Hello mutual, I have a question, what is mcr? Always thought it's a band, but it looks like there is some complex lore and even fan au's (?) and since I like loredumping on my interests I thought maybe you would like to talk about it. Don't feel pressured to do so though. Have a nice day ofc :))
hello mutual!! You have no idea how happy this ask made me lol I would be delighted to tell you
the short version is, My Chemical Romance are a rock band formed in 2001 after the lead singer and frontman, Gerard Way, witnessed the 9/11 World Trade Center attack and had a quarter(? we can hope)-life crisis. They made four studio albums (most famous being The Black Parade in 2006), became both famous and infamous for their earnest lyrics that didn't shy away from the ugly parts of life as well as their theatrical presence, pissed off a lot of homophobes, transphobes and satanic-panic pushers, and then infamously split in 2013 to preserve the well-being of the band members. Rumors swirled of a reformation for years until finally in 2018 they announced they were finally getting back together. the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the reunion tour, but when it came, venues sold out and the band did some really crazy spectacular stuff, and pissed off even more transphobes and homophobes. Currently, they're touring again with a revival of their Black Parade tour with even more crazy spectacle and theatrics. more on that later, in
*drumroll*
the in-depth lore! (under the cut because it is a LOT to unpack. this is just the album lore, not even getting into behind-the-scenes drama and extended "canon" of things like Danger Days).
starting off: 2001-2002. formation and the Bullets era.
shortly after 9/11/2001, Gerard Way (vocalist), Mikey Way (bassist), Ray Toro (guitarist), and Matt "Otter" Pelissier (drummer) formed the band My Chemical Romance. the band's name came from a book Mikey found while working in a bookshop - the title of the book was "Ecstasy: Three Tales Of Chemical Romance", and everyone thought that sounded badass. They started putting together demos, got a record deal, and eventually added a second guitarist to the lineup - Frank Iero, rhythm guitarist formerly of local band Pencey Prep, and MCR's number one fan. Frank played on two songs on their first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.
one important thing about MCR is they LOVE a concept album. most of their work exists to tell a story - Bullets didn't have as solid of a through-line as later albums, but there were very prominent themes throughout the songs, a lot of self-contained stories, and two songs that most fans agree tie into a larger story, that of the "Demolition Lovers":
The first is Drowning Lessons, a song about either literally or metaphorically killing a woman the narrator is romantically entangled with. One lyric in particular will be important later:
"All I'm asking for is / a thousand bodies piled up / I never thought would be enough / to show you just what I've been thinking / and I'll keep on making more / just to prove that I adore". The song is considered 'cursed' by the band, and they never play it live because things always tend to go wrong when they try. Gerard has also said in the past that the lyrics feel too personal to play live.
The second song is undeniably connected to the story of the Lovers, and is even where their name came from: Demolition Lovers, the final track on Bullets. The song tells the story of a Bonnie-and-Clyde type duo of criminals going out in a hail of bullets. It's very pretty and very tragic and a good solid way to end a pretty awesome album and lead into the second! My favorite song off this album, though, is Early Sunsets Over Monroeville - the dreamy music-box guitar melodies combined with Gerard's screamy raw vocals is just. chef's kiss, you know?
2003 - Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
This album, unlike Bullets, follows a much tighter theme, and has a full storyline. the gist: a man, half of a duo of criminals, loses his partner and lover. In order to get her back, he makes a deal with Satan - if he can deliver the souls of a thousand evil men, he will be reunited with his lover (remember that line from Drowning Lessons? it's relevant now!); at the end, after killing 999 men, he realizes the final evil man he must kill to be "reunited" with his lover is himself - he can only see her once he, too, dies. The songs on this album nearly all revolve around themes of loss, disillusionment, and grief. this is in large part because the Way brothers experienced the loss of their grandmother, Elena "Helen" Rush, shortly before they began working on the album. she had instilled in them a love of music, and her loss greatly affected them both. the song Helena was written in memory of her, and she lowkey haunts the narrative a little in songs like The Ghost Of You. For the music videos of this album, the band worked with Marc Webb (director of the Amazing Spider-Man, among other things) to make videos that felt like movie trailers. My favorite is the I'm Not Okay (I Promise) video, following the band as a group of outcasts in a prep school. My favorite song off the album is It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Fucking Deathwish. I like the guitars :)
(as a sidenote, the band also released a video diary made during recording of Three Cheers: Life on the Murder Scene, following the band on their first tour and the new struggles of fame. it's very much a carefully catered-for-the-public portrayal of events, but definitely an interesting watch! it's about 2 hours long and available on YouTube)
2006 - The Black Parade
the next, penultimate, and most famous album follows The Patient - a young man dying of terminal illness, reckoning with the unsatisfying life he's lived and the regrets he has. the band went all-out, taking inspiration from Queen's rock operas and Pink Floyd's The Wall to craft the story. they also locked themselves in a fucking haunted mansion to record the album and got the shit haunted out of them!! they almost broke up!!! Mikey actually left for a while! this was also the first album recorded with Bob Bryar - the drummer who replaced Matt Pelissier after he left. Bob is a massively divisive and controversial figure in the fanbase, but he was a pretty good drummer. My favorite song off this album is either Mama or Disenchanted, which we have Mikey Way to thank for - he went around whispering the name into people's ears while they slept to try and subliminally convince them to put it on the album. crazy shit. At the end of their tour - during which they performed as if they were The Black Parade and not just My Chem performing The Black Parade - they filmed their final concert in Mexico City, releasing the video along with a live album titled The Black Parade Is Dead!. put a pin in that.
