My sister, randomly: HEY. NEW UNIVERSE FOR CHENGLE IN THESE EXTRA AUS YOU'RE PLANNING. Have him open a portal and fall into Qing Jing during the Shen Qingqiu's widow arc ;)
Me: *deep inhale* you're a monster, now I'm going to have to develop this to scratch that itch
Bingge losing his mind over Shen Yuan using his (modern) clothes is what I needed for so long and didn’t realized until it was presented to me in a silver platter
I didn’t know what I wanted to draw first from the latest chapter of more than anything there were so many things happening and sadly I don’t have that much time because of my classes but I WILL draw that it-was-supposed-to-be-a-kiss part because Shen Yuan is so stupid
@deikshen thank you so much for all your work I wish you luck with your surgery and your recovery
Sneak peek of something I’m working on…
@deikshen I can't get them out of my head help
alright so. if you have ever had a discussion with me you know I’m OBSESSED with the scum villain’s self saving system — and as an extension of that, the fic more than anything by @deikshen is SO GOOD. so, since the image of chengle in a little tiger onesie won’t leave my mind, I wrote 1.8k words of Halloween at an unspecified point in the timeline
Shen Yuan really needed to start keeping better track of the days. He’d woken up that morning feeling better than usual — good enough to go out. And considering that Chengle was sprouting like a weed and most of his clothes were already more than a cun too short, what better outing than to the shopping center? Perhaps they’d even have something that would fit Luo Binghe properly.
It was slow going, but they made it in perhaps an incense time, the motley crew trooping across the sidewalks. They had barely caught sight of the doors, however, before Shen Yuan was greeted by a veritable explosion of orange and black.
Chengle tugged on his sleeve. “Baba Yuan, what’s that?”
Gears clicked into place in Shen Yuan’s brain. “They’re celebrating a holiday called Halloween. It came from a place far away, but people like it. It’s where you get to dress up and celebrate scary things.”
Chengle’s mouth gaped open in a wide O like a little fish. “Dress up? As what?”
Shen Yuan sank his fingers into the fluffy curls. “Anything you want to, baby.”
A wrinkle furrowed Luo Binghe’s brow. “I don’t understand. Why would humans want to do this?”
Shen Yuan shrugged. “Because it’s fun? I never really got the chance to do it properly, myself, so I can’t really speak to it.”
When the reached the center’s glass double doors, Luo Binghe opened them for Chengle with a silly bow. “After you, young master.”
Chengle snickered and flounced through, followed by Shen Yuan, who offered a headpat. “Thank you, Binghe.”
The interior was utterly transformed. Instead of the usual clean, white lines, fake cobwebs and spiders hung from the ceiling, with paper ghosts and monsters plastered along the walls. Chengle squealed, running to the brightly coloured flyers and scanning them eagerly. “Baba Yuan, Baba Yuan, look! This says there’s a party at the park tonight! And there’s snacks, and a costume contest! Can we go? Can we?”
Shen Yuan chuckled at the enthusiasm. “Sure. Do you want to dress up? There’s a temporary costume store here, I think.”
“Yes please! Can I be a tiger?”
“Why don’t we all be a big tiger family?” he offered.
“Hm.” Chengle considered this for a moment before his face lit up brightly> “I know! I’ll be an orange tiger, and you can be a white tiger, and Father Emperor can be a lion!”
Shen Yuan turned to Luo Binghe. “Well? They are the ‘kings of the jungle’, after all.”
Luo Binghe’s lips curled upwards ever so slightly. “Whatever Chengle wants.”
“Well, you heard him. I think that sounds like an excellent plan. Let’s get you your normal clothes first, but then we can go costume shopping, okay?”
“Okay!” The sheer joy in the child’s voice warmed Shen Yuan to the core, and he linked their hands. Likely afraid of being left out, Luo Binghe wove his callused fingers through Shen Yuan’s free hand.
“Shall we?”
Chengle dragged them through the normal stores in record time, barely even allowing Shen Yuan to see him try his new clothes on before they were at the checkout. Finally Luo Binghe was burdened with three shopping bags dangling from one hand, full of new sweaters and winter clothes, and they stood outside the pop-up store.
“Now, this isn’t just a store for kids, so there’ll probably be some kinda scary stuff, alright?” he asked, and Chengle nodded.
“I’ve seen lots of scary stuff!”
Shen Yuan chuckled deep in his throat. “That’s right. You’re the very bravest. Well,. I’ll be relying on you to protect me and your Father Emperor, then.”
Chengle’s chest swelled with his new duty and he strode through the sliding doors – right under an elaborate animatronic dragon. His back stiffened, but barely noticeably, and once he saw the full robot he relaxed again. Shen Yuan felt pride brimming in his heart like warm soup, and he turned to his other companion. “Come on, Binghe.”
They found the kids section easily enough, and Chengle was taken aback by the rows and rows of onesies. “There’s so many…” he breathed.
“Do you want one of these for your tiger costume?” Shen Yuan asked. Chengle nodded furiously, his little face scrunching up until Shen Yuan couldn’t do anything but pinch his cheek. “Let’s see if we can find you one, then.”
Luckily, the tigers were still in stock. Unluckily, they were at the very top of the row, out of Shen Yuan’s reach. “Binghe? Do you think you could reach up and grab one of those?”
Luo Binghe’s lips curved up into a small, gracious smile. “Of course. But perhaps Chengle would like to get it down himself?”
Shen Yuan’s befuddlement must have shown clear on his face, for Luo Binghe laughed low and throaty before crouching down on the floor, his long curly hair nearly brushing the ground. “Would you like to climb on this Emperor’s shoulders?”
