听这一段的时候，可能是因为读了以前的轨迹卡作为铺垫，我忍不住泪流满面。我联想到《一棵开花的树》所描绘的，变成一棵树，长在你必经的路旁，阳光下慎重地开满了花，当你走近，会在你的身后洒落花瓣。那是对我们的相遇和生命的无常的注解。

生命纵然苦短，但他会告诉你，这一切都藏在这个世界里的fleeting moments里，也许在地球上没有什么是恒久不变的，但每个美好的瞬间都在替我说我爱你。

这可能是这个时代的乙游写出的最打动人心的文字之一。

我一直觉得乙游角色一旦通过故事立起来，现实和虚构的界限就会逐渐变得模糊，因为玩家的爱可以让这个人物在精神世界里长存，也许他是触摸不到的，但是每当你产生美好的感觉，并且想到他的反应的时候，他就在你的记忆里很鲜明地活着。

所以这一段也在回答，当我们无法触碰到他时，可以怎样安放和感受爱。

The part that moved me the most in 2026 Evan's birthday story was (unexpectedly) the voice story part, where Evan discusses what his funeral might be like.

Evan speaks about his funeral with an attitude of living toward death. What has always touched me most about him is his reflections on life, death, and desire. Undoubtedly, he is the kind of lover perfectly suited for a sentimental girl…

Evan: For the person I am now, death is neither good nor bad. Like life, it is simply one of the two equal sides of a coin. If it is tossed once every day, then I would like to watch the final result together with you. Your brows have relaxed. Does this mean you allow me to imagine it? Thank you. I have indeed imagined many kinds of funerals—different music, different settings. Accidental ones, natural ones, solemn and dignified ones, joyful and strange ones, or perhaps no funeral at all. I could become a patch of moss in the forest where we once hiked together. Or a shell on the beach we once visited. The music at that time would be the wind passing through the forest, or the sound of waves surging again and again. Or perhaps, the sound of your singing. If so-called reincarnation truly exists, then one day you will pass by me. Humming softly, picking me up from a pile of fallen leaves, or from a shallow shore about to dry up, and slowly walking home. Just like we are at this very moment.

When I read this passage, perhaps because I had read the earlier trajectory cards as emotional groundwork, I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. It reminded me of the fantasy in A Tree in Blossom (a Poem by Xi MuRong), becoming a tree growing along the road you must take, blooming carefully in the sunlight, and when you draw near, letting petals fall behind you.

Life may be brief and full of suffering, yet he tells you that everything is hidden within the fleeting moments of this world. Perhaps nothing on earth is eternal, but every beautiful instant is, in its own way, saying “I love you” on Evan's behalf.

This may be one of the most moving pieces of writing to come out of otome games in this era.

I’ve always felt that when a strong narrative truly brings an otome game character to life, the boundary between reality and fiction gradually becomes blurred. A player’s love allows this character to endure in the realm of the mind. Perhaps he cannot be touched, but whenever you experience something beautiful and imagine how he would respond, he lives vividly in your memory.

So this passage is also a response to how we might place and feel our love when he is beyond our reach.

I open twt and saw a LnN SEA post and i RAN to this blog.

Ngl, I was not that optimistic to have a Global / SEA LnN considering 5 years difference but damn If its true then I CANT WAITTT

my thoughts are that it's... pretty bad LOL. i've been seeing cn reactions to it and everyone thinks the quality is like picking random classmates who are learning english to do the lines.

i also think light and night is a game that is best kept with chinese dub, or asian languages, because it's very important to make the men have two names (chinese and english). but the existence of an english dub increases the chance of the localization using their english names only because english voice actors are going to have a hard time saying the chinese names.

however, Jesse is Xia Mingxing's stage name and he was bullied in france specifically because he's chinese. people called him a yellow-skinned freak there.

Lu Chen chose the name Evan when he studied abroad because his classmates couldn't pronounce the "Lu", and by choosing the name Evan he distanced himself from the clan he hates.

Sariel is Qi Sili's designer name. when people use Sariel in the game it immediately lets you know they know him as the famous designer and not the 3000 year old fox and war general.