2009 - Conventional Weapons
this was the album the band planned to make, but ultimately scrapped because they thought it was too typical of the genre and they wanted to try and break conventions more. they recycled bits and pieces from the songs for their next album, and later ended up eventually releasing Conventional Weapons as a series of five vinyls with two songs each. my favorite song is either Surrender the Night or Gun.
2010 - Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys
if Black Parade is their best album, Danger Days is often considered the worst, and even bad - an opinion I DON'T SHARE. Danger Days is the fucking bomb and it's my favorite album, haters can suck an egg.
one thing about Gerard is he is a comic book NERD. this whole band are a bunch of nerds actually and it shows, but for this album especially they went all-out, leaning in hard to the concept for the music videos. Gerard dyed his hair cherry red, and the whole band traded out the dark, Gothic aesthetics for bright colors and ray guns in the California desert.
The album is themed around a world where, in the year 2019, after a series of wars that devastated much of the world, a megacorporation known as Better Living Industries controls the only habitable city in the States with an iron fist. in the surrounding deserts, rebels known as Killjoys wage war against the corporation, and one group - portrayed in the videos by the band - guard a small girl who's, for undisclosed reasons, very important and a threat to Better Living. My favorite song is either Bulletproof Heart - an absolute BANGER that's great to listen to with your car windows down - or Summertime, my favorite love song <3 honorable mention to DESTROYA , the bongos/moans song :) There are comic books written by Gerard and official-from-the-band twitter roleplays sprouting from this universe that both expand and contradict the lore established in the album/music vids, which I plan to cover in a future post! Fans were also encouraged to make up their own Killjoy characters and dress as them at concerts. also, they kicked Bob out of the band I think shortly before this album. They haven't had an "In The Band" drummer since, though their current drummer, Jarrod Alexander, has been with them a while!
The Mad Gear And Missile Kid was a funky little EP that's meant to be songs the Killjoys would listen to in-universe. My favorite song is F.T.W.W.W.
~2011 - The Paper Kingdom
the infamous scrapped album; the MCR5 that never was. this would have been another concept album, following a much darker story than the band had ever explored - a support group of parents who had lost their children, grieving and imagining their children still alive fighting battles somewhere. By this point, nearly all the band members had their own kids, and they felt the concept was too dark, depressing and close to home, so the album was shelved. But!! MCR did play a song from the album, War Beneath The Rain, live in LA two nights ago (7/26/2025), as a tribute to Doug McKean, their producer who passed in 2022.
2013 - May Death Never Stop You / Fake Your Death / breakup
on March 22, 2013, the band announced on their official blog that they would be breaking up. this was revealed to be a necessary move to preserve the health, sanity and family life of the members. Gerard Way has said it was either "break the band, or break me." They released May Death Never Stop You, which was an album compiling their greatest hits - and one new song titled Fake Your Death. not suspicious at all! The music videos featured a crumbling bust of a parade leader with 'long live the black parade' graffitied on. Put a pin in that as well!
