THE MAN IN THE SKY - Part 1
Every now and then, Gotham City is hit by a threat that isn’t a simple maniac in a sharp suit with a gun. Sometimes, though quite rarely, that sharp-suited criminal will be armed with a giant mech modeled after an action figure that’s almost as tall as a 50-story skyscraper. That’s what Batman and the entire Batfamily had to fight when Gotham City got its most eccentric and dangerous tourist, The Toyman. A giant mech shaped like a stereotypical superhero action figure stomped its way through the city, smashing its hands into every bank within its sight and pulling the safe out through the roof, cash and jewels raining down with the brick, mortar, and steel. It was also bulldozing every vehicle, bridge, and building in its path, as if walking through a sculpted sandbox. Batman called in every reinforcement he had, including the Stunt Team and Gentleman Ghost. Unfortunately, the mech had been built to contend with a famous hero from Toyman’s hometown of Metropolis, one that proved near-invulnerable to every weapon on Earth. Roxy Rocket tried to take the high ground with her rocket pack, but the mech back-handed her like she was a bug and sent her crashing into the side of the Gothcorp tower. Katana and Batwoman tried to cut through the mech’s hide with Tatsu’s sword, but it seems the mech was reinforced with Nth Metal, which shields against Magic, which Gentleman Ghost learned the hard way when he tried to phase into the cockpit, only to feel true pain for once in his afterlife, like touching a glowing-hot magma rock with your bare hands. Unfortunately, none of the Gotham Knights possessed superpowers, let alone super-strength, which prevented most of them from making a dent in it.
Lady Shiva had been put on crowd control along with Onyx, Killer Croc, Harley Quinn, and her daughter, Black Bat. Deciding it was time to try out a last-resort move that she learned when she was training with the League of Shadows, Shiva kissed her Black Bat on the forehead and hugged her tight, telling her how much she loved her and that she’d look for her in whatever lay next after death. With that, she used her grapple gun to swing to the top of the highest tower closest to the mech’s path. She walked to the edge of the roof and looked out over the city, the bright early-afternoon sun bathing Gotham in a light that made it seem beautiful for once. She then took off her sleeveless coat and recited an enchantment in a long-dead language she had learned from her former husband, Ra’s Al Ghul. As she did, her veins, eyes, and mouth began to glow a bright green as the Lazarus water pumped through her veins, pulsating with power. When the mech finally reached the street below her, she walked back a few paces and readied her running stance. As she charged headlong into death’s cold embrace, she screamed, “FEEL THE UNDYING LIGHT OF A MOTHER LIONESS’ TRUE LOVE!”, as she leaped with full force off the tower and down towards the mech, her body transforming into a glowing green beacon that seemed almost unstoppable. As Batman watched from the ground, he suddenly felt a different rumbling coming from above. At that moment, a white-and-green futuristic jet flew down from the sky, opened its cargo door, and out it flew 3 figures, one of them a massive man who had to be at least 15 feet tall, sculpted from muscle itself. He punched the mech so hard that its torso crumbled like silly putty. Just before Lady Shiva could complete her act of self-sacrifice, a white streak raced up a nearby building and leaped across the gap, catching Shiva and throwing her onto a nearby rooftop. Before Shiva could even register what had happened, the streak turned into a woman dressed in a white-and-purple costume, complete with a helmet with rabbit ears. She winked at Shiva before racing off. All Shiva could do was lie there in disbelief as her power fizzled out and she turned back to normal. The third figure took the high ground on another building and pulled out a specialized sniper rifle. But instead of shooting bullets, it shot short laser beams so precise that they hit the mech’s hands and feet at the exact seams, weakening them and allowing the rabbit woman to zoom around and disassemble them at the speed of hypersound, causing the mech to fall over. To cap off the spectacle, the massive, muscular man tore his way through the mech’s torso and smashed up its wiring and mechanics from the inside until he burst out through the mech’s head, like some kind of muscular brain aneurysm. All Batman, the Batfamily, and the rest of Gotham City could do was watch, absolutely dumbfounded. Once they were sure the mech was effectively dead, the 3 strangers walked towards the crowd, allowing everyone to get a good look at them, and what a sight they were.
The 15-foot-tall, muscular man was dressed in a black, sleeveless armored vest with patches of dark green, complemented by his military green camo pants and black boots. But what stood out the most was his mask, a black luchador-style mask with a white bird-shaped symbol around his green eyes. The mouth was covered by a metal mask with 2 hoses attached that slung behind his shoulder and attached to his wrists, which explained where his super strength came from. The gunman was dressed like a gunslinger from the Old West, complete with a matching maroon duster coat and cowboy hat. But instead of his sidearms being in a waist holster, they were wrist-mounted automatic rifles. His mouth was covered by a golden bandana, with his right eye covered by a green-scope monocle. The third member was certainly the most flamboyantly dressed, wearing a white full-body suit accented with purple and pink, complete with a matching jacket with a mink-fur collar. Her helmet was fashioned after rabbit ears, though folded backwards to accentuate her speed. It only took a minute for them to be absolutely swarmed by the press and everyone else, with Batman and his Batfamily left behind. Lady Shiva soon climbed down to join them, every inch of her body sore from her attempted suicide move. As the crowd surrounded the three, the white-and-green jet descended from the sky and landed in the street. The back hatch opened, and out it flew a flurry of green projected lights and white smoke. Visible through it was a bald figure walking through the smoke until it entered the city proper, revealing itself to be Lex Luthor.
Luthor strutted out of the jet and towards the 3 new heroes with a confidence that could put Bruce Wayne to shame, which was complemented by his sharp-as-a-razor white-and-green pinstriped suit with a green double-breasted waistcoat, purple shirt, wing-tipped shoes, and a white tie. He then bowed before the audience and introduced himself and his colleagues by their names: Bane, Deadshot, and White Rabbit. He told the crowd that Lexcorp is dedicated to the safety of the United States of America and was inspired by Toyman’s recent disappearance from Metropolis to form his squad of super-soldiers to hunt him down and bring him to justice. Upon seeing all of the damage wrought in the wake of his attack, Luthor proclaimed that Lexcorp was stretching his reach into Gotham City, promising that the city would finally have superior protection that an “Urban-Nightmare-Vampire-Ninja Man” karate chopping muggers and madmen for sport. To cap off his speech, he called the squad of 3 by their official title, “The Sentinels”. Batwoman walked up behind her cousin and put her hand on his shoulder to whisper in his ear, “Bruce, what the Hell just happened?”, to which Bruce responded with a dumbfounded, “I think we’re being replaced.” As the crowd erupted into thunderous applause, Batman noticed that Bane was staring him down, as if he knew something about him. It was then that Batman realized what was going on and began formulating a plan. “Or at least, they think they can. But if I’ve learned anything, it’s that our city doesn’t take kindly to frauds.”
