me: It came on me!

Jo: *looks shocked and scared for life with most priceless look*

Blake: Not the first time she said that.

me: It's really not..

Candy, Becca, Sami: *dies of laughter* *Blake and I start laughing*

Lunchtalks: Digesting Research - Marina Kazakova

This will be the first installment of ‘Disgesting Research’ – a series of lunchtalks where doctoral students present their artistic research in progress.

During the first lunchtalk, Marina Kazakova will present her research. In her PhD, she examines how the basic characteristics of lyric poetry can be expressed in film: (1). form, (2). musical qualities, (3). figurative language, (4). non-narrative, vertical investigation of the situation, and (5). the first-person point of view/ a self-reflexive speaker.

This research places particular emphasis on the most specific and direct use of lyric poetry within film: ‘a lyric film-poem’.

The genre of a film dictates how the film will be presented, the cast involved, and the overall storyline. When creating a film-poem, the essential micro features that Marina focuses on are: editing, mise-en-scene/setting, sound, cinematography, character, acting plot and narrative structure. Therefore, the struggle is to analyse how the 5 unique characteristic of poetry that I’ve selected are expressed in film medium.

At PhD Lunch, we are going to watch three freshly made short film-poems of Marina that demonstrate three different approaches to the creation of a film-poem:

1. Film-poem “Hot Snow I am”: a collaboration with the theatre maker Isadora Pei (physical theatre).

Isadora Pei acted out and co-dircted the film-poem “Hot Snow I am”. What she does in her theatre making is exploring the relationship between body and visual images. Inspired by some works of The Living Theatre, influenced by Odin Teatret and Tanztheater (the physical theater), Isadora Pei does tell a story – but not in the way you would expect – she tells of experience, reminds us of sensations or feelings and plays with our own memories. It can be baffling, transporting and profoundly touching, sometimes without us even really knowing why. Same as Pina bausch, she is not interested in how people move but in what moves them. Hence, it all influenced how the poetry of Marina was visualised through the body language of Isadora Pei.

2. Film-poem “The Noon at Schuman”: a collaboration with a documentary filmmaker Diren Agbaba. Diren was a cameraman and a co-director of ‘The Noon at Schuman”, in which he tried to show the film’s story that presents the truth. Diren’s input that made a difference to Marina’s filmmaking was his preoccupation with persuading the audiences through logic for rational and a well-prepared storyboard for eliciting emotional responses.

3. Film-poem ‘The Ropewalker: Above the Babylon of Europe”: the approach of a poet-filmmaker Marina Kazakova, who is primarily a literary person, rather than a cinematographic one. Influenced by Eric Rohmer’s talking cinema and his self-perception of an “eternal amateur” and Aleksander Sokurov’s dreamlike painting-cinema, her film-poems exist less to tell stories – although there is usually the thread of some plot or situation – than to expand a moment in time, a sense of place or an emotion.

Lunch Talk

It was not every day that the invitation to lunch was extended to..well in short anyone. Lily, had tried to keep her returned presences a secret as best as she could. She did not want many people knowing and driving her crazy, adding more stress for Harry, or causing Rita Skeeter to gain any more fame on the coat tails of people who actually did things during the War, since it was already going to be a wonderful bit of trouble when the nosy reporter found her out.

She had chose a small place in Hogsmeade for the lunch, since it was just a hop,skip and jump from her place of work. She worked at Hogwarts as a Healer and had come here after. Severus still had a few classes and it was the time he met with his seventh years. There was no form of trepidation in the woman who was sat near a widow to give her a view of people passing by which was also important to the witch. Having her back to a wall was old habit.

This was informal because Lily wanted a chance to meet with Draco away from the glitz and glamour of his mother's life. She actually knew Narcissa she had been kind to her during her recovery from the kidnapping and pain she had suffered at the hands of Fenrir Greyback. Draco and Harry, it wasn't really odd to her. Gryffindor and Slytherin. Like mother like son she supposed.  

Standing she greeted the pale, light haired boy with a warm smile. Since it had to be difficult to meet the parents or in her case parent. "It is good to see you. How are you Draco" she said softly offering him a warm smile she had heard a lot of him "I know that Harry said you would like to meet with me, I am sorry it could not have been sooner, but due to unforeseen actions and incidents, I could not find a time until now. Please join me, the mince meat pies here are quiet delicious."

The looongest tennis match in history!

At 6.13 on Tuesday 22nd June 2010, two players walked out onto Court 18 in Wimbledon ready to play their first-round singles match; the American John Isner and the Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. At that time, the players didn’t know they were about to start the longest match in tennis history, measured both in time and number of games. After 11 hours and 5 minutes of play over THREE days, Isner defeated Mahut with the final score 6-4,3-6,6-7,7-6, 70-68 for a total of 183 games. The final set lasted 8 hours and 11 minutes and was longer than the previous longest match in history. You might wonder how the players maintained their energy? Roddick, an American former professional tennis player, is said to have delivered three boxes of pizza and mashed potatoes to Isner in the paused match. Maybe that was the help needed for winning the longest tennis match ever?

Elvis “Blondie” Presley

Elvis Presley is one of the world’s most celebrated musician of all time. He is one of those stars that has impersonators to honor him and of course making money out of doing it. To be more precise, there are 50,000 people in the world today that actually make a living as Elvis impersonators. For these people, it is given to wear a black wig or dye the hair black together with the impressive outfits. 

But did you and your lunch mates know that Elvis didn’t naturally have black hair? Shockingly enough, he was born as a blondie but started to dye his hair black back in high school to achieve an edgier look. Who knew Elvis’s signature slick and shiny black hairstyle was actually a dye job?