Charlie and Zha Lisu are both unique names specifically chosen to cause the mass confusion in the first meeting where the heroine thinks his name is Charlie Su as in Mary Sue. there's even a text where Charlie complains that people think his last name is "Su" when it's "Zha".

hi, sorry for bothering u but i dont know any other light and night players yet (and i dont do twitter or discord anymore so idk if theres more people there). idk if this was mentioned elsewhere and i just missed it because ive been playing the story while doing other stuff, but is zha lisu the doctor in chapter 7 the hero in white that treated xiao yi? i feel like that wouldnt make sense but his description just feels really similar. also, sorta related, has it been mentioned what the canon ages of the characters are? idrc about age differences but im just struggling to put the timeline together in my head without the ages to reference.

haha, those pesky one character differences but also how vng uses pinyin doesn't help because xiao yu's name in chinese is 小宇 which is more like "Little Yu" and he doesn't actually have a surname. this is a common way to address kids in chinese. meanwhile, xiao yi's name is 萧逸 and so it's very easy to see the difference.

i did want to answer this though because we do have canon ages!

Hi, thank you so much for your analysis for L&N, especially for Evan my oshi!! It’s so amazing I’ve been obsessed with this game for years but sadly don’t know Chinese so I’m living off crumbs haha. I do have a question, do you think each MC/heroine has different personality types compatible to the Li? If so, how are their dynamics?

uh oh, i have vague deja vu of answering a similar question a long time ago but it's lost in my archives, haha. in my opinion, the heroine's personality does change a little depending on the man, but it's more like some traits are exaggerated and some are not. she doesn't turn into a different person entirely.

anyway, below the read more is a recent post i wrote about the heroine's personality in 2025.

OSBORN. Just your regular average girl at the beginning, one who gets embarrassed when the man she likes teases her too much and who has understandable hesitance towards the unknown and dangerous things. However, now she can handle her own against Osborn's teasing and loves provoking him until he pounces on her. Her first reaction to the unknown and dangerous is now excitement and curiosity, because she knows Osborn will always have her back and clean up any messes she makes. She's learned a bunch of skills from him (racing go-karts, close-quarters combat, shooting a gun, etc.) and can even confidently deal with members of the mafia. She's kept her promise to be able to walk side by side with Osborn in his world.

On a regular weekend, she likes lazing around the home with their furry children or she'll plan an outing with Osborn to explore new scenery, do an activity he likes, or ask him to do an activity she likes. It's rewarding to see Osborn slow down, relax, and be surrounded by soft and warm things.

EVAN. A girl that gives off the impression of being innocent, compassionate, and gentle like a rabbit. Those are all wrong impressions. She has the steel resolve to walk into hell with her lover to either pull him out or stay with him. Perhaps, at first, she was drawn to the bleeding and tortured soul of her lover, thinking she can soothe him, but now she accepts all his blood and darkness. She would die and even kill herself for him, and he would do the same for her. In public, they're a power couple handling projects that are millions of dollars and cordial to everyone, but in private they share a tenderness only the other person can see. Her whimsy is only for Evan.

On a regular weekend, there's lazy days spent in the kitchen researching new baking or coffee recipes, or there's outings because one or the other person saw an interesting experience to have together. They both want to know each other more and more, deeper and deeper, until there's no separation between their souls.

SARIEL. A starry-eyed junior designer trying to catch up to her North Star. However, now he's her North Star, her role model, her boyfriend, her muse, her brother, and her lover. She was a baby bird still learning to fly, but now that her wings have grown she chooses to fly around her fox. She's seen him in some of the worst moments of his life and loves and supports him unconditionally, including him going on killing sprees. Sariel Has Done Nothing Wrong In His Life Ever. He's so aloof though that she takes it as her personal mission to pull this celestial down to earth by being the biggest gremlin ever. The more wild the idea the more hilarious it is to see his reaction.

On a regular weekend, she takes care of their garden with him, asks him to teach her different traditional Chinese arts, and asks him to critique her draft designs. Or she pesters him until he gives in and goes out with her to an activity she planned for them to get him out in the world more.

CHARLIE. She found him off-putting with his intrusion into her life and blatant flamboyance. The secondhand embarrassment was real. However, now she strives to be even more flamboyant than the man of flamboyance himself. She likes to declare her love for him as openly and passionately as he declares his love for her, as if it's a loss if the whole world doesn't hear their love for each other. They are mirrors of each other so, despite all the differences in their hobbies and upbringing, they walk on the same road in life.

On a regular weekend, any tiny whim she has will be realized by Charlie. Want to see the snow? Trip to Antarctica right now. Want to go swimming? Go to one of his many properties that has a private pool. The world is their oyster.

