I wanna talk about 1963 lotf film because it’s my favorite adaptation and I LOVEEEEE James’ Ralph and Tom’s Jack!!

Okay so first James was amazing and idk if this makes sense but whenever I think of Ralph I immediately think of James because in my mind that’s LITERALLY Ralph (same for Tom) like he just brings this certain charm that known of other actors have brought (besides Winston’s Ralph) but I’m kinda said there wasn’t much creativity. It kinda felt like a big summary for the book or like a play. But I’ve actually read some people’s opinion and I’ve heard he’s too nice/sympathetic. Now I guess I can see where this is coming from because in the book Ralph is more meaner and a little sassy, but also I’m not gonna pretend Ralph was some evil bully that was shoving Piggy in lockers every minute 💔 and even then Ralph does show empathy for piggy when he begins to rely on him! I just think James’ Ralph leaned into that a little too early. I think that we are forgetting Ralph meant well and wanted to maintain order. Which I personally think James did a great job on that part! But of course he missed some of that early judgment that Ralph had in the book.

So honestly if you asked me if I liked James’ Ralph or Winston’s Ralph more I’D BE REALLY TORN😢(Balthazar’s Ralph is NOT in this conversation) because I love James’ Ralph because the charm he brings and how he shows Ralph’s sympathy but I also really like Winston’s Ralph because of his sassy attitude and optimism. If I had to pick between the two I’d genuinely have an aneurism💔

Now if you told me to pick between Tom’s Jack of Lox’s Jack 👀👀👀 I’m picking Tom 100% like his Jack was just amazing. Don’t get me wrong, Lox did a great job and I enjoyed how he played Jack! But Tom gave me that sociopathic attitude that Jack has in the book. He was genuinely scary and brought fear into the others. He showed no empathy and guilt. He just looked power hungry and I really loved that about his Jack! He’s attitude towards characters like Simon or Ralph was SO PERFECT ALMOST!! Like genuinely he’s the only Jack adaptation I like 😭

anyways I love James Aubrey and Tom Chapin!! They brought so much charm to their movie!!

i like the idea of simon pointing out little flowers and going "wow pretty" and piggy being the NERD(lovingly) he is he yaps about what flower it is and stuff about it

they're also both outcasts with physical disabilities so i feel like they'd bond over their loneliness and develop a friendship over it

this might be ooc but i find simon talking to piggy and saying "jack isn't that bad i swear" and piggy not buying it for shit very funny

the idea of them caring for the littluns is also very nice too

I actually fucking hate it when people characterise roger as like the rudest and meanest fucker on earth because of his depiction in the BBC adaption

Rant below

The BBC adaption portrayed him HORRIBLY.. Roger in the book was a quiet, observer type of person who rarely spoke. He was seemingly thoughtful too. He was along the lines of being a sociopath definitely, but the fact he's a sociopath does not mean he's always got to be aggressive and straight up horrible

If anyone remembers in "the shell and the glasses", there's these quotes,

1 - "Roger, sitting on the very edge of the cliff, looked sombrely back at the island as he worked his fingers at a loose tooth. His gaze settled upon the top of a distant mountain"

And after Robert told Roger that Wilfred was gonna be beat

2 - "Roger received this news as an illumination. He ceased to work at his tooth and sat still, assimilating the possibilities of irresponsible authority."

Quote 1 implies Roger is well aware of the damage that the boys caused on the island. He knows and isn't oblivious to what he does. Quote 2 shows he's thoughtful and actually is acknowledging Jack's type of leadership though I can't say much about his opinion on it because it then cuts to a different scene. He's considering the concept of his leadership which probably motivated him to become the torturer because he's not familiar with the thought of being able to hurt things without scolding or whatever ANYWAYS

Then we have the scene where it goes like "roger's hand was conditioned by a something forgot the word who knew nothing of him and was in ruins" yeah you know the scene. What I'm gonna say with this is that he is absolutely not the type to look for fights and stuff like I've seen tiktok fans depict him like, he was taught to surpress his real self because of his personality disorder[?]. If we imagine his life before the island, any person who goes in to depth about his character should know that he would be quiet not very engaging instead of always looking for violence.

He was taught to not be violent and so we assume he went with that teaching. His violent side only started showing because of the lack of punishment or society to scold his actions, he felt freer on the island and managed to be his true self

So with this all stated, I'll say I've disproved Roger's characterisation of the BBC adaption. Roger in the adaption has caused many people to view him as a deranged hazard that needs to be avoided because he will hurt you at any chance given!!!))&

Maybe if therapy was of better quality and much more available in the 50s it would have been different for him rest in peace roger💔

Also I don't know if I should say Roger is a sociopath or has ASPD I gotta research on that

Talking about platonic Jalph!!

