So recently, I embarked on a little project…

Knowing that not just could I watch the Loki series with subtitles in both Chinese (traditional) and Chinese (HK), and also that the differences in subtitling would produce different results, I decided to do just that - watch the series on two devices to see what the differences are, and how they might affect the interpretation of Loki and Sylvie’s relationship and their dynamic.

On Nov 19, 2021, I started not with Episode 2, but with Episode 3, when they formally meet each other in front of the golden elevators that lead to the Timekeepers’ Chambers.

I went line by line, assigning green text to Loki and yellow to Sylvie [for their original spoken lines and what those translated to for both subtitles], and for the near-literal English equivalents after translating it from Chinese, blue to him, and red to her. The darker blue and dark orange translation corresponds to the Chinese (HK) subtitles, and the turquoise and pink translation corresponds to the Chinese (traditional) subtitles.

I then had a little discussion with another fan in our shared discord group about this little exchange, and the insights gained were pretty interesting…

What are your thoughts on this?

@delphiniumblooms , do you have any further insight into how the slight difference in the Chinese subtitling and its consequent retranslation back into English might (or might not) change the way Loki and Sylvie’s relationship is interpreted?

"Mess of feelings" sounds accurate

Okay now, wait a minute. You realize, Marvel, you do realize that you gave us, in one episode:

-Loki having a deep, rational conversation about his feelings

-"a bit of both"

-Loki dancing

- Loki singing in Asgardian (the most beautiful song I've ever heard, the voice, the music, the sounds, no you won't convince me otherwise)

- "a bit of both"

-Loki smashing his glass just like Thor did

-"A BIT OF BOTH"

and, on top of it, another painful cliffhanger. But that we should be used to.