MCRX / Living With Ghosts
years into the breakup, the band released a bunch of cryptic videos promoting…something. the fanbase got excited - was this a reunion? NO! it was a remastered version of Black Parade, featuring never before heard demos, cut songs, and alternate versions of classics like Mama and House of Wolves. a lot of people don't really consider it an album but it is to me. my favorite song is Not That Kind of Girl <3
2018-2022 - Swarm Tour and Foundations of Decay
After years of rumors, speculation, and Frank having to lie through his teeth in interviews, FINALLY the band announced that they would be reuniting, and would play the first show of their reunion tour in California in the fall of 2019. this tour ended up being delayed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. just before this tour began, the band surprise-dropped a single; The Foundations of Decay, a brand new song with a brand new sound encapsulating the band's eclectic genre-defying style. With Foundations came new themes - decay. bugs. rotting flesh. these themes were prominent in the tour, but so were some NEW concepts. crumbling cities. costumes reflecting themes of femininity and idolization. what the entire fuck are they doingggggg here!!! why are they wearing this secretary costume. why is she becoming increasingly bloody and distraught!!
2025 - Long Live The Black Parade
New content! weird cryptic YouTube videos! made-up new language! are we getting a new album? new music?? NO! it's Black Parade again!! they're doing a second Black Parade tour! this time set in a wartorn fictional European country. The Black Parade - after dying in Mexico City in 2007 - have been reanimated against their will and are forced to perform as the mouthpiece for the figureheads of the country. The secretary lady is back! She has a dog? they got a dictator and executions and extended outros and exploding clowns! and they're doing this every weekend and workshopping it as they go? and people are livestreaming it? best weekly tv show ever. truly wild stuff, it's fascinating to watch this unfold and see the band and fans having fun with these concepts <3
and that's the story so far! hope the ramble wasn't too much lol, if you have any questions on more in-depth stuff for any album or era I'd be happy to talk about it! thanks again for this ask and hope you have an awesome day 💚
i don't know why but i really like this and thought i'd share it on here too.
should i rant about what goes in my head while making this video? no. will i? yes.
basically the song is beginning middle end by leah nobel from to all the boys i've loved before part 3. this song is basically about two people falling in love from the early years of their lives. since lara jean and peter met when they were kids. but then started (fake) dating in high school and their adventure together started right then and there. anyway, watch the movies if you haven't already. this song fits lara jean and peter so well (i don't know if it was written specifically for them or not).
but daisy and sousa didnt meet when they were kids because of one obvious reason: when daisy was a kid, sousa's dead; and when sousa was a kid, daisy hadn't been born yet. they weren't supposed to meet. so their journey started off separately.
daisy's beginning in shield was rocky, to say the least. but she found a home there with coulson, fitzsimmons and may (i'll get to ward) in season 1. they bonded quite quickly, mainly daisy skye and coulson. i think it shifts when she got shot by ian quinn. everyone in the team, especially ward was terrified and angry at the situation. now. she had a relationship with miles early on in the season, which was broken off. but within the context of the song, her beginning was ward. he was her s.o. she was falling for him when she uncovered that he's hydra. add that trauma to the ones she already had prior to shield. no wonder she has trust issues.
her middle was her powers. even though the story started early in the series, it's still the middle. because she struggled with her powers throughout seasons 2 - 5. the middle would always be the bulk of it all. it's where everything happens. it's the crux of a character, of a person. it's where daisy became daisy. now, in the middle of her middle (pun very much intended), was lincoln. the first inhuman who helped her and understood her. i'm sure they've got their own problems and everything, but it doesn't change the fact that he was someone who knew what she's going through. none of her found family could help her the way he could. this is where i think it gets interesting. seasons 2 - 5, where i said was her middle, and basically the peak/climax of daisy as a character, she was falling for and fell for lincoln. it was known that daisy was still in love with lincoln in season 5. possibly around 2 years after he died. but then we found out that she had moved on from lincoln in the beginning of season 6.
season 6 and 7 is the end of her journey with the team. they're still a family. just a family who occassionally see each other. now in season 6, like i mentioned previously, it was acknowledged that daisy had moved on. the past will always be with her, no doubt. the trauma would stick. hopefully just bits and pieces. but it would still be there until she either had alzheimer's, dementia, any other retrograde amnesia injuries or diseases, or the day she died. she would never forget lincoln or ward, heck even miles. she won't forget her past. unless it was taken away from her. so, back to the topic at hand, she wanted her own fitz. she had grown from the woman she was in the beginning, she had grown from the woman and superhero that she was in the middle. she knows who she is now. with the people she worked with. and the people she calls her family. and also with anyone. daisy's ending was perfect (to me at least). she wasn't looking for love right then and there. she was burnt one too many times. but she wanted that kind of love and support. the love and support that fitz and simmons have for each other. something that daisy lacked all her life. she ended up with someone who gave her what she wanted. and what she needed.
