A few months ago, I saw a librarian suggest on twitter to enter and leave the building through the public entrance. Since starting this job, I'd always used the staff entrance, which is where the lockers for the circ staff are. But as I don't have or need a locker, there isn't any real reason for me to use that entrance, so I decided to take the suggestion and start using the main front door.

I think the point of the original suggestion was so you could see the library through the eyes of your patrons-- how displays look, signage, is the building warm and welcoming? And I do notice that stuff more now, though as primarily a library administrator now, it's not entirely in my purview. 

But where this new habit has helped AMAZINGLY is in getting face time with my coworkers. I work on the third floor, and I am a department of 1.5 (I  have an assistant but she also works elsewhere sometimes), so it has been hard to really get to see my coworkers that often and feel integrated with the library as a whole. But walking through in the morning gives me the chance to say hi to everyone who is here early, and on quite a number of occasions, given me a face-to-face conversation in lieu of an email. It is the NUMBER ONE step I've taken to feeling more at home here, in fact. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Do any of y'all have strategies like this to keep you involved in your library when you don't necessarily work with the public?

3 Questions for Library Policies

Obviously as a reference librarian I'm not in a position where I really affect library policymaking, but I still think it's something all library workers should be in the habit of thinking critically about on a regular basis. I'm less interested in specific policies, or even policymaking in general, than I am in what goes in to determining the rightness or wrongness of a given policy or decision. I came up with this simple set of questions to pose when considering any kind of policy-type decision: 1) is it likely to hinder you or a colleague's ability to help patrons? 2) is it likely to enhance you or a colleague's ability to help patrons? 3) is it likely to have no effect on you or a colleague's ability to help patrons? If you answered yes to 1), then the behavior should be discouraged in a policy. If you answered yes to 2), then the behavior should be encouraged in a policy. If you answered yes to 3), then chances are the behavior falls outside the scope of policy making and is therefore up to the discretion of each employee.

Exactly. I’m in the same boat - so many other millennials just seem so entitled, and want to skip hard work of any kind. I imagine you’ve already addressed it, but have you tried sitting down with your P-Prof. and showing her your metadata and why?

Yup, been done. 

Showed her exactly where to look, where I'm seeing the most errors.  Told her the system will email her, and if she doesn't see the email, she should check her junk mail (it kicks out an address that Outlook sees as spam but our industrial sized spam checker doesn't) and if it's not in her mail, she should check the back end of the site and if it's not there, try re-uploading. but she won't try re-uploading until I specifically tell her to.  I get that it is frustrating.  I've had to do this myself, but you just have to keep chuggin' through because it's not like it's going to go away.

Reflections on Migrating to WorldShare Management Services

We are six months into our library’s migration from SirsiDynix’s Symphony system to OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services (WMS) which seems like a good time to stop and reflect on our decision to make this change. Did we make the right decision? Any system migration involves a lot of work and such a decision should not be made without serious consideration. The costs are even higher when one has selected a system still under development. The costs for me have included getting a whole year behind in my other projects and repeating much of the electronic resources management implementation I had just completed in Serials Solutions the year before. And then there is the suffering caused by the bleeding-edge phase of product development.

Any way you look at it, WMS is a young product which is still under development. There are some definite negatives to this. We get to help OCLC troubleshoot bugs, which eats up more time than I would like. OCLC implementation staff were up front with us, telling us not to underestimate the amount of time it would take to learn a new system and rethink workflows. WMS is a completely new visioning of what an integrated library system should be, incorporating not only traditional modules like acquisition, circulation, course reserves, and cataloging, but also electronic resource management tools like a license manager and knowledge base into a single package. Workflows have been streamlined to create efficiency and build on the advantages of shared data in the cloud. But the trouble is, sometimes it feels like the workflow has been streamlined too much and pieces we would really like to have are still missing.

Fortunately, OCLC’s WMS team is a wonderful group of people to work with. They are friendly, responsive, and truly believe in their product. The development team works on a schedule to release upgrades and enhancements every three months. A “roadmap” is published so that we know what changes are coming in the next three to nine months. The implementation team and support team both encourage us to make enhancement requests and they try their best to help us with work arounds to keep our work running until enhancements can be released.

So do I still think we made the right decision to change? For now, yes. I’m still anxious for the further development and stabilization of WMS. But I definitely appreciate the efficiency created by having all aspects of our collection management, whether print or electronic, in one place. I also appreciate OCLC’s business model which packages all services together for a reasonable price which helps me provide my library patrons with better service than we could otherwise afford. And I really appreciate the positive attitude of OCLC’s WMS team which makes me feel empowered to both provide feedback and to utilize WMS to its fullest capability.
