If you remember some time earlier (it is still "earlier" for me) I found my old post with a Kindness soul design concept and thought that they could be the Underswap human.
Well, here they actually are, with the sprite a little reworked (design barely changed). I am working on the other sprites on the way too but they're all even more work in progress than this so I can't show them now.
Back to the human. Their working name is Jam (which I literally just thought of). I might actually keep it because it sounds funny. Although in tags I will still refer to them as "kindness" because this will be too many names to keep the track of.
They are supposed to be French-themed (baguette, croissant, eating frogs legs, that kind of stereotypical stuff)
They do have a beret as an armor item but it is not on them because all weapons/armors are in the overworld and not with humans.
I just googled the image as a "french stereotype example". I have no idea where exactly this is coming from but I did put it as an example.
Obviously they're a child so some stuff are excluded from the list but the vibes are still somewhere around it.
I hardly ever see people in fanfiction reference any of Pearl's belongings when they visit her mansion, it's usually always made up stuff when she has confirmed possessions such as the lemon orchard, a giant vegetable garden thats so big it needs to be watered by a helicopter, a go-kart (and probably a track along with it) a private jet (along with an airstrip as confirmed by elevator dialogue in side order, there's one in her backyard APPARENTLY) and like a billion shoes.
But everyone always references Marina's motorcycle, because everyone including me is in collective agreement that Marina riding a motorcycle is badass as hell 😂
Something said in a conversation earlier today got me thinking... I have to imagine there's been an intimate moment for my FFXIV couple at some point where they just... indulge their curiosity about each other's body. And I don't mean as a matter of gender but rather race; they've both been in other relationships before, but both with members of their race.
Like, as an Eorzean Hyur you probably know auri people exist, and even if you've maybe not seen a lot or them because they're not really native to Eorzea you've probably interacted with travelers and refugees, so the idea of Au Ra as a race is not exactly weird. But at the same time... you never really touched one. Like, you don't just walk up to people (even those that you know well) and go "hey can I touch your skin?"
And auri skin is quite peculiar. Some scales on the body look very soft, like on the cheeks, neck or calves, while others appear a little more chitinous, like on the hips or forearm, but still not exactly rigid. What do they feel like to the touch? Do they bend? Are they warm or cold? Unless you happen to lie in bed with an auri lover you just keep your questions (and your hands) to yourself.
At the same time I'd imagine an Au Ra would be curious to touch Hyuran ears, of all things. Like, we give ears for granted but I'd imagine they'd be bewildering to a race that listens through their hollow horns. Ears have such a weird shape and structure, and they're unlike anything else on the body. They look rigid and wrinkly but they bend a lot, and they're really sensitive for some reason? They're surprisingly warm, they get red when you blush, and you can poke a finger right inside them? Seems very dangerous and inconvenient.
Not to mention body hair. This isn't really stated anywhere in canon to my knowledge, but I tend to imagine Au Ra don't really have body hair beside their head and eyebrows, as scales seem to manifest in a somehow similar pattern. I can easily picture an Au Ra closely examine a Hyuran arm, taking note of the body hair that's a little too thin or too sparse to be called fur or in some cases to be noticed at all from afar.
I don't know, when I think about it it seems like a cute bonding moment from the intimacy of a mixed race that I hadn't really considered before.
okay so this is probably a Veilguard complaint that almost no one else shares, and I might have missed some banter or conversation options relating to this ....
but it drives me up the wall that an elven Rook, implied to be Dalish, calls the Evanuris 'gods' instead of 'Creators'.
Now, the word Creator does appear in the game, particularly out of the mouth of Elgar'nan — and it becomes a more powerful moment through that.
However, I would have loved to see a bit more nuance around this kind of linguistic shift?
Like, Bellara starting out talking about the Creators, but then shifting her wording due to Andrastians in the room. Or shifting the wording because 'gods' feels more accurate — but that quite clearly isn't the case; the game makes it quite clear these are not gods.
But then again — to the Andrastians, their god is called the Maker. 'Gods' as a term is used mainly for the Tevinter Old Gods. And knowing the tension and history between the Dalish and Tevinter, it feels odd that the folks of the Veilguard would use the term 'gods' that liberally. Yes, in light of the revelations we get it makes sense to us players — but the timelines don't add up.
Why is this then happening? Well most likely because of VO budget. If any time your protag mentions the big bad you have to have extra lines for elven Rooks, that adds up.
And yes, I can come up with a bunch of characterization reasons too; like wanting Rook, Davrin and Bellara to distance themselves from their past beliefs, or wanting to make everyone else in the Veilguard feel included. Or maybe the Dalish stopped calling them Creators for some other reason.
But... for someone a bit too deep in the lore, it feels like an oversight.