with sousa, it's a little different. because we didn't get to see much of his background and family life. we didn't get to know what his life was like during the war and before the war. we begin to see him in the ssr. we all knew, literally everyone knew, even the characters knew that sousa's practically in love with peggy. except for maybe peggy herself. but i'm sure she had an inkling. she definitely had an inkling. but then things go on and he became chief of the west coast office and he was in los angeles while peggy was in new york. he moved on (or so we thought). he started dating violet and was ready to marry her. he told her he loved her. and he did. it's just that he was also in love with peggy. still. and violet saw that. it's as clear as day. and they broke it off.
we didn't get to see much of sousa's middle. mainly because ac wasn't renewed for a third season. which was such a waste because it ended with so many things left unanswered. but we know that between 1947 - 1955, peggy and sousa broke up. we have no idea why. we don't know if steve was back. nada. all we know is that they broke up. when did they break up? again. no idea. but we know that peggy means a lot to sousa. she's like (sorta; i don't like making comparisons but anyway) sousa's lincoln in a way (i'm not saying that they're the exact replica. daisy/lincoln and peggy/sousa are quite different. but they do have similarities. those pairings are the kind where they want to be together forever but knew that it wouldn't work; my interpretation). she didn't die, we know that. but she's sort of the one that got away. my guess is that it's because shield and the world was more important than each other. which wasn't dissimilar to daisy and lincoln's situation. so, yes. peggy's sousa's middle. she influenced him a lot. and he found himself amidst ssr and shield (just like daisy did).
sousa's end was again, perfect. he went to the future. got to see what the organisation he helped build came to be. he went on an adventure to explore space. which he would geek out over. instead of dying, he got to live. with the love of his (new) life. he may be a man out of time, but with daisy and their ragtag family, he is right where he belongs.
daisy and sousa began with "who the hell are you" and ended with "it's beautiful" (just putting this here because i love that fact).
so. they started pretty quickly, didn't they? 4 episodes in and sousa fell in love with daisy. 7 episodes in and daisy fell in love with sousa. though i doubt that they thought they're in love. but they're falling. or walking towards it. 7x03 was when they met. it's where it all began. in area 51 of all places (foreshadow much?). but what's even more interesting is that technically, they began twice. from daisy's perspective, they met in 6x13 (which plenty of people had pointed out; but @agents-of-fangirling was the most recent). even though they didn't actually meet because sousa was wearing that blue (seriously his colour really is blue) hazmat suit and daisy was disoriented (may dying and all that jazz). but from sousa's perspective, they met in 7x03. where they actually made eye contact and conversed. how many couples can say that the when of their first encounter was debatable?
now. their middle, in the video edit, i used the scene from 7x10. because i think that's a pretty good middle. they had their first first kiss. sousa had no idea that happened. yet, there he was, wanting to help. just like his time-loop self. he extended a hand and she accepted. she accepted help. do you know how much of a development that was??? because i think that it's a huge character development (i still haven't rewatched so don't take my word for it). i think that's a good depiction of their middle. oh yeah. before i forgot. they also had two first kisses. and again, i say, how many couples can say that they had two first kiss? figured i'd choose the scene in the middle of those first kisses (pun intended lmao).
sidenote: did y'all see the devastation in her eyes when sousa volunteered to stay in the 80s? or how her eyes went wide and she started to panic when he was injected in the time loops? sousa's a man of action. and when he says something, he means it. so, his constant concern over daisy and him wanting to help in any way he can, it's his love language.
and then we have their ending. the perfect end to an imperfect couple (because nobody's perfect *cue hannah montana*). daisy got sousa a typewriter. because he's from the 50s. since when did daisy buy gifts for her boyfriends/partners/lovers? and they watched e.t. together? that's normal couple things. even though they are far from normal. but they get to experience it all together. daisy didn't get to in the past. none that we know of anyway. and now she does. also, that smile when she talks about him. that fond smile that grazed her lips at the thought of him. i've never seen her smile like that before (none that i remember; and if she did, well then i'm so so happy for her). she looks happy. serene. and her saying "he's a dork" twice in the season just makes my heart burst with happiness for them.
sidenote: my headcannon is that "he's a dork" is code for "i love him too much to explain it in words."
i'd like to believe that even though it has ended, their story has just begun. they're going through their middle right now. and i hope that they won't end. in other words, their end was not an ending. it was a beginning of a new life.
as daisy said, "we're loving the journey together." keyword: journey. it's a long road up ahead. with countless of challenges and obstacles in the way. but in the end, all that matters is that they face it together.
that's it. thanks for coming to my ted talk (for those who actually read it all the way through, i love you).
