Canon Grimm Variants in RWBY (Per RWBY Wiki)

Virtual and Artificial Grimm from the Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen crossover films are mentioned on the wiki but exist in a separate crossover continuity involving the DC Universe. They are not part of the core Remnant storyline and are treated as non-main-canon extensions.

Focusing strictly on canon elements from the main series and officially recognized side media like Grimm Eclipse:

Mutant Grimm (From RWBY: Grimm Eclipse)

These are the only explicitly modified/man-made variant Grimm in core canon. Created by Dr. Merlot (founder of Merlot Industries) using a glowing green serum derived from a mysterious substance on his remote island lab. Merlot survived the fall of Mountain Glenn and continued his experiments to "advance" Remnant through Grimm research.

Characteristics:

Superior to normal Grimm in strength, size, durability, and abilities.

Unique green glow: Eyes, markings, internal structures, and crystalline spikes (resembling glowing green crystals/Dust-like bones) instead of the standard red.

New capabilities: Explosive self-destruction (e.g., on death or proximity), ground-spike waves, poison projectiles, burrowing, spawning other Grimm, etc.

Known Types:

Mutant Beowolf: Larger, aggressive; slams ground to create crystal spike waves; explodes on defeat.

Mutant Creep: Burrow and charge explosively; self-destruct on impact/death; green spikes and multiple eyes.

Mutant Death Stalker: Enormous boss variant; fires poison from stinger, creates rock pillars, burrows, spawns minions.

Control: Obey Merlot (via his experiments); not confirmed to fall under Salem's influence like standard Grimm.

These are crossover-specific, created by a digital Arthur Watts and Kilg%re on Earth.

In summary, per the canon wiki, the only human-engineered enhanced Grimm variants are Merlot's Mutants—glowing green, explosive/crystal-powered superiors that pose a unique scientific threat separate from Salem's mystical hybrids. Okay literally I’m living for Ren’s new semblance upgrade cause it makes so much SENSE! And it kinda makes me wonder if the reason he’s been acting the way he has the past couple volumes is because he started to feel the emotions of others around him but he didn’t recognize that those feelings aren’t his own? Like all that negativity that he must have been feeling was probably so confusing for him because he most likely didn’t understand that his semblance was evolving into empathy, and that now he can see the colored petals he finally realizes that all these different emotions are coming from others?? Idk I’m just fascinated by Ren in general so I think his new development was really cool 🥰

Also side note does this mean Ren is colorblind and the first time he is truly seeing color is when he reads the ace ops after coming to terms with his emotions and appreciation of his friends?? Cause if so I’m HERE FOR IT
