Mutant Grimm
Virtual Grimm
Artifical Grimm
Canon Grimm Variants in RWBY (Per RWBY Wiki)
The RWBY canon, as detailed on the official RWBY Wiki (rwby.fandom.com), recognizes several types of modified or variant Grimm beyond the standard wild Creatures of Grimm. These include natural variations (e.g., alphas, elders), hybrids (like The Hound or Cinder's Shadow Hand), and experimentally altered ones. The primary source for artificial modifications in the main continuity is RWBY: Grimm Eclipse, an official Rooster Teeth game with a story written in collaboration with series writers Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross, placing it canonically between Volumes 2 and 3.
Virtual and Artificial Grimm from the Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen crossover films are mentioned on the wiki but exist in a separate crossover continuity involving the DC Universe. They are not part of the core Remnant storyline and are treated as non-main-canon extensions.
Focusing strictly on canon elements from the main series and officially recognized side media like Grimm Eclipse:
Mutant Grimm (From RWBY: Grimm Eclipse)
These are the only explicitly modified/man-made variant Grimm in core canon. Created by Dr. Merlot (founder of Merlot Industries) using a glowing green serum derived from a mysterious substance on his remote island lab. Merlot survived the fall of Mountain Glenn and continued his experiments to "advance" Remnant through Grimm research.
Characteristics:
Superior to normal Grimm in strength, size, durability, and abilities.
Unique green glow: Eyes, markings, internal structures, and crystalline spikes (resembling glowing green crystals/Dust-like bones) instead of the standard red.
New capabilities: Explosive self-destruction (e.g., on death or proximity), ground-spike waves, poison projectiles, burrowing, spawning other Grimm, etc.
Known Types:
Mutant Beowolf: Larger, aggressive; slams ground to create crystal spike waves; explodes on defeat.
Mutant Creep: Burrow and charge explosively; self-destruct on impact/death; green spikes and multiple eyes.
Mutant Death Stalker: Enormous boss variant; fires poison from stinger, creates rock pillars, burrows, spawns minions.
Control: Obey Merlot (via his experiments); not confirmed to fall under Salem's influence like standard Grimm.
Weaknesses: Unknown specific vulnerabilities beyond standard Grimm traits (no Aura/soul, attract to negative emotions). Silver Eyes effect is unconfirmed, but as Grimm-based, they likely share core weaknesses. Exploitable weak points exist (e.g., Mutant Death Stalker's patterns).
Merlot's mutants represent human attempts to engineer Grimm, making them more predictable and powerful tools compared to wild ones.
Other Canon Grimm Variants (Non-Modified)
For comparison, natural or Salem-engineered variants in the main series:
Alpha/Elder Variants: Larger, more armored (e.g., Alpha Beowolf, Cenitaur evolution from Sentinel).
Hybrid Grimm: Salem's creations blending human/Faunus with Grimm.
The Hound: Silver-Eyed Faunus core; intelligent, speech-capable, shapeshifting (humanoid, canine, winged), partial Silver Eyes resistance.
Cinder's Shadow Hand: Grafted Grimm arm; stretchable, absorptive, magic-channeling; vulnerable to Silver Eyes and no Aura protection.
Seers: Tentacled communicators for Salem.
Monstra: Whale-like siege beast producing Grimm Liquid rivers.
Possession-Type: Geists possess objects (e.g., Arma Gigas from Schnee Dust Company experiments).
Environmental Adaptations: E.g., Ice Beowolves in Solitas.
Key Notes on Canon Status
Mutant Grimm are canon via Grimm Eclipse's official integration.
No "Virtual Grimm" (digital/glitching, Dust-absorbing, one-hit fragile) or fully "Artificial Grimm" (programmable, hero-counter variants like Kryptonite-producing Nidhogg, shields, revival, goop death) exist in the main canon. These are crossover-specific, created by a digital Arthur Watts and Kilg%re on Earth.
In summary, per the canon wiki, the only human-engineered enhanced Grimm variants are Merlot's Mutants—glowing green, explosive/crystal-powered superiors that pose a unique scientific threat separate from Salem's mystical hybrids. They highlight themes of forbidden experimentation, contrasting Salem's ancient control over natural Grimm. If future volumes reference Merlot or mutants, it could expand this further!

I feel like people aren't really talking enough about how rushed through Volume 9 was. There were SO MANY things that really should've had more attention this volume that were just brushed away.
Let's focus on Jaune for now though.
He spent like 20 YEARS alone in the Ever After, and the only thing that's talked about is his time with Alyx and Lewis? That couldn't have been more than a week.
Where did he get his armor/How did it get improved? Why did he let it rust? How much have his fighting skills improved, if at all? How did he keep Crescent Rose so clean? How often have he and the Jabberwalker fought? How did he meet Juniper? How did that companionship develop? What are some of the other Acres he explored and mapped? What's in the ones that were mentioned? Etc.
Not to mention all the questions about his mental state. That's another laundry list.
CRWBY will also likely ignore the vast, vast majority of Jaune's experiences, and the consequences of them in Volume 10 and on. Which bothers me quite a bit. I hope they don't, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they do.
Volume 9 was very enjoyable, definitely my favorite post-Volume 3. But it was just not enough, especially with that MASSIVE gap between Vol 8 and 9.
I don't entirely blame CRWBY though. I'm pretty sure they were making the Justice League crossover at the same time.
