Okay so the 2024 Le Comte de Monte Cristo movie is a beautiful and stunning and fantastic movie. I think it’s a great movie.
I just not sure i think it’s a good Count of Monte Cristo story. It really does lose itself in the despair of the plot and it makes the ending feel hollow. The Count doesn’t have much of an opportunity to do good deeds for the sake of doing good deeds.
I think in terms of adaptation, while there is a lot to pick apart in all versions since it’s impossible to cover all the book does in a movie, despite that I do feel the 1975 is still the strongest adaptation Ive seen so far because it does allow itself moments to be silly and BOY was the book full of gags and silliness for the sake of bringing levity to what is easily a very depressing tale. The book didn’t want to you to just sit in melancholy and despair, it wanted you to feel the full range of emotions all the characters where feeling over the course of the story, and the moments where it was playful or earnest and sweet or vulnerable were the ones that stuck with me the most.
Also not having the count clearly say he forgives Mercedes at the party and instead leave the question unanswered is cruel.