I have some questions about editing, which I dont know much about apart from essays and peer reviews back in high school. So when you're editing, how do you differentiate between grammar or syntax errors and the author's style of writing?
so. something very terrible happened, which is that i typed out a huge response that was literally like fifteen very long paragraphs filled with wit and humor and charm and a great answer to your question, and then i accidentally pressed one of my bookmarks, and the page reloaded, and everything went away, and now i’m very sad. like very very sad. you don’t even know. actually, more mad than sad.
BUT i shall valiantly attempt again to answer your question, and in fact, i’ll look on the bright side, which is that the first answer was literally as long as order of the phoenix and who on earth would have read all that, so now i have a chance to sum it all up concisely and in a way that doesn’t take like a half hour to do. i prob spent even longer than a half hour on that response, but we’re not going to think about that, because that will make me mad again, which i’m trying not to be because i’m so happy you sent me this, i love the question so much, it’s not you, it’s me and the stupid refreshed page and the world really but anyway. let me breathe and not be angry. okay. i feel better. here we go again.
so i have two editing jobs, and i edit very differently for both, so i divided the first answer by each job, and i guess i’ll do that again (wow this is already becoming very long clearly i’m not taking the opportunity to make it concise but alas it’s just not in my nature ALSO I’M STILL MAD okay i’m trying not to be mad but SERIOUSLY I PUT SO MUCH HEART AND THOUGHT INTO THAT ANSWER AND IT’S GONE FOR GOD’S SAKE okay i’m breathing i’m breathing we’re good again)
job one: assistant editor at a publishing press
i just keep thinking about my previous reply and getting more pissed off oh god seriously there were like examples and now i’m just so tired this is like that one time in my first year of fic writing when i was a wee child in high school and i was writing a fic in one of my classes instead of doing math homework or some shit and i remember distinctly it was about shion and nez getting married in vegas (yeah i was stupid back then what has changed NOTHING CLEARLY) and my laptop froze and everything got deleted and i was SO MAD and had to rewrite it but this is even worse because that fic was crap and my first answer was golden OKAY BACK TO THE TOPIC
to be concise: at the press, every manuscript i edit is a book we’re going to publish. we of course have to weed out the good from the bad. recently, i’ve been one of the deciders on what is considered good enough for us to publish. we’re a small press, so we do about 6 titles per season, and we only do literary fiction. for that reason, we’re selective, and every manuscript i work with is therefore very good.
that’s not to say there’s no grammatical errors. in the publishing business, i’ve heard over and over again that good writers are never good editors, and vice versa (i very much hope this isn’t true, because i’m a fucking great editor, and i like to think that doesn’t mean i’m a bad writer).
we do several rounds of editing. the first is meant to be big picture stuff (altho really, when i read through things i automatically correct grammar mistakes as i go, so i do this in the first round too. but my boss, for example, doesn’t worry about grammar until the last proofreading round, so it’s really up to the editor and how strict the press is. i imagine a new york pub house won’t let you do whatever you want the way my press let’s me do whatever i want). but first round at my press does have to include big picture stuff, which means if any plot points need to be developed, reworked, switched around, deleted, stuff like that, it should be done here.
this round is also where i write comments in the margins to the author or my boss as i go that are often something like “meh, i don’t love this sentence, can we try it worded like this…” this gets more into your question. these are established authors, so they have an established style. i also have my own writing style. i never recommend rewording things in my style - i always make sure it’s in their style, but just clearer than it was before, or more in line with the tone i want that passage to convey, or more concise, or more elaborate, or whatever.
this applies to grammar as well. for example, the last author i worked with hated commas. this drove me crazy at first, but i quickly realized this was a stylistic thing, not a lack of comma knowledge. his writing style and his stories were very immersive and winding, and a lack of commas is great in that kind of style. example: the comma gives you a place to catch your breath in the sentence so when it’s not there you can’t breathe and you become sucked in and have no choice but to keep going in a way that makes it easy to lose your footing and stumble deeper into it without a pause so that after a point you forget that you’ve been waiting for an end at all and all that exists is the sentence and whatever plot is happening in that sentence which has completely absorbed you so you’re desperate to know what will happen next and it feels like you’re standing on the very tips of your toes stretching stretching stretching and so damn close to finding out the conclusion of this line of action or thought you’re so certain it will come soon that it’s just within reach because you’ve been holding your breath for so long you can’t possibly hold it any longer and the rest of the world doesn’t exist it’s only whatever is happening in this sentence but you don’t even remember it’s a sentence at all so that when it does end you’re startled - like waking up abruptly from a dream. punctuation can be a lot of fun, and this is why i love grammar. when you use it right, it’s invisible and makes a readable, standard piece of writing. when you play with it, you can do fantastic things to your readers’ minds and expectations because they’re so used to reading things the established way.