While Iskra doesn't have any family left back in where she grew up, she still keeps in touch with a childhood friend (a miqote girl) from a neighboring farm. While Iskra doesn't like going back there she sends care packages and stuff to her. After the Ala Mhigo mission, Iskra learns her friend married an up and coming officer in the XIIth legion. (Iskra initially signed on with the XIIth before being transferred to the XIVth)
Unfortunately, the marriage starts to go down hill and Iskra learns some troubling things about their relationship. So Iskra makes an unofficial trip back to the place she never wanted to step foot in again to put the fear of God into this so-called husband of her friend.
Long story short (and i don't want to get too far into content warning territory), things escalate, the husband "disappears" and she packs up her friend and sends her to Eorzea where she's within reach but not likely to be retaliated against by any Garleans that might have an axe to grind.
Friend settles in Limsa and not long after gives birth to a half Garlean daughter. Said daughter ends up eventually working in Costa del Sol at a certain new fad café where she eventually befriends a certain rough talking girl who happens to like the color orange a lot. (Yes, this ends up being the girl Kab lost her virginity to the night before she left Costa to go to Ul'dah and start her hunt for the monk that killed her grandfather)
this may have all been inspired by listening to "Goodbye Earl" by The Chicks >.>
Vidarr talking to "himself".
This piece is inspired by some historic artifacts i was reading about the life of an italian executioner that was active late 1700-mid 1800.
The article wrote how basically he would have to travel all through the Apennines to hang heads of the criminals he executioned, to scare off potential bandits to attack mid-little towns in the mountains. Fun bonus fact he worked for the pope!
Anyway yeah, Vidarr would do something similar for Blackoak. He would be sent to the surrounding mountains to do the same job. During those days when he was off in the cold snowy summits, he'd get very lonely (and a bit insane perhaps). He hates monthly heads hanging
Gem au Purple Sapphire, Pink Topaz, and Crimon Pearl Rambling
(ie) Karl, Techno, and Tommy
a squad!
Karl and Techno are war trauma 🤝
Karl and Techno Relationship Info
Karl out ranks Techno in gem society, but they see each other as equals, and treat each other as such.
Techno is older than Karl.
Techno is physically stronger and a far superior warrior (tbf not many gems rival his combat skills in general) than Karl, and Karl was originally not a gem intended to actually engage in combat themself, simply to help predict the enemy and advise generals. But Shit Happens.
Karl has a history of being both extremely unlucky and lucky. Kept getting poofed in battle but still retrieved or surviving a full shattering, and being very good at anticipating the enemy with future vision. Karl got important enough to be assigned Techno as a guard while in a war-zone.
Techno was also sort of asked to teach Karl proper combat skills. He wasn't assigned this task, but it was more of a subtle personal ask from PD and also Techno got tired of having to save Karl constantly in situations he totally could have protected himself.
They were inseparable for the heaviest parts of the war. Karl would need to go into war-zones to physically communicate with generals about what to do next, and where most gems would hesitate to follow, Techno charged ahead unbothered and confident in their combined skills.
As the pairs need to be in active combat subsided over the thousands of years, they continued to remain together. Although they spent more time apart, Karl said he felt 'safest' with Techno around. As Karl is still a very high stationed Gem he's still got a target on his back. So Techno being assigned to his side as his personal guard seemed natural.
Tommy added into the mix <3
With Techno doing less combat work, he needed an assistant. someone to manage the new tech that he had no clue how to use. (Techno's smart, well read still. But while in war for like a thousand years Homeworlds tech got crazy advanced and he doesn't know wtf he's doing with the touch screens. Karl had more involvement with tech and also had an easier time learning it as he had prior knowledge before becoming active in the war. And future vision helps.) So Techno was assigned a pearl. He's been given this option long ago, but considered a pearl a distraction, an accessory, and something he'd have to worry about protecting all the time outside himself as they were not built for any kind of combat. Techno's view on some gems "not being built for combat" has changed since Karl, as Karl wasn't made with the intent to fight but he was a very skilled and dangerous fighter anyway.
Techno arrives at The Shell and is Greeted by Tommy, and is bored with the options given for making a fancy custom pearl and how long it's going to take for a new pearl. Eventually he bluntly asks why Tommy is here, and why cant Techno just take him, as he's close enough in color and clearly knows how the tech works that baffles Techno.
The Shell tries to downplay and disregard Tommy, saying that he's nothing compared to what Techno could have. And Techno Directly asks Tommy,
"What's this disembodied voice got against you? You look fine. You act fine. You know how the tech works."
"I'm Defective..."
"Okay but like. how. you look fine to me?"
"I can't sing- and i drop and fumble things and i trip a lot-"
"Okay but like do you fall or just trip? and I don't need you to sing, I need you to use the damn digital communicator. Do you drop things a lot?"
"I don't fall anymore- i don't drop-"
"I don't see a problem."
Techno bickers with The Shell, about how Tommy isnt doing anything anyway, as the Shell told Techno. and That Tommy would be of use to Techno, and isnt that all The Shell cares about?
Techno finally threatens getting PD involved if it doesn't let him take
"The perfectly good pearl you've got standing here doing nothing, rather than wait ages for a pearl who is also going to have to learn how to do things"
