Truly a remarkable before and after, we have so much love for this elephant. 🐘⠀ ⠀ The first image is available in the RL Shop, and the second is Luggard today, courtesy of the @sheldricktrust.⠀ —⠀ When we rescued Luggard three years ago, we wondered if he would ever walk again. Today, he has a spring back in his step and is improving by leaps and bounds!⠀ ⠀ RESCUE: While on a routine aerial patrol, our pilot spotted a calf with an obviously broken leg. By the time our SWT/KWS Sky Vets team reached him, the little calf had fallen far behind his herd and it was clear that he would die without intensive care, so we initiated a full-on rescue. X-rays revealed that he had been shot in the femur and foot, shattering his bones and rendering him immobile. We called this little bull Luggard, after the area where he was rescued.⠀ ⠀ RECOVERY: All who met Luggard marveled at his unrelenting determination and positive spirit, even in the face of such pain. Despite his compromised condition, he thrived being in the company of the other orphans. His friends rallied around him, treating him with lots of care and consideration. Slowly but surely, Luggard began to improve and walk more steadily.⠀ ⠀ TODAY: While Luggard may always walk with a limp, he’s improved immensely over the past three years. He is beloved by all at the Nursery and likes to be in the thick of things, despite his injuries. He’s also found his niche with new rescues, staying by their side out in the forest and making sure they feel at home. As if we didn’t already know how altruistic Luggard is, we recently witnessed him sharing his provisions with newcomer Nabulu — which, particularly among the food-obsessed Nursery herd, is a telling sight indeed!