i think some famous artist like picasso or something had a quote that was like - the best in their craft know every single rule inside and out, and then make the decision to break them. likewise, if i think there’s a purpose to an author breaking a grammar rule, and if i think this purpose pays off, i allow it. a good editor knows when to let their authors get away with shit, and when not to.
so yeah, after the first round, i send my comments to the author, and they have to approve what i said and send their own comments on my comments and usually we argue about a few things and we go back and forth redrafting over and over, and it’s a lot of judgment calls and sometimes i have to insist that things go my way, but i always try to stick with the author’s vision and style, and only really insist on grammar things if they have to do with clarity/readability or if i can tell the author is just too deep in the story and can’t look at it the way a reader would. and that’s my job at the press.
job two: editor at an independent editing service aka developmental editor
for my second editing job, i work for an independent editing service. we’re like freelance editors, and that’s all we do - we edit, we don’t publish. this means that we take ANYTHING because we’re not trying to sell these manuscripts, we’re just trying to make money off editing them (side note - developmental editors usually make a SHITLOAD of money compared to editors of publishing houses). when i complain about manuscripts, it’s usually the ones i edit for this job, because honestly they’re usually complete crap.
i don’t know how much you know about the publishing world, so i’ll give a quick overview. it goes like this: writer writes a thing –> writer queries literary agent (aka writer asks agent to represent their thing) –> agent accepts the thing if they like it and markets it to publishing houses trying to get someone to publish it –> a publishing house accepts it if they like it and makes a contract with the agent/writer and then publishes the thing –> reader reads the thing and everyone is happy
if you don’t know anything about lit agents, they’re basically the middle man. actors have agents who find them roles in movies, and authors have agents who find publishing presses to publish their books. you don’t have to have an agent, but bigger presses (like random house/harper collins and that crowd, also known as The Big Five) sometimes won’t even look at books that aren’t taken to them by agents. that’s because big presses don’t have time to slog through bad manuscripts, and agents are picky and won’t bother showing them bad manuscripts.
which is where i come in. in this job, i’m a developmental editor, and i’m the step that occasionally comes before the lit agent. if a writer doesn’t think their book is good enough to be represented by an agent, or if they try to get it represented, but no agent wants them, they come to us. not everyone knows we exist, and i personally don’t think i’ll ever use a developmental editor. i think it’s more for beginning writers, people who don’t really know what they’re doing, or just people who don’t have confidence in their writing.
in this job, i am ruthless. the clients i work for are not established authors. they do not have a writing style, and if they do, it’s terrible and they should get a new one. i delete sentences, paragraphs, pages, even chapters without asking. in fact, i am never in contact with the clients, my boss is, so i do whatever i want. i don’t let them get away with any grammar mistakes - it’s clear they don’t know grammar rules inside and out, certainly not to the point where they should even consider breaking them. these clients hired me to make their manuscripts readable, and usually, that means drastic changes, so that’s what i do without remorse or mercy.
i don’t mean to insult people who go to developmental editors. i think it’s great that writers want to get better, but for some reason, every client i’ve worked for in this job has just been a terrible writer. like, really, really, really bad. when i reword their sentences, i do it in my own style, or whatever style i’m feeling that day, or whatever style i think will best serve the manuscript. i have been editing for a while, and i have a lot of confidence in myself as an editor, and my boss mostly lets me do whatever i want, so i decimate these manuscripts cold-heartedly. very different from high school peer reviews, where you probably were mildly kind to your classmates because, i mean, you had to see them the next day, and the days after that, so you didn’t wanna be a complete asshole even if they were the worst writers on the planet.
and that’s the sum of it. which seems like a lot, but like, i went even more in detail the first time around, if you can even imagine it (it was glorious, i tell you) so consider yourself lucky.
but seriously, thank you again for asking such a cool question - which at this point i’ve been answering for definitely over an hour ahaha but that’s okay i had fun and i love talking about editing so much!! if you read this far, i hope it was helpful!!!!

Tell me some of your fave headcanons for you and Ushio, Nero, and Murphy, and then some about your favorite AU if that would be okay!!
This is going to be long so under cut it is ♥
Well first off I love the idea of adopting like 3+ cats with Ushio (I headcanon him already having one that I refer to as Mirai but like.. instead of actual children we have cats that are our spoiled children..)