JESSE. A big sister who took care of a crybaby little brother. But now the pup has grown into a wolf, who looks domesticated, but she has to be careful not to push the button that will make him pounce on her. The roles between them are so blurred now that sometimes they trip over each other to be each other's caretaker. They would immediately die for each other, but neither of them wants that. It's a complicated relationship because they understand each other like family, but it's precisely because they're family that there are stronger arguments to pull the other person back from certain actions since there's no need to soften their words. They've seen so many important moments of the other person's life and been there that there's no such thing as being one without the other.

On a regular weekend, they usually go out to find some interesting activities to do. Jesse puts 1000% energy into planning dates for her happiness. If a day is spent at home then it's playing games, helping Jesse rehearse lines, or having Jesse be a model for the clothes she's designing.

Death and the Maiden - Evan Character Study

Death and the Maiden is a trope about the personification of Death (usually a man involved with darkness, death, and evil) interacting with the personification of a Maiden (usually an innocent or virtuous woman).

Fascination with death has been present throughout human history, but I believe the motif of Death and the Maiden exploded around the late Middle Ages onwards, largely in part to the Black Death ravaging Europe and forcing people to grapple with the concept of death. Artists of various mediums began to explore a fascination with mortality, desire, death, and taboo en masse [Death and the Maiden in Art and Music: A Timeless Motif of Mortality and Desire, 2024].

This tension and dance between life and death, and the personifications of Life and Death, naturally leads to romantic portrayals, with the most classic Death and the Maiden motif being the story of Hades and Persephone. Death, this overwhelming and inevitable force, abducts the innocent and nubile Maiden to destroy her, claim her, corrupt her, or seduce her. Following the progression of human society and their issues at the time (in particular the repressiveness of the Victorian era), vampires (and in extent gothic horror and romance) became another avenue of exploration for death, sexuality, and taboo targeted towards women [Gentleman Death in Silk and Lace: Death and the Maiden in Vampire Literature and Film, 2024].

Now, how does this all connect back to Evan from Light and Night? It's very obvious that the Blood Clan is analogous to vampires, but it's their customs and view of the world that seals how Light and Night's writers based the Blood Clan on gothic horror vampires. They revel in decadence and view themselves as superior apex predators to humans [6* Enticing Feast]. So, we have the connection that the Blood Clan, ergo Evan, is the personification of Death.

Evan views rabbits as symbols of purity and innocence [6* Illusionary Light] and has associated the heroine with rabbits [6* Sinful Love], and so now we have the heroine being the personification of the Maiden.

Additionally, one distinctive feature you see in Death and the Maiden is Death carrying the Maiden back to his world. This is committing raptus, the abduction of a woman to marry her. Although its meaning has changed, you can see this action preserved in the ceremonial "carrying the bride over the threshold" in Western culture; thus, when you see Death (or a monster) bridal carrying his Maiden its supposed to make you realize this trope is at play. Evan is the only one of the Light and Night men who carries the heroine as his bride over a threshold [6* Meaningful Contract]. He also confines the heroine in his world for a period of time [Main Story Chapter 17].

Now comes the best part, after establishing Evan as Death and the heroine as the Maiden, which is playing around with all the possible endings of the Death and the Maiden trope [13. Death and the Maiden II, 2024] to explore the dynamics of this relationship.

THE CORRUPTION OF THE MAIDEN. Throughout their relationship, Evan has always encouraged the heroine to express all sides of herself, especially her darker sides, like interrogating him [6* Sinful Love], dominating him [6* Stuporous Plunder], or possessing him [Love Makes Us One Chat Feature].

He literally tried to make the heroine his weapon in the main story [Main Story Chapter 16] and it's because of him that the heroine made her first real kill [Main Story Season 2 Chapter 6].

The most egregious corruption examples are when he makes the heroine share a sin with him so that they're bound together [6* Song of Sin and Desire], or when he mentally breaks her into becoming his tool [6* Crown of Ambition].

THE DEATH OF ONE (OR BOTH) PARTIES. The heroine has killed him [6* Elegy of Yesterday] and Evan has killed the heroine [6* Crown of Ambition].

