Nifemi is a character who I tried to put layers into, while basing some aspects of her personality on myself. But while not only is it hard trying to breakdown yourself down into a character, my brain is also too messy to form proper lore before jumping straight into trauma parts, which I hyperfixtated on at some point. Seeing as this is my first time actually posting proper stuff about her and most of you might be like ‘Who the hell is even Nifemi?’, I’m gonna post a small background and info-dump on her lore a bit. (I also just need some type of outlet for all of this, it’s one am I want to sleep, she takes up my every waking thought)
Backstory and Personality Study
Nifemi hails from Earth 1960, and she was born in South Africa, though being raised in her spiderman city, Laghattan, New Lagos City, Nigeria (A mashup of Lagos and New York), where she lived and grew up.
She and her sister, Bolatito, were both orphaned at about 4 and 2 years old respectively, when their parents died in a plane crash, and moved in with their Uncle Benedict ‘Ben’ Parker and Aunt Mayowa ‘May’ Parker.
They owned a small family based resturant that brought in most of the family’s income and simultaneously ignited Nifemi’s love for cooking.
At 13 on a field trip to Oscorp Industries, she got lost from her class and got bitten by a radioactive spider and after her Uncle Ben’s death, took up the mantle of spiderwoman, or as she and her city call her, Anansi.
About a year of being Anasi later, Nifemi’s sister, Bolatito finds out about her identity and claims the role of ‘the gal in the chair, making gadgets, walkie talkies the whole thing.
When Nifemi was about 15, she met Miles 1960 (her Earth’s variant of Miles Morales) who she developed a strong friendship with as they bonded over their love for art and stuff. (Big sis, Little bro relationship)
Nifemi soon introduces Bolatito to Miles, the three of them becoming a trio with Miles and Bolatito becoming a couple at some point (Techflower)
Timeskip, blah, blah, blah, Nifemi meets Hobie at uni, develops a crush on him and him vice-versa and they both also end up together (I’ll explain the timeline more in depth later, I’m too lazy and tired to do that right now)
Anways,
Throughout her journey as Anansi, Nifemi’s canon events of losing her loved ones had a lasting impact on her personal self, both as Anansi and as her civilian self.
Nifemi and her Uncle Ben were extremely close, she growing to even see him as a sort of father figure as she barely had any memories of her real parents, which is why his death as her canon event, (though she didn’t know what canon events were at the time) had such a lasting impact on her, making her unknowingly more emotionally closed off than she would have been as a normal teenager. Her already naturally shy and introverted personality also didn’t help matters to an extent.
Due to this, even though she eventually opened up as she grew older and met HB 1960 (her earth’s variant of Hobie Brown), her second ‘loss of a loved one’ canon event of losing him (since he’s kind of her Gwen Stacy, love intrest thing), completely shattered her and set her down a dark slope of her being afraid getting close or forming any sort of relationship with people, as now 2 of her greatest love ones are dead because, in her mind, her.
As a person Nifemi is a laid back person to an extent, just moving with life but still trying to be successful. She tries to have an easy-going attitude with life but might appear to be closed off and moody to others at times. She honestly doesn’t try or mean to seem that way but has problems socializing or even opening up with people. Despite her attitude however, she does have a pretty steady friendgroup and realistic approach with life, keeping the few friends and loved ones she has close, which is why the loss of them usually has a bigger and lasting impact on her.
Nifemi sees her identity of being Anansi to be seperate yet at the same time the same with her civilain life, constantly mking connections yet still try to keep them from overlapping with each other. While, yes, she follows her Uncle Ben’s advice of “With great power comes great responsibility” and the added mindset of “If I don’t do it, who will?”, at the same time she still wonders if she should just stop trying. The fact that her city, still has their doubts about her, despite her constantly saving them, still seeing her as a demon, due to her powers and their superstitions, also doesn’t help matters and keeps the thoughts coming.