We’re that couple that are so in-love & lovey dovey that it’s disgusting. Constant pet names, he picks me up, we kiss each other a lot… everything.
Speaking of picking up… He loves it. He constantly picks me up whenever he wants to hold me or when I need something from the upper shelves.
I love the headcanon of us being a gamer couple.. just yes..
He’s very protective of me but not too possessive and I freaking love it like he walks me home when he can, sends me “did you get home safely? call me <3″ texts and keeps a lookout when I get scared in the dark. I suspect his fav thing is to hold me close after playing horror games too long and murmuring how he will protect me so I can sleep just fine.
We also love to go shopping for clothes together, like the cliche “fashion judge” kind.. I love punk/lolita clothes and I bet he loves some metalhead fashion (I mean I already headcanon him as metal music fan soo.. him in black?? Rip me)
For Nero I love the headcanon of him being a huge handholder in private when his demon arm doesn’t bother him and I LOVE holding it.. I also love to headcanon it as warm & cold at the same time due to it’s colors and almost feeling like dragon scales… or some shit… idk really but it feels really rough minus the blue part which could feel smooth. And since he has claws I feel he would be extra careful with anyone he doesn’t want to hurt but he likes to run his claws through my hair even if it is short.
I love the idea of rare, warm hugs with Nero, especially if either of us end up in a tough spot and other worries sick.
We’re more that kind of couple that only closest people know were together and don’t show affection a lot (Nero doesn’t like to show his affection much on public but won’t reject me if I initiate it) and I love the lowkey idea of us being or at least growing into a battle couple.
Also I headcanon he would get at least a bit irritated with me at first since I scream so much in fear when we fight demons (my self insert is amateur devil hunter) but he grows fond of me as Credo assigns me with Nero a lot (he keeps saying it “improves your [Nero’s] teamwork and social skills and her combat.”) and since I also headcanon that he has fought with the Order against demons from a young age he finds my fear of demons odd.
Also I love the headcanon of Nero being able to play guitar very well, I mean the air guitar taunt he does is my life.. That “CMON BABES” kills me.. Like he sometimes plays guitar to calm himself and for fun and gets flustered when I compliment him with over the top excitement.
I’m still not over how I imagined him calling me “baby girl” and “angel”… I just call him “my demon hunter” or by his name but geez I gotta make more of them.. He’s so cute when he’s embarrassed or awkward..
We compliment each other a lot, Nero likes to compliment me when I fight well and I love to compliment him on basically everything.. like nice comebacks or sweet words.. Nero’s more awkward with compliments than me.
With Murphy.. Murphy’s very tricky and honestly it saddens me greatly how hard it is for me to headcanon cute stuff with and for him because HE ABSOLUTELY MORE THAN DESERVES IT.
Ahem.. Sorry.
I think we’re both sweet tooth people? Just in different areas, I’m all for chocolate, while Murphy likes pies, like really really likes all pies. I try to make him pies occasionally since I know how happy it makes him and that tiny, slowly forming smile he gets.. I adore it and him.
We’re also huuge drama tv show watchers, I blame Murphy on this, we have to watch and keep up with at least one drama show. And then we discuss together what angered us/ made us happy about it really passionately.
We have to own at least one dog. At least medium sized friendly & chill dog. Just imagining Murphy relaxing with a dog ♥
Feather-like kisses are a huuge thing with Murphy. Rare like every other affection (cuddling!! holding hands!!) but I melt every time. Murphy secretly loves when I kiss his nose & forehead.
My aus? Claire I have too many and I don’t even remember all of them! Usually my fave aus are some game-based au’s like the au which sets in Thedas were me & Ushio adventure together.. as a giant horned dude & small point eared elf.
Then there’s the silly werewolf au.. and highschool au which ironically I have poked the most in the past but not nowadays..
I think my fave au is the Thedas one? From Dr.agon A.ge? I know I explained a lot of it to you already but I got and idea to different kind of au where me & him are in Kirkwall which is/was the shithole of Thedas, there’s so many bloodmages (they use blood to fuel their magic in which they hurt themselves & others and get the skills from demons, technique is actually banned in Thedas) and there’s the main templar “knight commander” who’s getting more paranoid each year (you spend like 10 years in Kirkwall in game) and has strict policy with the mages since they CAN and like I mentioned some WILL be dangerous but she takes it overboard. Then there’s the Qunaris who landed to the city to get their religious artifact back & a few years down the road they start mass murdering the whole city. Killed the viscount (kind of like authority figure, like town mayor). Scary people.
