There is a constant debate in the Stranger Things fandom about power-scaling, specifically whether Eleven is inherently stronger than Henry (001/Vecna) because she has defeated him multiple times—including when she banished him to the Abbys as a child.But if you look closely at the lore, Eleven actually got her powers as a result of the experiments connected to Henry. They are essentially cut from the same cloth. In terms of raw, baseline potential, Eleven and Henry are equally matched. The real narrative difference isn’t how much power they have, but where that power comes from and what it is used for.
The evolution of Eleven's power source in Season 2, we saw Eleven close the Gate by channeling her trauma, anger, and bad memories (thanks to Kali’s training). By Season 4, the show explicitly subverts this. When El tries to fight 002 she is win but later Henry using her rage, she fails. Henry (001) easily overpowers her.
Eleven only gains the upper hand when she unlocks a hidden memory: the memory of her mother, Terry, telling her "I love you." (Love vs. Hate ) This is the core thesis of the entire show. Henry’s (001) powers are fueled by pure, unadulterated rage. Eleven’s power, however, reaches its absolute peak through love and connection. We see this exact dynamic repeated in the Season 4 finale—Eleven is losing to Vecna until Mike gives his speech, reaffirming his love for her. That emotional breakthrough is what gives her the strength to break free and fight back.
Just like the classic protector dynamic, Eleven is always fighting with a purpose: to protect her friends and her family. Vecna is fighting purely to destroy, to consume. When you fight to protect someone else, it taps into a reserve of strength that selfish malice simply cannot access. Eleven doesn't win because she has a higher "stat." She wins because love is a fundamentally more powerful and resilient force than hatred. Henry and El are equals in strength, but El's heart is what makes her undefeated.