However despite all of this, Nifemi still keeps trying and persevering, using her friends and famiy as a sort of motivation to keep going, in a sense her motto kind of being, “Even if you don’t want to, do it for them”
In which the villains are teenaged heroes, and the heroes are adult villains.
(so far i only have the six done sooooo ye)
Eddie Brock & Venom
A 15-year-old aspiring journalist living with his neglectful father in a shady neighborhood in Queens, New York.
During a field trip to a local dubious science facility, Eddie accidentally bonds with an alien symbiote and gains the ability to stick to walls and shoot black webs, as well as enhanced strength and super agility.
The symbiote has the mindset of a child and often speaks in chirps or squeaks, as well as some limited vocabulary. Eddie develops a friendship with the symbiote and names it Venom.
Eddie and Venom get up to some mischief and anger a local crime boss by exposing his illegal work to the authorities. A hitman invades Eddie’s home and ends up killing his mom. Eddie and Venom team up to drive the invader out, but the damage is done.
After the loss of his mother, Eddie decides to take on the challenge of becoming a hero, forming a dysfunctional team of superheroes with his school friends.
Norman Osborn/Kid Goblin
The local 15-year-old mad scientist and pirated software dealer, as well as the son of the CEO of Oscorp, Harry Osborn.
Norman starts out as a mousy fellow, an overly curious sort who is practically attached at the hip to Eddie Brock. The two have been friends since kindergarten, and as far as Norman is concerned, he’s never leaving Eddie alone. Sort of like the overbearing but loveable nerd.
One fateful night, Norman attends a demonstration held by his father to test out a serum intended to give the user super-strength, emitted in gas form into a chamber. When the experiment appears to go wrong, Norman enters the chamber to help his father, inadvertently inhaling the serum.
The result is a chaotic new personality in the corner of Norman’s mind, calling itself “Goblin”. However, unlike Harry, who succumbed to the psychopathy of the Goblin, Norman is able to control it, since he got a smaller dose of the serum.
After the demonstration, Norman is markedly different, more prone to making reckless decisions and persisting prankster behavior. While he’s still nerdy, he’s more sneaky and fidgety. It seems like the Goblin and Norman are in control at the same time, mostly.
Norman eventually discovers his father’s villainous behavior as the Green Goblin and decides to join Eddie’s growing team to protect New York and hopefully find a cure for Harry.
Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus
A reclusive 16-year-old tech genius who recently emigrated from Germany to America to study, living with his elderly aunt in a nice little apartment.
Otto is somewhat of a perfectionist, always striving to have the top grades and the best work. Thus, he’s seen as a little stuck-up by his peers, and bullied because of it. He has mobility issues due to a past illness and uses crutches to walk.
Otto originally creates the octopus arms as a mobility aid, mostly to grab far away objects. While they are fused to his brain stem, he’s developed a much stronger chip to maintain his control over the arms. They are small and retractable, easily able to hide underneath his shirt and slip out from underneath.
Chronically shy, Otto rarely ever goes anywhere other than his home lab, the high school, and the library, but he ends up getting drawn into in the mystery of Harry Osborn and finds himself befriending Eddie and Norman (though he butts heads with the latter quite often). In the team, he’s primarily the “guy in the chair”, preferring to work behind the scenes, but he does upgrade his arms to be more suitable for combat, and can switch between the small arms and the big ones.
Because he’s still learning English (though he mostly has it down), he has an accent and sometimes bungles his words. In an effort to improve his accent, he recites poetry to himself, and secretly dreams of one day reciting a poem to Rosie, the girl next door he has a crush on.
Max Dillon/Electro
A snarky 16-year-old who lives with his busy parents in a humble part of town.
Max has a concerning obsession with electricity, and enjoys creating complicated electric currents using wires and baked potatoes. How ironic that he should gain electric powers after being caught in an accident while visiting his father at an Oscorp factory.
Conflicted over his new powers, Max becomes friends with Eddie and his group after discovering they have superpowers as well.
He had been on his way back from school and spotted the trio of teens fooling around on a rooftop, which he climbed up to investigate further.
