BEHOLD, MY HTTYD OPINIONS. if you scroll even further you get to also read my random thoughts about The Hidden World movie.

My fun little thoughts about the Hidden World movie:

Generally speaking, courtship behaviors are largely instinctual in most animals. So maybe part of the reason Toothless was so confused about how to court the Lightfury because she wasn’t another Nightfury.

The first time I watched HTTYD 3 I was very much under the impression that the Lightfury had been in captive for a pretty decent amount of time. When the Lightfury is brought to Grimmel the general dudes even say “We brought your favorite bait” which implies that Grimmel has used Lightfuries to lure Nightfuries before. Which then led me to the assumption that Grimmel had been using this specific Lightfury for a least a few years.

This also explained to me why the Lightfury kept coming back to find Toothless instead of going back to the Hidden World. She’s been with Grimmel so long she didn’t know what else to do, or alternatively she didn’t want to lead Grimmel to the Hidden World. It also explained why she was almost luring Toothless into Grimmel’s initial trap.

The one thing I never really got was how they ever got a Lightfury. I’ve been under the assumption they’re entirely endemic to the Hidden World, and there wouldn’t be any real reason for them to leave.

Would Toothless be miserable in the Hidden World? He’s built for lots of flying and his main form of attack and presumably hunting is diving from up high. You really can’t do that in a cave, even if the Hidden World is big.

WHAT ABOUT THE FUCKING TIMBERJACKS MAN? WHAT ABOUT FLIGHTLESS DRAGONS LIKE SPEEDSTINGERS??? THE CANNIBAL DRAGONS?!?

Also I know Toothless has the Berk dragons go to the Hidden World but what about literally all the other dragons?

After this I’m gonna redesign the Nightlights with my head canon stuff in mind. And maybe Thunder. I haven’t watched the Nine Realms but I’ve seen pictures of Thunder and HOLY SHIT HE’S UGLY IM SORRY THUNDER BUT YOU GOT DONE DIRTY

Ok ok I know I’ve like exclusively posted Sonic stuff but like… I am in multiple fandoms. Including HTTYD!! It occupies so much of my brain.. live laugh love HTTYD. And the thing, or specifically character, I love most about HTTYD is my beloved traumatized glittery beluga with wings, the LightFury. I think about her daily. She seriously might be one of my favorite fictional characters EVER. That being said… she is far from a perfect character. Dreamworks did my girl DIRTY. Especially in the Writing department, so I’ve been working on a concept for a HTTYD 3 rewrite in the back of my head on and off for a few years now, and eventually I decided that despite my love for the Lightfury’s design (not the reason her design is the way it is, just the design.) it could use an upgrade…

So here it is!

I think I Indra ate with this one! This is technically the second version of my redesign for her, so this is a redesign of my old redesign… And if you think about it the OG lightfury is a redesign too.

I wanted to keep a lot of the features of her original design, while also giving her similarities to her oh so beloved, and absolutely stunning, scrapped concept design. While also making sure she doesn’t just look like a re-colored nightfury because frankly that’d be a disaster as far as I’m concerned. I could go on about why a female Nightfury wouldn’t have been a good choice in my opinion but that’s for another day.

Onto my through process for her design:

I filled her out a little more because she did look a little thin, though in my rewrite concept she wouldn’t stay filled out for very long. She’d be pretty thin for at least a good portion of the movie, poor girl..

a lot of the rest of this is explained briefly in the image above but I like to talk so I’m gonna reiterate it anyways! I made her head a little longer (not as long as a nightfury’s though) and made her eyes smaller. I imagine this version of the LightFuries are made for spending most of their days in the sky, camouflaging with their sparkly white and blue scales so their prey (mostly birds probably) doesn’t see them coming. She’s no longer a cave dweller as the hidden world probably doesn’t exist in this AU so her eyes don’t need to be big and round, though it was very cute.

She also has more feelers/“ear nubs” that are a little longer than before. She probably “sees” mostly with these when it’s too dark or she’s in an unfamiliar space, etc. They’re not as long or as many as a nightfury’s but I figure they’re more sensitive. This also gives her a distinct silhouette from toothless which I believe is very important. Her wings are also significantly bigger.

Her wings were a little small and I figured the bigger wings worked better as she’d be the sky most of the day typically. Her back fin also splits the way Toothless’ back spikes/plates do from HTTYD 2 onwards, so she too can make those sharp turns.

Her tail fins also split, similar to how a stormcutter separates its two sets of wings. I figure this would help her steer better, maybe? I hope? Lemme know if I am so completely wrong that a design change is necessary. It looks cool at least. It makes sense to me! Once again makes her look unique from Toothless which, again, I believe is incredibly important.

General story wise:

I haven’t drawn it yet, but after Grimmel gets her hands on her she becomes significantly thinner and is covered in scars and injuries. I want it to be clear why she’s afraid of humans both to the hypothetical audience, but also to the characters, especially Hiccup. I haven’t exactly decided where all the scars are going to be but there’s porbbaly at least one prominent on her face and more on her back from curling up into a ball. Because of this she ends up asking very skittish and fearful, but under it all she’s a sweet, loving dragon with quite the sense of humor. Really she just wants to be safe and happy. And thankfully she learns to trust again eventually and lives a long, happy life with her mate, children and his odd little human friends on new Berk.

I’ll definitely post more about this AU more in the future! Let me know your thoughts! And feel free to ask questions, I LOVE to talk. I really need a name for the LightFury, and her most common fandom given nickname, “Luna” just won’t do. I never liked that name for her. So suggestions are requested.

I’ll get back to my Sonic redesigns now (probably). Knuckles and Rouge are planned to be next!!

Also as an addition, here’s my old redesign of her! It was MUCH similiar.

An experimental little sketch of Toothless and his adopted daughter Crescent. This would be sometime in the future from my concept of httyd3, as Crescent is a preteen. 

She loves exploring and is a lot sillier than Toothless, often coming across as a little...well, stupid. She tends to affectionately chew on creatures she likes, unfortunately for Toothless here.
