thank u so much for asking. i have been DYING to talk about them.
warning for LONNNGGG text below ⬇️
Lore (pronounced lore-ay) is my Stormlight OC; she comes from Iriali nobility and her family is connected to the Iri practice of Tidewatching. She took an interest not in the actual waves, but in the creatures beneath them from a young age—which expanded quickly to all kinds of fauna study. This was mostly discouraged by her family, as she was betrothed to a wealthy Thaylen-Iriali merchant and her interests were encouraged to be more “scribe-like” as opposed to scientific. Lore never really felt anything beyond friendship for her fiancée, Glynd, and even that faded as they got older and he became more shrewd and self centered. Impartiality turned into resentment the closer their wedding came, and at 19, Lore packed her things and booked it out of her Rapunzel-style window to catch a ship across the Reshi sea and explore the world.
Hoshi (hoe-shee) is @stormlight-archive’s OC. She grew up in a band of outcast mercenaries, her half-Listener father being their leader. Being part Listener herself, Hoshi and her siblings bear distinctly non-human features that keep them away from greater society as a whole. Despite her tough, no-weakness upbringing, Hoshi had a strikingly individual and optimistic spirit that attracted the attention of a Reacher named Parch, and being a Willshaper came to Hoshi just as naturally as breathing did. Sometime in her adolescence, Hoshi took off on her own and made a name for herself performing mercenary work single-handedly. Her bright red hair and sharp features, along with mysterious powers, earned her the common name of “The Red Star”, as if she had fallen from the blood-colored constellation of Taln’s Scar.
The two meet when Lore is seeking a bodyguard-for-hire in Tu Bayla and has been following the trail of mentions of The Red Star, intrigued by the mystery of the figure. Hoshi, in turn, catches wind of a wealthy-looking Iriali girl asking about her, and figures it’s easy money for essentially a babysitting job. They finally encounter one another face to face and both are pleasantly surprised by the person they meet—Hoshi, expecting a pompous, spoiled, wanna-be scholar, and Lore expecting.. a man. They make a deal to travel together, Lore providing a provisional paycheck in spheres she laundered from her wedding fund as well as a Chull and a caravan, and Hoshi keeping her journey safe in exchange.
Hoshi wears a great deal of bulky clothing and is intentionally cagey about her appearance and background, not really wanting to face possible consequences of Lore being frightened by her heritage. This, however, does not stop Hoshi from flirting with Lore relentlessly. Lore, unfamiliar with any customs outside of Iri, assumes Hoshi is making fun of her, and harbors a constant annoyance towards her prodding. This eases with time as the two travel and grow closer, with Lore eventually learning about Hoshi’s Willshaper abilities, her Spren, and eventually her Listener heritage. Hoshi’s outward confidence becomes a soft vulnerability as Lore discovers more about her, and instead of being disgusted or perturbed, seems endlessly fascinated. By the time they come around to realizing their feelings for eachother, they’re already fiercely codependent, sleeping in the same cot, and can barely stand to be apart for more than a few hours.
There’s a lot more their story than this, with the two becoming separated after Hoshi is targeted by Skybreakers, and reuniting in Urithiru with Lore awakening as a Truthwatcher, but this is the gist of how they ended up together. There are also lots of unmentioned other characters (namely Lore’s closest family, her cousin Noone, belonging to @/comiclysmic, and Melo, Hoshi and Lore’s Reshi traveling companion and basically their shared best friend and confidant, belonging to @/smeegamae), and waaaay more, but this is the Loshi essentials.
Thank you for reading if you’ve made it this far! Please please please feel free to shoot me any more questions, even silly ones, because I love to talk about them. Also feel free to direct Hoshi questions to Lukas’s inbox, since he’s far more qualified to talk about her than I am.