Max agrees to join their group, but isn’t fond of Norman, whose father’s company is responsible for the severe injuries his father sustained in the accident. Eventually, Max and Norman become close friends and enjoy doing wild science experiments together, much to the dismay of the others.
Max, however, maintains a steady dislike of Harry Osborn, and is determined to bring his company’s malpractices to light.
Flint Marko/The Sandman
An 18-year-old former criminal who decided to change his ways after coming into contact with mutated sand that fuses into his body.
The oldest member of the team, Flint provides parental support to his younger friends. He tries to be a good example but often uses criminal methods to solve problems, which awes the others.
Norman is always asking Flint to teach him to pick locks, but Flint’s worried his Goblin side will use it to steal cheetos from the 7-11, so he only teaches Eddie, Otto, and Max his illegal knowhow. As a former criminal, he knows the minds of evildoers and provides good intel for the team, helping them bust drug rings and bank robbers.
Flint is estranged from his family, due to his past illegal activity. He had become reliant on drugs and had gotten in with gangs, which put his family’s lives in danger, leading them to kick him out. He deeply regrets his actions, and wants to use his new powers to do good, and maybe win back the trust of his family so he can return home and see his little 7-year-old sister.
Curt Connors/The Lizard
A 13-year-old who was illegally experimented on by Dr. Mary Jane Watson, who wanted to unlock the secrets of limb regeneration via fusing human and reptilian DNA. She had hoped to create the next step in human evolution and breed an army of super soldiers, but instead turned Curt into a strange lizard-like creature.
He escaped from MJ’s lab and took to the streets, living in alleyways and dumpsters until he was found by Otto and brought to his home. Otto wins Curt’s trust by giving him a Snickers bar, as a sign of their newfound buddy status.
Curt has become more animal-like and feral after his experimentation, prone to eating bugs and chewing on clothes. He’s also a bit timid, not easily trusting of others (unless offered a snack he likes). Over time, he finds his courage and becomes a brave teammate and friend to the others.
Everyone on the team loves him, as he’s seen as the baby of the group.
so, yeah! if you bothered to read this far, thank you very much!! hopefully i’ll find the energy to finish writing about this au’s villains :P
do you ever think about how bruno probably would get nervous before going into the town? how he would shy away from the townspeople's gaze, bc he knew they were just waiting for him to predict something bad. eyeing him like a ticking time bomb.
do you ever think about how maybe one day he gets too overwhelmed and just pulls on the hood of his ruana to block out the eyes? and maybe to make himself feel safer, he pretends he's someone else.
"i'm hernando and i'm scared of nothing." he whispers as he puts on his hood and walks out the door with his sisters.
although technically it would be called “dia de los niños”
anyways, here are some halloween-themed headcanons for encanto!
(pls note this was written by a half-mexican kid so im bound to get something wrong lol)
-- While it’s called Dia de Los Niños in the Encanto, it’s really an event that people of all ages can enjoy. It’s more of a “festival of tricks and treats” kinda deal. While only kids can go door-to-door to ask for treats, everyone can particpate in the costume contest (the winner gets a modest sum of pesos and candy).
-- Another tradition is the spooky play the Madrigal kids put on every year. Usually, it’ll be an old traditional story, but sometimes it’ll be the plot of a scary movie, murder mystery film, or play Bruno saw in a vision. Dracula, Beetlejuice, Psycho, Macbeth, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, etc.
Julieta makes snacks for the audience to enjoy, Pepa uses her weather powers to set the mood (nothing like well-timed thunder to punctuate a scary scene), and the grandkids play the characters.
Mirabel shines in narrator roles, and prides herself on her dramatic narration skills. Camilo tends to go for the hero roles but will eagerly choose villain as well. Antonio is a tree :D (but he’s also played the hero too). When Camilo plays hero, Isabela does the villain with style. She definitely uses her plant powers to make herself more “witch-like”. Dolores loves playing dramatic characters and always hams it up (Dolores: *extravagantly faints* “Oh! The horror!”). Luisa tends to be the one behind the curtain, but she does sometimes come out to do the occasional role. Luisa tends to forget her lines, so she writes them on her hand. Often Bruno will assist her with stage work! The rats are great at untying rope knots.
