Wasted Mountains The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “People will come on the Day of Judgement with good deeds like the mountains of Tihaamah and Allah will make their deeds like scattered dust.” The Companions (radi Allahu anhum) asked: “Will they not be Muslims?” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied: “Of course! They will have prayed as you pray, they will have fasted as you fast, they will have spent in charity from their excess wealth and will have given their portion of the night (Tahajjud). However, when they were alone they would violate the Sanctuary of Allah (i.e. trespass into what is unlawful).” [Ibn Majah] A hypocrite undertakes actions for the sake of people and reputation. He behaves differently when people are not around to witness his deeds. The purpose of his performing good deeds is to win acclaim from people for them. It is important for him to have his good deeds witnessed and known. Why should Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) reward deeds that are done not for Him but for other people? Good deeds should be done only for Allah if the reward is desired from Him. We ask Allah to purify our intentions and save us from showing off and from seeking fame. This is the most dangerous of diseases because when a servant is inflicted with it, it corrupts all his actions.
