Bonjour! There’s something that’s been confusing me lately about the difference between « le » and « l’ » and i was wondering if you could help me out. What I’ve noticed is that sometimes in front of words beginning in H « l’ » is used(l’habitude, l’histoire) and sometimes its « le »(le homard, le hibou), is there a reason for this, or a way to tell which article should be used where? Merci.
Hello,
I wrote a post about this years ago! There are obviously exceptions to this rule: French was regulated in the 1600s by the French Academy but is originally a distorted version of Latin created by uneducated commoners, with each region having their own pronunciation and therefore spelling. Certain things won't make sense.
But most times, looking at the origin of the word will tell you what to do: le h- words are Germanic, l'h- words Latin.
You can typically make an educated guess by looking at the meaning. The Romans were intellectuals who sat and debated and the Franks nomads who lived on horses and survived by being crafty.
Therefore, a birch tree is le h- words and a man a l'h- word (l'homme, el hombre, il uomo).
Another tip: ask yourself if not using "le" would create a homophone and make communication difficult. La hauteur (the height, from the Latin "alto" and the Frankish "hauh") cannot have a muted h- to avoid confusion with l'auteur (the male writer, from the Latin "auctor"). Similarly, "les héros" (the heroes) cannot have a liaison to avoid sounding like "les zéros" (the losers).
Hope this helps! x

Here are the results of the last poll, and boy was it close! Rung ended up claiming victory but TFP Ratchet very nearly caught him several times, and quite a few bots came in not too far behind for a fairly divided race. I say again, I love the data I get from these!
Without further ado, some fluff. Reader is a liaison on the Lost Light, which is stopping by Earth for official reasons.