-- This day is Camilo’s day. He loves nothing more than shapeshifting into ghoulish disguises and pranking people. He won’t scare small kids though; he knows the line. Sometimes he’ll have one of his siblings/cousins/tios/tias help with the prank.
One time, he had Bruno help with a prank against a wandering group of villagers in an attempt to get him to “loosen up”. “You gotta own your creepiness, tio! Let loose!” And Bruno went so hog-wild that he even frightened Camilo a tiny bit. Turns out Bruno can be scary when he wants to be.
-- Abuela likes to tell scary stories by the campfire. Stories from her childhood that she remembers fondly, despite how dark they are. They’re usually late at night so most of the kids are asleep, but the teens love wandering over to Abuela’s little corner and eating leftover goodies while listening to her tales.
@daydreamingdragon Ah, I think maybe you have the wrong idea about the pet system since it hasn’t been clearly elaborated on yet! By uniquely drawn, I simply mean that each pet species that comes out will not be on a base for the most part (so less like FR for example, and more like pokemon?) I don’t mean that each different looking pet will be a unique custom on site. For example if we have a Turnip pet that’s released, any number of people can have an identical Turnip pet as long as they can obtain it through site features.
At the moment I have a writer working on all DV writing, in the future we’ll most likely hire more writers and/or have user contests for writing as well as art.
This will all be outlined when the time comes after all testing is complete, but I will be requiring a resume, portfolio, and most likely I’ll ask any promising applicants to do some paid tests to make sure their style can look consistent with the site’s style. There will be artist positions for all types of art including item, pet, and avatar art.
At the moment I’m working together with my back end coder, writer, vector artist, and a few friends who help with managing the dev blog. Thank you so much!
Only the premium currency will be account bound, the majority of items as well as in game currency will be tradeable!
I think our rule will be you can cross-site trade as long as the other site you’re trading to/from also allows it.
I’ll try that, thank you!
@tratane Our backend coder is coding in Laravel with gulp! Thank you!
I wasn’t aware of this, thanks for letting me know! Don’t worry, I’ll be discussing compatibility and latency in depth with the coder I hire to make sure DV is as compatible as possible to all browsers.
Thank you! Yes you will need another email to make another account. The alternate accounts option is mostly just for completionists, the site can be experienced fully with just one account, and it can be argued that the permanent choices you make for your character make the experience more rewarding.
Dappervolk will be a site available to any country, so you should be able to play it!
I’ll be taking applications for alpha when the time comes, as well as occasionally doing alpha slot giveaways when we reach follower milestones (1k is coming up!) For alpha I’ll be looking through and choosing those who would benefit site testing and provide informative feedback as well as be able to play an adequate amount.
For beta, there will be much more space for many players to join, I’ll most likely do a mailing list of some sort when the time comes and email everyone when sign up is open and allow them to volunteer.
There will be approximately 6 NPCs per town, and 4 starter towns for launch. I’ve finished the npcs for the first two towns and have designed the majority of the npcs for the last two. :) I’ll be posting tidbits about them in the form of NPC chat posts, so look out for that!
Forums are the main form of interaction, along with private messages and profile/pet profile comments. There are some plans for other more real time forms of interaction but that will be a future project for after the site is completed and launched.
The Galactic class will be distinguished by their class specific antenna. At sign up you’ll get up to 3 to choose from. The options are not yet set in stone for each class, but generally you’ll get your pick between 3 newbie outfits, 3 skins, different eye colours, and different hair colours/styles. Like the galactic class’ antennas, the animal class will also have class specific animal ears and tails. Humans and elves don’t have any extra class specific features like that at this point.
There should be! If not as ears/tail at sign up then it would be obtainable on site.
