Night time reading. My husband is reading a book called “My Brother Charlie” which is a book about a girl and her autistic brother. It explains how Charlie says I love you in different ways. This was one of those books on the stands when you walk into the library. I love the Chicago public library. They have so many resources (like the craft kits I picked up) and such a great selection of books. I’m constantly in awe of the library for all they do for the communities they’re in. It hurts my soul that not everyone has access to books the way we do but I also really appreciate that we live in this great city. So it was pointed out to me...

I helped inspire a creative writing club in my home town. Actually two, one was made for kids, one was made for adults. It all started by me loving writing. Well, so my 4-H leader helped us start a creative writing project for the county. So because of me, we had a new project. Then, we started meeting at the library, and we decided to open it up to all kids in the county. And then the 4-H leader also started an adult club as well. I think it’s cool how we got something creative started for our county, when so many creative things are being pulled from children.

Rubber bands are great to lots of things, but they don’t have a place in Special Collections or Archives!

Rubber bands are made from natural rubber.  As rubber ages, it becomes dry and brittle.  When exposed to heat and humidity, rubber becomes soft and sticky.  In this example, a rubber band around a DVD box must have gotten warm and sticky.  It stuck to the paper box (and the box stored next to it), and later dried out and became a hard, powdery mess.  It will be difficult to remove without causing damage to the item.

If you need to hold an item together because it has loose parts, it is preferable to use unbleached cotton tying tape.