THE SALVATION OF DEATH. I changed the order of the bullet points up there because, as an otome game with an ultimate message of hope and establishing your personhood, this is the best ending that everyone is striving for. For Death to be saved, he must open himself up to the Maiden and be accepted in his entirety, which is quite a struggle for a monster, but you can see the heroine insist on knowing everything about him, including his grief and disgust at himself and his race [6* Meaningful Contract]. She gives him her forgiveness and, most importantly, her absolute trust not to abuse his power over her [6* Prairie Fire]. Finally, the heroine has managed to convince Evan not to massacre an entire race and kill himself for now [Main Story Season 2 Chapter 9]. Evan is even starting to imagine different futures for himself [6* Yesterday's Rules].

In conclusion, this is the explosive chemistry of Death and the Maiden with Evan and the heroine. It's how they're polar opposites in many aspects but they're drawn to each other like a moth to a flame and find release in each other, be it salvation or death [6* Deepened Past]:

E: I have a deep impression of the Roche limit because the astronomy teacher back then made an analogy with it.

I looked over questioningly and waited for his following explanation.

E: He compared the two celestial bodies in the Roche limit to those in love—or perhaps two people in any type of intimate relationship. E: And derived from this that, no matter how intimate the relationship, the best state is to maintain a fixed distance. E: Once you cross that specified point of distance, one party is destined to be like a moth throwing itself into the flames, moving towards destruction.

His voice had no fluctuations, but my gaze was stunned for several seconds. Reason told me that this analogy had a certain basis, but some emotion in my heart drove me to have an impulse to deny this statement. Before I had time to sort out this inexplicable thought, Evan continued to speak.

E: But at the time I couldn't understand this and had no way of agreeing with it. E: Celestial movements can be regarded as a rule in the law of nature, but a relationship between two people can be chosen. E: How can there be someone who would approach another person, uncaring of the danger of being smashed into pieces?

Dusk sunk down and the night and lights outlined the lonely world. The noise of wind and insects thinned and so the world appeared serene. Finally, amidst this question, Evan turned his head to look at me. It was also at this time that I realized our hands that held each other were actually trembling slightly. Who was trembling? Evan or me? Perhaps it was both. Just like how, between me and Evan, it was unknown who it was that was willing to approach the other party, even if their body was smashed to pieces. It might have been both of us. I suddenly realized the reason I subconsciously wanted to reassure him earlier but didn't know where to start—it was because what Evan needed wasn't reassurance or comfort. He needed the forgiveness and reconciliation from this even less. What we both needed was to die a violent death together. We needed to fall together. The rims of my eyes stung so much they burned and, before the tears fell, I did my best to spread my arms into the largest embrace and hug Evan. Evan also hugged me. There was still crushed grass and small gravel on our bodies and when we hugged it inevitably made us feel pain; however, we still hugged each other tightly, in this heartbeat and in this pain. When I spoke again, my voice was a little choked up.

[MC]: I remember you once said we were like Charon and Pluto, always facing each other. [MC]: But Evan… [MC]: I don't want to just stand in the same place, separated by a set distance from you and face you— [MC]: What I want is that, even if I become pieces at the end, I'll cross all the distance in the world to walk to your side. [MC]: Maybe I'll turn into shooting stars. In that case, you can make many, many wishes on me. [MC]: Or, if I'm luckier, I can become your planetary ring and protect you forever and ever. [MC]: In short, I will walk towards you, I will stand at your side.

So, you don't need to go beyond your own trajectory, you don't need to be scared of losing control, and there's even less of a need to keep yourself tense and apply one program patch after another on yourself. I will walk towards you. Or, it's also alright if we walk towards the other person together. We'll both be smashed to pieces and we'll both turn into fragments or shooting stars. It doesn't matter. What's important is that we're together. The night finally flooded in, like a downpour or a light gauze, and it hid everything in the world inside of it, seemingly able to let people temporarily avoid the quake of the years. In this moment, in the night sky, a shooting star seemed to streak by. The torn up celestial body plunged towards the ground, and we held each other.

E: Thank you, [MC].

The curtain of night descended and the noise of the school turned calm. Gradually, the breathing in my arms also became even. I quietly lowered my eyes to look at Evan's sound-asleep face and his relaxed expression made my heart soften. The street lights of the school suddenly lit up and the incandescent lights made him furrow his brows slightly. I unconsciously copied how he blocked the sunlight for me, but that furrow didn't smooth out. A breeze blew through and all the dusty chaotic bits and pieces in my heart were blown away. My eyes curved and I lowered my head to gently kiss Evan's lips—his brows relaxed.
