Proposal Gone Wrong: Louis
A/n: Another request filled! Happy reading!
He can't believe this; he can't freaking believe it. He lost the ring. He starts throwing everything in his sock drawer out, hoping that maybe it just fell to the bottom of the drawer. That maybe he didn't actually lose it. He gets to the bottom of the drawer and finds it empty. Groaning in frustration, he slams the drawer shut.
"Fuck," he whispers, running his hand through his hair.
"Everything okay, Lou?" you ask, walking in.
He jumps, "what? Nothing...I mean I'm fine, everything's fine."
You raise an eyebrow up at him, "are you sure? You look a little freaked out."
"Yep, I'm great. Never better."
You shrug, "okay. I'm going to shower before we head to dinner, is that okay?"
"Yeah, the reservation is not until 6."
You nod and head to the bathroom to shower. When the bathroom door closes, Louis quickly pulls out his phone. Hitting Harry's name, he waits for it to ring.
"Hello?"
"I lost the ring."
"What?" "I lost the ring!"
"What do you mean you lost the ring? How do you lose the ring?" Harry asks.
"I mean I'm taking Y/n to dinner where I'm supposed to propose and I don't have the engagement ring. I'm freaking out, Harry! I can't believe I lost it! What the hell am I supposed to do?"
"Just calm down, mate. Think about the last place you saw it and go from there."
"Okay, I put it in my sock drawer."
"And you're sure that you put it in there?"
"Yes, I'm sure. Where else would I have put it?" Louis says.
"I don't know, maybe you put it in your jacket pocket or something," Harry says.
"No, I picked it up from the jeweler, came home and then I went to the bathroom to wash my hands, and then I..."
"Shit!"
"What? What's wrong?"
"It's in the bathroom!"
"Okay, what's wrong with that?"
"Y/n is in the bathroom."
"Oh, that is bad."
"What do I do?" Louis asks.
"Go in and grab it, maybe she hasn't seen it yet."
Louis takes a deep breath, "alright, I'm going. I'll call you later."
"Alright. Good luck, mate. I'm happy for you," Harry says.
"Thanks, Haz."
Louis hands up the phone and slowly opens the bathroom door. His hope is that he can get in and out without you noticing him. Unfortunately, that's not how things work out. He had just grabbed the little velvet box and opened it to check on the ring, when you decide to pull back the shower curtain. Not expecting someone else to be in the bathroom with you, you scream bloody murder, scaring Louis and causing him to drop the ring in the toilet.
"Louis! You scared the hell out of me! What are you doing?" you ask, placing a hand over your heart.
Louis stares down at the toilet for a second.
"No, no, no. This cannot seriously be happening."
"Louis? Louis, what's going on? What's wrong?"
"Nothing, love. Just...just stay right here. I'll be right back."
Louis goes to grab a flashlight, leaving you in the bathroom alone and confused as to what's going on. He's still downstairs looking for the flashlight when he hears it, the tell-tale sign of the toilet flushing. He takes off upstairs.
"No! Babe, don't flush the toil..."
He stops in front of the bathroom as you walk out.
"What are you yelling about?" you ask.
"Did you flush the toilet?" he asks.
"What?"
"Did you flush?"
You give Louis a strange look, "of course I flushed the toilet. You flush after you use it, silly."
Louis hits his knees, before covering his face with his hands.
"Louis, what's wrong?" you ask, bending down next to him.
"You flushed the ring."
His voice is muffled, so you don't hear him the first time.
"I did what?"
He sighs before lifting his head up to look at you.
"You flushed the ring." "What are you talking about?"
He sighs again, "tonight at dinner, I was going to propose but I thought I lost the ring. I left it in the bathroom but when you scared me, I dropped it in the toilet. Then..." You gasp before putting your hand to your mouth, "then I flushed the toilet."
He nods before it hits you. Louis was going to propose. Louis was going to ask you to marry him.
“Wait, you said you were going to propose. You were going to ask me to marry you?”
“Yes, but now without the ring everything is ruined and I…”
You cut Louis off by pressing your lips to his.
“Louis, I don’t need a ring for you to propose. Would a ring be nice? Yes, but that’s not what proposals are about. They’re about us making the decision to spend the rest of our lives together.”
“So, you still want to marry me even though I don’t have a fancy ring to give you?” Louis asks.
You laugh, “your delivery could use a little work, but yes. Yes, Louis I want to marry you.”
Louis smiles so big you’re sure his face is going to crack; he gets up and pulls you up with him before pulling into a hug and spinning you around.
“We’re getting married!” he yells.
You laugh and Louis sets you down before frowning.
“What’s wrong now?” you ask.
“Nothing, just…hold on a minute. I’ll be right back,” he says.
He disappears for a minute before coming back with a black sharpie in hand.
“What are you going to do with that?” you ask.
“Just…”
He holds up a hand before taking a deep breath and dropping down to one knee in front of you. He uncaps the sharpie and smiles up at you.
“Love, I know this is probably not the way you pictured getting proposed to and I promise you that I will go and buy another ring as soon as I get the chance and do this properly. But for now, just know that I have spent everyday of my life waiting for someone like you to come along. Someone who I would love unconditionally and someone who would love me just as much. You have been by my side through everything and I have never once questioned your love for me. I love you more than I could ever put into words and I only hope that you feel the same way. So, with that being said…would you do me to honor of becoming my wife?”
Tears of joy are streaming down your face as you nod your head yes. Louis grabs your hand and draws a circle around your finger with the sharpie for getting up and pulling you into a kiss.
You laugh before looking down at your hand.
“I promise I’ll get you a real ring,” he says.
You shake your head, “It’s perfect, Louis. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
The two of you head to dinner and call everyone you know to tell them the good news. Louis never buys you another engagement ring because you opted to get a tattoo of his first initial instead and when the two of you get married, Louis gets a tattoo on his finger of your first initial to match. Things didn’t go the exact way Louis had planned, but you guys had a great story to tell your future kids and it was prefect for the two of you.