The human is, as many animals are, a social creature. Since the beginning of humanity we have worked in groups to ensure survival. Even to the most introverted people establishing connections with other people is primordial, and to a child that is in a stage when is developing a sense of identity on its own having it’s fundamental for the normative development of said child's psyche.

Both Ralph and Jack are at their age in a stage classified as early teenagehood. A stage where kids start to gain a sense of identity and start drifting from their families and prioritizing their relationships with their equals.

The first time they meet Ralph takes a very judgmental approach towards Jack, calling him ugly. This is interesting cause it’s common for individuals to attribute bad qualities to people we consider unattractive and not want to associate with them, however since the beginning Ralph seems interested in Jack, most likely because he sees how Jack has power over the choir and, in the context, he has similar power, it’s only natural that people with similar status to want to associate with one another and that’s how their relationship starts, as two kids that have power above the rest.

This dynamic however seems to change when they climb the mountain together they already start forming a friendship, as kids of the age are more likely to consider better friends those who they do most activities with, and it seems that what i’m guessing are the first few weeks it could be theorized the time they aren’t tending to their duties they spend a fair amount of it together. Using the example of the scene where before Jack hunts the first pig, when coming back to the tribe, goes to talk to Ralph, check how the shelter building is going. This scene follows the two having a conversation, and while it is normal for the two kids that have taken the role of leaders to discuss the problems they are having regarding issues that affect them all, Is curious how the very first thing Jack does is go talk to Ralph.

Ralph's admiration towards Jack is no secret if you’ve read the book, but is it reciprocated? Does Jack hold him to at least a similar standard? The most common reason why two kids get into a conflict is because of issues of power in a group, feeling like he has the right to more power was what mainly led Jack to drifting from Ralph's tribe.

But just desiring a higher status than Ralph is not motivation enough for wanting him dead, and you could argue that at this point Jack was probably reaching some level of disconnection from reality, and while that could be true, there’s something else that could be a determining factor on the pure hatred he develops towards Ralph.

“Favour piggy like you always do”

There are studies show that the feeling of being left out can lead to conduct of aggression, and feeling rejected by a close friend is something that for a twelve year old that doesn’t know about emotional regulation is devastating, “like you always do” implies that in Jacks eyes to Ralph Piggy is a bigger priority, that he is going to prefer Piggy, someone he deems as inferior, over him.

We don’t get enough time of these two alone to really determine how deep the platonic connection this they had, but for what we can see they at least seemed to garner an admiration towards each other, and it’s a shame they never get to actually talk their issues without one of them being almost hunted..

Golding has absolutely no idea about how a child's mind actually works, so this falls flat as he probably wrote the scenes of those two without considering the psychological implications. I’m no expert on the topic either and it's been a while since the last time I read the book but child social development is one topic that fascinates me and all my claims are backed with sources that I can provide if anyone wants me to.

I'm sorry if this is messy and probably doesn't make much sense but I we all agree someone needs to bring the topic to the table.

Lotf rant post cuz I need to get this off my chest✋

Being in this fandom makes me wonder if anyone here actually read the book. You ppl try so hard to excuse the actions of the two psychopaths in this story yet hate piggy because he's "annoying." When Jack throws a fit over being leader it's considered "charming" and "funny" but when Piggy does it it's bad? Hating and trashing on piggy just proves the books point. People would rather route for the winners of society and turn their backs on the losers.

Piggy was not annoying, he was ignored constantly, ridiculed for his weight and other attributes, hurt physically on multiple occasions for no reason, and more. Piggy was "annoying" because he HAD to be! If he didn't constantly speak up and interrupt then no one would have heard him. HIS ideas where the right way to go, HIS ideas brought them safety, yet HE'S the one ppl ignored and hated on. Piggy is an amazing character, and I need anyone you doesn't think so to sit their fatphobic ass down and read the book again pls.

I ADORE Jack's character, but pls stop defending this fictional killer boy like he's your son PLS.

I thought it made the most sense to start with everyone's favorite blonde boy RALPH this might end up just rambling but I'll be mostly talking about present island Ralph.