(Ushio has horns like them but he’s Vashoth one of those that has never lived under their religion and Qunaris aren’t a race technically anyway - not to those under the religion, those outside of it call the horned giants Qunaris) I’m getting too complicated.
I’m elf - Dalish elf (meaning I have never lived in a human city - those are called City Elves - instead I have lived in the forest while Ushio lives around Kirkwall - but not inside of it either.) I don’t know exactly how we would meet since I’m one of the most valuable members to our clan via being a mage but we meet & want to experience what’s it’s like to live in a city so we get into Kirkwall and it’s decent until the civil war with mages and templars start so we run away to hide from it.
Basically the au is us living in Kirkwall & seeing all the shit & falling in love lmao. Usually my aus are just “insert my fave 5ds pals into this group of people ayy & yaay” which I have done many versions of.. But I thought of that like yesterday & got inspired I love the second game so much
I have rambled so much & I still feel like I left out a lot & didn’t mention stuff bc I don’t remember them D: Thank you hun & thanks for waiting ♥ You can ask me to clarify stuff too ♥
Personal ranting/blowing off of steam below. Feel free to ignore. And let me preface this with the warning that my mom and I are freakishly close, linked and open with each other. I love her so much, and I moved thousands of miles to be here in Alaska with her. But we’re just both going through stuff right now.
So my mom and my vaguely-stepdad broke up on August 25. They’ve been pretty rocky since Christmas. And Spring Break. But then they went on amazing trip after school got out in May. My mom had job training for two weeks at the end of june and beginning of July. David and his daughter left on July 1st to do a huge trip of Washington DC-Florida-Ashville,NC-Florida (again) trip for a month. So they were apart for 5.5 weeks, which is the most they’ve been apart in two years. Even when my mom lived out in the village, she came into town every 3-4 weeks. Both of them were all “we’re never doing this again. i miss you so much” it was a little sappy and gross.
Mom felt pretty good for the first week. It was her decision, but they both agreed to the split. Then David called, and they met for a drink, at his request, “to mourn together” or some similar bullshit, that thursday. He then told her that he had basically decided during their spring break trip-in March- that he loved her, but ‘not as a forever-life partner.’ And since she’s his ‘first relationship in 18 years, he didn’t want to give her up.’ My mom was completely wrecked at that, understandably. Especially since she completely uprooted her life to be with him.
David and I have never really meshed well, but we got along a lot better than my mom and his daughter. She seemed to really dislike my mom, practically outright hating her. Then she sent an email to my mom saying how sorry she was about the breakup and that she really did enjoy having my mom in her life and sweet things like that. So my mom said that we were both there for her, if she ever needed anything. Or just wanted to go shopping or to the movies. Which is true. Mom was so surprised and moved by that email, it was another emotional upheaval.
Meanwhile, my grandmother’s had scans revealing spots on her lungs. They were either blot clots, or cancer. But, given the amount of blood thinners she’s been on, there shouldn’t be clots forming at all. She had a biopsy today. When my mom found that out, she went over to david’s house that night. I totally understand needing physical comfort during times of emotional turmoil.
What bugs me, is that my mom keeps going on dates with David. They’ve gone out to dinner, she’s stayed over at his. I’ve asked her about this, saying that she’s basically giving him everything he wants. Dinner dates and sex, but no commitment, which is what hurt her so much.
Apparently, she doesn’t see it as that type of relationship. She doesn’t actually stay the night, always comes home, and doesn’t have to deal with family issues.
But he’s telling her about how he’s applying for new writing jobs, and my mom helped him try to find a homecoming dress for his daughter. And she is taking her and and a friend shopping tomorrow for dresses. After going out to dinner with David tonight. At the fancy restaurant 35 miles away.
We’ve talked about all of this. Because we are freakishly open and apparently have no other friends up here.
I’m not really looking for advice. But I needed to spew my feelings. Because I am trying to understand her need to see him. Even if I think she deserves better.
But I finally told her (during one of our ‘be my friend not my daughter’ chats) that I’m not going to listen to whining about David. Which I know was mean, and not helpful. And I don’t know if she’s just not whining about it. Or not to me.
(we also had a moment where she was saying completely awful things about my grandmother’s health. Because yes, she’s obese, diabetes, and could have changed her lifestyle and didn’t, but it doesn’t mean that she deserves to be sick, dying or to have my mom saying those things about her. And my grandmother is my favorite person on the planet. so I ripped into her about that.)
So to sum up everything: Basically miserable, lonely, suffering allergies and pissed off at my mom. All for no good reason.
