Lonnie was always a pleasure to work with, always positive, always entertaining, always a gentleman! Lonnie Brooks (born Lee Baker Jr., December 18, 1933 – April 1, 2017) was an American blues singer and guitarist. The musicologist Robert Palmer, writing in Rolling Stone, stated, "His music is witty, soulful and ferociously energetic, brimming with novel harmonic turnarounds, committed vocals and simply astonishing guitar work." Jon Pareles, a music critic for the New York Times, wrote, "He sings in a rowdy baritone, sliding and rasping in songs that celebrate lust, fulfilled and unfulfilled; his guitar solos are pointed and unhurried, with a tone that slices cleanly across the beat. Wearing a cowboy hat, he looks like the embodiment of a good-time bluesman." Howard Reich, a music critic for the Chicago Tribune, wrote, "...the music that thundered from Brooks' instrument and voice...shook the room. June 12th, 2020 Lonnie Brooks Day in Chicago but worldwide in mind! Extremely talented man that never got his real due. I tried my best to help him get there cause I knew he deserved what he was striving for more so than people who were less talented that made it off the backs of people like my father. He went through a lot just as a black man born in the south in the 1930's. Then as a black musician who wrote and made rock n roll hits in the 50's as Guitar Junior. But of course the people in charge of his career took it all and I mean all of it. Didn't stop him though cause he loved music. He hit the reset button, started all over, changed his name, and still his talents catapulted him into a blues icon. Still never received his due. In my heart and soul I know God gave him his due when he gave him his wings. No more sharecropping, no more fear, no more people taking advantage, no more racism, no more power trips, no more pain, only love! Here on earth he is still in peoples heart, soul, and mind. I know cause I get messages galore how much they love, miss him, or changed their lives like meeting their future spouse at his shows, or businesses using his album title as the company names. My brother, my family, and I will always make sure of letting people know who he is because his talents will do the rest!
