A project I've been sitting on & thinking about for a while... just wasn't sure if I should do it or not. This book is letters for people in my life, for people that aren't in my life anymore, for people that I want back in my life. You probably could guess what these letters might be about & who the one you are reading is about. If the letter ends with Love, Doll~ then it's something meaningful to me, if it ends with Sincerely, Doll~ then it's something that still hurts, if it ends with both~ then I'm not sure how to feel.

i don’t believe that those we love are ever truly gone. i still find myself doing things the way an old lover showed me. I still tie rope the way my grandfather taught me, and i brew tea as my friend used to. i hear a specific string of piano notes, and am reminded of those nights on the back deck with my brother. the world we know is seen through cookie cutter shapes of all who have entered and left through the door to our hearts.

Bite-Sized

Between the year 1993 and 1999, barring any emergency, the only way for me to communicate with my parents during the school year was through letters. Yes, the handwritten kind. The ones where a piece of paper was physically transported thousands of miles and then hand delivered to the receiver to convey a message from the sender. It is the one where neither party was in a hurry to say or hear anything and the tease of time and space separating them was an added charm rather than a hindrance in communication. The anticipation created thus was accepted, welcomed even, in order to add ardor to the written words even if the consequences favored neither. It’s only appropriate then that at the age of an ensemble of messaging apps that encourage an instant exchange of thoughts, I talk about the three sentence letters I used to send to my parents at a time which was literally in a different millennium.

My letters contained no more than three sentences written on a prepaid postcard that cost 25p, with a cheap fountain pen which had a thick nib and bore the mark of age. The paper quality was questionable and the blue ink blotted in the shape of veins every time the nib touched it. The content was obviously as simple as a 10-year-old can produce. The sentiment, however, did the job it was supposed to do -- that is, to convey my wellbeing, and to enquire about my parents’ health. This is quite contrary to how letters and letter writing is romanticized in literature and also, in short, sums up the purpose letter writing in general serves in my life. I never quite understood the reason behind holding handwritten letters at the epitome of personal communication. While I found many of my friends filling up the space corner to corner of an inland letter, I never quite got beyond a postcard which did the job just as well in a quarter of the price.

One can only imagine my wonder when I watch a movie or read a book that is set in modern times and glorifies letters. On some occasions due to lack of timely communication, situations escalate to an almost laugh-worthy sequence of events. Eventually, the hero has to jump through hoops, sometimes literally, to make up for all the miscommunication or the lack thereof. When picking up the phone and simply calling the other person or even texting could have saved both of them a whole lot of trouble, they prefer older, slower and, frequently ineffective alternatives - all the things that modern communication methods have solved. We as a race have lived through the time when there were no better alternatives. So, when Hemingway wrote the letters we cherish reading, he didn't have an option of picking up his mobile phone and call his friends across the globe. That’s not the case anymore.

Other than the fact that it has made massive progress in technology, modern communication modes solve the basic features archaic modes severely lacked. Speed, clarity, an opportunity for quick correction etc. etc. One can argue that those very features that are making communication easy are also making it less valuable. One can certainly argue that we have a problem of over communication through the myriad of options available on our smartphones. Those are new and probably real problems that came with advancement but, I think we as a race have moved on from focusing on the long, story oriented exchange of thoughts which took forever to unfold and resolve, to bite-sized, easy to digest thoughts which is much more likely to resolve quickly so that people can move on to the next thing. In other words, modes of communication have kept up with the pace of our lives. I for one am fully embracing the change and moving on. Are you?

I love addressing letters when I have no idea who it’s to.  It’s fun to address them to “gentleperson”.  Like, what if they’re having a bad day?  They’re sifting through all these letters that say Sir/Madam or “To whom it may concern” and they see my letter and they’re like “They get me! I’m gentle as fuck!”
