind and to realize the true nature of the self within. Whether you’re next to a beautiful mountain lake or practicing in a small space in your kitchen, the peace you find it the peace within. Yes, there are some places that are more conducive to deep spiritual work (and @nosenyoga is one such place). That soft Nordic light speaks to my soul. I am in many ways softer than I once was. It’s not weakness, or quitting, but a deep feeling of being ok with who I am and thereby also who and what the world is, at least as I see it through my own eyes. Is it soul that seems to shine through? Is it a more authentic vibration? Maybe so. And maybe it’s just two and a half decades of practice showing their results. I always say that yoga works when an experience of peace emanates outward and infuses every moment of life. This flexibility has taken lots of patience and work for me. I was not naturally open in the straddle position. My inner thighs are just naturally tight. After many years, it’s a bit better. Are there any benefits to putting your leg behind your head or is it just a circus trick? _ If you’ve ever tried, you know that perhaps it’s a bit of both. The journey of trying is more important than if you ever manage to actually put the leg behind the head. And, just because you can achieve the physical pose doesn’t mean you’ve learned the deeper lesson of yoga. _ So if you’re working on this asana, my advice to you is to be patient and focus on the subtlety of the inner work. Find and trust your body intelligence and don’t force it. Work with good technique and no expectation. Then, one day, after many years, you’ll find a way to be friends with you body whether or not your leg ever finds its way to being behind the head. _ Day 10 of the #totalbodyflexibility is Eka Pada Sirsasana. What’s your why for getting on the mat? Why do you practice? _ To keep practicing beyond the novelty of alternative routes to health and spirituality requires a deep personal commitment to the inner work of awakening. If you’re in just to stretch and bend and show off what fancy shapes you can make, sooner or later the appeal of the practice will wear off. It’s in that moment when yoga begins. If you get on the mat to prove something or win approval of some sort, yoga will start to happen at the moment when you have nothing left to prove and no one left to win approval from. _ I find meaning each time I hear from students who share their experience of practice with me. During the last year and a half I’ve been flooded with messages from people who say that I’ve kept them on the yoga path through these difficult times. It’s my honor to be a guide to so many, both near and far, in person and virtually. And I want you to know that you are my why, my reason to keep teaching, keep sharing, keep going. Without your messages of positive reinforcement letting me know that what I do does in fact make a difference, I wouldn’t be here today. _ I practice for myself, for my own inner journey.