First off I try to stay close to how they describe them in the books, so that's the reason for Ralph's long blonde hair. I decided to make it sort of put together but still messy because he lives on an island but he tried to keep as clean as possible. I liked the idea of the messed up and cut shirt but I didn't like how tattered they were in the 60s movie so I made it torn but not to the point of barely functioning. I also landed of cuffed pants because I needed Ralph to look different from characters like Jack and Piggy with their shorts. I didn't put much thought into the face except for the chipped tooth (which you can't see but is there) and how his expression is most of the time, which is a mild shock / worry at all times. Mostly because he's scared of Jack hunting him. He also has green eyes despite what the post-island may look like. I also wanted Ralph to be tan because I knew I was going to have two paler people (Jack and Piggy) and so with the tan skin tone I wanted to give him lighter clothes. Then I gave him the dark jeans just to add something darker. I also made his uniform to match Piggy's which I based off actual uniforms and the same badge as the chior gowns and hats.

Those are all of the reasons that I can think of off the top of my head and thank you for the ask I really like interacting with the LotF community :)

Should i read lotf :3 i dont think my school is gonna make us read it are the plot and characters interesting or is it where you have to like the premise to enjoy it

Yes! You should absolutely read LOTF. From my prospective, Lord of the flies is such a eye opening and well written story. Plus it contrasts from the typical "boys stuck on the island and they all live in harmony and get rescued just fine!!" With the added fact that there's so much foreshadowing and underlying meanings that you don't notice until you reread it. I 100% recommend reading it!

For the plot and characters are actually interesting, it really depends on how you see them and take from it (if that makes sense 😓) from my views, I wasn't all that hooked and interested until chapter 2, probably because I was too busy drawing and only paying attention to certain words and phrases. (I was listening to the auto book version in my school) but that's besides the point, the characters and plot are actually super interesting! The contrast between characters and how they act towards each other is just, wow. For example, Ralph and Roger, they are two complete opposites and see them being stuck on an island differently, which makes and creates tension between them as the story continues. Same goes for Jack and Ralph. Again, the plot is really different and a set back from other island-related books with the added fact this was set at the dawn of WWII.

For the question of do you have to like the premise of it to enjoy the book, it really depends on each person. Everybody has their own way of getting into and enjoying a book. I don't know how you read and what it takes to enjoy a book for you, but from personal experiences with this book, it didn't take much for me to adore this book. Reason why is the tense and unique story and plot, and the complex characters it comes with.

This is probably the last post I’ll make on the topic but I want to address it as formally as I can, to the creator themselves.

Hello Riley.

In short: You have fucked up. That is a very blunt way of saying it, but you are NOT taking this seriously and you are ABSOLUTELY handling the situation with immaturity and lightheartedness that is inappropriate. You admit to being a part of the fandom before, so you know yourself how small it is and how vulnerable the fandom is to people attacking us for our interests. What you are doing is being fuelled by something in your life and I hope that you figure that out. Either that or your sense of humour is so far beyond funny that you have to tear people down to bring yourself up.

I don’t want to sit here and list everything I think is wrong with you because I don’t personally know you and I think that is unfair. Just as you don’t know me. Saying that you ACKNOWLEDGE that the creators are upset then calling it “goofy” is honestly damaging to myself and probably others. How would you feel if you spent time on something, something that you ENJOY and someone else comes along just to make fun of it and mock you? A lot of these people use lotf as an outlet, a safe place. And you insulting them because you think it’s “funny” shows that even as an 18+ year old, you have the mindset of someone who is far younger. You know that what you’re doing is hurting people and yet, you continue to do so. I hope this is something that you can get over and eventually move on from and look back on and LEARN. Because mocking someone because of their interests isn’t quirky. Mocking someone because they have something they enjoy won’t get you likes. You’re only going to receive hate from the fandom and eventually that hate will spread like a wildfire.

People in this fandom are tight knit and we are small, but we are family and I refuse to stand by and watch you tear people down for what? A couple likes on a tiktok post that in a couple years won’t matter at all? Your “silly” and “goofy” tiktok are taking a toll on people’s mental health and I hope you realise that. It isn’t funny anymore when you become the reason people are hurting. It wasn’t ever funny in the first place.

I know you probably didn’t read all of this because you probably don’t care. You’re probably going to keep posting immature tiktoks and continue to make fun of people because it’s the only thing that keeps you warm at night. But Riley, I sincerely hope that you realise the damage you’ve done and the harm you’ve caused because at this point people are beginning to feel self conscious and dejected because you created a toxic atmosphere. People work for HOURS and they are talented and they are some of the best people I can say I’ve ever met and watching them crumble because of you is a shitty, shitty thing.

I hope you truly are proud of yourself for ripping people apart.
