Why is mischaracterization even a word in fandom spaces?

And I‘m talking about the marauders fandom especially. I think we all collectively agreed that jkr is a cunt and her canon is a suggestion.

People have no problem with creating personalities of characters who were only mentioned by name (e.p. Evan Rosier) but as soon as someone characterises their favourite characters only a little different to canon it‘s suddenly mischaracterization.

Let’s look at Remus. I see so many people hating on Atyd because of 'mischaracterization'. MsKingBean89 wrote the story about their youth. Do you actually know who Remus was when he was younger, before he lost everything? No. We don‘t. So you hate on Atyd because it doesn’t fit YOUR characterization of him.

People can have different and even multiple characterizations of fictional characters without any of them being wrong since all of this is fiction.

Fiction is not real. People can do whatever they want with fictional characters and none of it is wrong.

Because who decides what’s right or wrong? Canon?

I don’t think so.

Straying from canon is one of the core purposes of fanfiction. Just because Byler isn‘t canon doesn‘t mean that it‘s wrong to write about it.

And it‘s the same with characterizations. Just because it doesn‘t fit canon doesn‘t mean that it‘s wrong.

If you don’t like a fic because the characters don‘t fit YOUR characterization just don‘t read it.

It‘s not your place to tell what’s right or wrong because everything is possible in fiction.

Backstory; when I watched the movie with my Dad a month ago, I immediately thought "Wow, this character would be so interesting from the pov of an psychologist!".

Now bet what I wrote...

Exactly, an psychological, slow burn story which is mostly about his psychological layering... what do I say... I love psychology, it's so interesting 🤭
