Park Dates

Benedict and Sophie arrived together, hands held so close together that their shoulders brushed with every step. Calliope strained at her leash, desperate to greet Newton, while Apollo walked calmly at Sophie’s side like he’d been professionally trained.

Kate straightened. “There they are! And my favourite new baker.”

Sophie grinned. “I didn’t bring anything this time, I swear.”

Anthony looked mock-disappointed. “Tragic. Bad show Baek… though I guess eating and walking these beasts is hard work.”

They settled on a bench overlooking the park path, dogs arranged around them like a mismatched pack. Sophie pulled a familiar tin from her bag anyway.

“Dog treats,” she said, already opening it. “Before anyone complains.”

Benedict laughed. “They know your baking schedule better than I do.”

“That’s because you’re usually painting when I bake,” she replied lightly.

It was an easy thing to say. A normal thing. And still, Benedict felt it settle warmly in his chest.

The dogs sat, yes, even Calli, miraculously and Sophie handed out treats like a practiced ritual. Kate watched, amused.

“You know,” Kate said, “after that lemon loaf you brought to dinner last weekend, Eloise asked if you were available for private commissions.”

Sophie snorted. “Tell her my rates are outrageous.”

Anthony nodded approvingly. “As they should be.”

There was a pause, not awkward, just… quiet. The kind that happens when everyone’s comfortable enough to exist without filling the space.

Benedict shifted, then reached for Sophie’s hand. Not dramatic. Just natural. Like it had always been his.

She glanced down, smiled, and squeezed back.

Kate noticed. Of course she did. She always noticed. But she didn’t say anything, just exchanged a look with Anthony that said I am going to win that bet.

“So,” Kate said eventually, standing. “We’re doing a loop around the path. Are you two joining or staying put?”

Benedict looked at Sophie. “Dealer’s choice.”

Sophie tilted her head, considering. “Stay. For a minute.”

Kate nodded, unfazed. “Don’t let Calli eat a pigeon….or pull you into the serpentine again.”

“No promises,” Benedict called.

Kate and Anthony walked off, Newton prancing proudly ahead of them.

Sophie leaned back against the bench, exhaling softly. “They’re easy,” she said. “Your family. Intense, but… kind.”

“They like you,” Benedict said. “Which, given them, is no small feat.”

She smiled sideways at him. “I like them too. Even Anthony.”

“Ouch.”

She laughed, nudging his knee with hers. “You’re still a little weird about us being… official, aren’t you?”

Benedict considered lying. Decided not to.

“Not weird,” he said. “Careful. I like this. I don’t want to rush it. Like I said I’m not good at this but I want it to work.”

Sophie’s expression softened. “Me too.”

Their dogs collapsed at their feet, muddy, happy, full. Calli’s head ended up on Sophie’s shoe without hesitation.

Benedict watched the scene: Sophie, the dogs, the distant figures of Kate and Anthony arguing affectionately in the background.

“This,” he said quietly, “feels like something I want to keep.”

Sophie leaned into his shoulder. “Good,” she said. “Because I’m not going anywhere.”

And Benedict believed her.

TRCC Readathon Day 1 - Jan 15

I started listening to the audiobook for Love Unleashed by Aussie Author Melanie Saward while driving to work this morning, and according to Spotify I am already 10% through.

I'm also starting this challenge at page 38 of Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson.

This book is so beautiful and heartfelt. It’s full of so many big feelings and I found myself laughing, crying and smiling my way through it.

Brynn is such a relatable main character even with so few similarities to me. All her fears and insecurities, her big hopes and dreams, the way she loves so freely yet is terrified of it at the same time. Her journey over the course of this book made me feel so many things and I felt so connected to her.

I loved the people she met in New York, and the way each of them had their own big lives and stories. They all felt so real. I wanna meet all these people too! I adored Corey, Sienna, Michael and Robert. They were just so utterly lovely. I felt like I knew them personally.

This book may seem like a love letter to New York, but it is just as much a love letter to Country, to heritage and history and Ancestors. The connection Brynn had to Country and the land she walked on and the land she came from was a real, palpable thing throughout this book and I loved that inclusion so, so much.

I highly recommend this book.

7. Love Unleashed (Jen Lilley/Christopher Russell)

Not a realistic storyline, but who wouldn’t want to plan puppy parties?? Super sweet and heartwarming.

8.In The Key Of Love (Laura Osnes/Scott Michael Foster)

This was such a beautiful movie! Words failed me. Get Hallmark Movies Now and watch it ASAP!

9.True Love Blooms (Sara Rue/Jordan Bridges)

This was just plain cute. Loved both leads.

10. Flip That Romance (Tyler Hynes/Julie Gonzalo) Super funny and wonderful with a different storyline. That ending kiss!! 😍😍Highly recommend. (Post limit wouldn’t let me add a photo)
