Rating: Loved it

Chinese bls have this allure to them, even when shady or toxic. I have not read the novel, but I do understand there’s a lot missing in the series from the novel.

Time skips don’t always translate well into visual media, and honestly it didn’t always convey the passage of time in the series well either.

I hope we get a second season to expand on the secondary couple and the murder mystery Lu Guang Ming’s brother. Also, to show Chu San and Liu Yi’s new relationship.

I think there could have been more political commentary, but I know that’s just me and my preference and this isn’t entirely that type of story. It’s a mafia x college student/normal guy romance with a side of good cop x shady cop.

I did find it funny when the camera focused on Liu Yi’s ass. You understand Chu San and immediately understand he likes Liu Yi. Just physically at first, then he learns what type of person Liu Yi is. He is kind to those he considers family, which is his gang and Chu San and his adoptive father. He is immature at first, given the fact he is somewhat coddled by Qing Long.

When Qing Long and his sister die, it changes everything for Liu Yi. He lost the two most important people in the world. He gets his shit together and really steps up as a leader. Yet he is still oblivious to others feelings for him, like Chu San. Or perhaps he wasn’t and was just thinking of others first. Like when he asked Qing Long to marry Liu Yi’s sister because he was putting her feelings first. Even if it was romantically loveless, it didn’t stop love.

Liu Yi is mindful of Chu San’s father’s feelings for Chu San to live a “normal” life by marrying a woman. He is also not trying to drag Chu San into any gang stuff, not only because he’s a civilian but because of Chu San’s mother’s last wish for him to not get involved with gangs. That’s why he holds off and defects and denies Chu San’s feelings towards him. He knows the more they get involved, the more danger Chu San is in. Even so, he can’t cut him out of his life forever.

I think this a great story from China. One of the more rarer ones that doesn’t have to SA the cp and just never comment on it. It does more.