Chengle didn’t answer, but instead scrambled up to a secure perch, his little hands fisted tightly in his father’s clothes. Luo Binghe rose very steadily and slowly, not even wobbling, until he stood at his full height again. Shen Yuan craned his neck upwards to see – what was Luo Binghe, six and a half meters? This was unfair! – as Chengle straightened his back too, releasing his tight grip to seize one of the plastic packs. Luo Binghe descended gracefully once more, his arms straining against the longsleeved cotton shirt that definitely was not built to contain a Heavenly Demon. Chengle scampered off as soon as he could, presenting the bag to Shen Yuan with a wide grin. “Baba Yuan, look! I’m going to be a tiger!”
Shen Yuan ruffled his hair. “Let’s find the adult ones so I can be a tiger too, hm?”
“Yes!” Chengle navigated the Halloween store like he was born to it, leading them to the animal costumes in only a few seconds. His face crumpled. “I don’t think they have any white ones.”
“Let’s see.” The sheer volume here was much less, and Shen Yuan could easily reach the last few tigers. He rummaged through them, until finally – “There it is! It was at the back. Now we just need a lion one that’ll actually fit you, Binghe.” That task, however, proved easier said than done. “Don’t they have any extra-extra larges…” Shen Yuan muttered.
He heard a quiet, incomprehensible whisper, and looked up to see Luo Binghe walking towards the counter with measured, powerful steps. The clerk was, of course, a woman, but Chengle seemed… indifferent as Luo Binghe flashed her a charming grin and she disappeared into the back storage for a moment before emerging with a truly enormous bag. Luo Binghe brushed a gentle kiss over the backs of her knuckles, and Shen Yuan and Chengle screwed up their faces in unison.
“I thought I told you no wives?”
Luo Binghe cocked his head to the side in confusion, an oddly canine gesture that almost made Shen Yuan forget his annoyance. Almost. “But she’s not a wife. I was just saying thank you.”
He sighed. “Just… remember. No flirting. I’m going to pay,” he declared, and before either of the Luos could say anything he’d snatched the costumes out of their hands and swiped his credit card.
Chengle chattered excitedly the whole way back to the apartment, and Shen Yuan could barely keep up. Once they got home Shen Yuan put some Halloween movie on the television, but he himself could barely stay awake. He sat in the armchair dozing for what must have been at least half a shichen until Luo Binghe woke him with a gentle hand on his shoulder for dinner. There was less food than usual, likely in concession to the party snacks, and they ate very quickly before the doorbell rang. Shen Yuan accepted the package with a weary smile, opening it to show the prize he’d ordered.
“What’s that, Baba Yuan?”
“Face paint! So that way you can have stripes on your face too.”
Luo Binghe offered to apply it, and Shen Yuan took a myriad of photos as he worked with the utmost focus, the tip of his red tongue sticking out between his teeth.
“Awwwww, who’s the cutest little tiger?” he cooed as Chengle came bounding over, booping the little black-painted nose.
“Father Emperor said he wants to paint your face too with the white paint!”
Shen Yuan ruffled his hair. “Alright. Why don’t you go get changed into your tiger costume?”
Chengle ran off and Shen Yuan eased himself onto the stool, his knees creaking. “Go ahead, Binghe.”
He closed his eyes for the painting, but in addition to the cool touch of the brush he felt the moist, gentle warmth of breath against his face, and the tips of his ears flushed. It felt like both a second and an eternity before he was declared finished, but Shen Yuan stood up gradually and opened his eyes. “Thank you, Binghe.” He reached out and offered a couple of pats before venturing after his son to get dressed.
~~~
Shen Yuan took what must have been dozens of photos of the three of them once they were dressed — Chengle as the fluffiest, most adorable tiger with Dawang clutched in his arms, Luo Binghe as a hulking lion nearly out of the frame, and Shen Yuan himself, in the few pictures that featured him, smaller next to the two of them but still radiating joy.
They got to the party too late to enter the costume contest, much to Chengle’s chagrin, but they settled down on a set of hard plastic chairs to watch the prize awarding. “In third place, we have Maomao!” A girl with seaweed-green bangs reaching her eyes and a simple light-colored hanfu took the gift basket, full of all manner of treats. “Second place is Mercymorn the First!” White robes glimmering like an oil slick, the sharp-eyed woman accepted her own gift basket.
Change tugged on Luo Binghe’s sleeve, his eyes shining. “Do you think the tailors could make that fabric?”
“I’m sure they could. I know some spider demons who could probably do it even prettier.”
“And the one you’ve all been waiting for, the costume taking first, is this time awarded to a pair. Please give it up for the Flower Crowned Martial God and Crimson Rain Soaked Flower!”
These two were dressed in highly formal robes, one set white and one red, and Chengle watched with shining eyes. “Maybe they could look like that!”
After the final award was presented, Chengle made a beeline for the snack table. Shen Yuan watched him go with a fond smile, but soon found a tug on his wrist and let Luo Binghe drag him to the dance floor. It was amusing to see him, so schooled in courtly dances, attempting to emulate the other people around them, and Shen Yuan couldn’t hold in a bright, pealing laugh. Luo Binghe grinned at the sound, his eyes sparkling, and leaned forward.
“Happy Halloween, Binghe.”
“Happy Halloween.”
You can tell that Chengle is Bingge's son because if he doesn't get hugs, kisses, and affection from Shen Yuan he'll die. Shen Yuan will be in such danger after Bingge goes through his redemption arc and learns that puppy eyes are super effective against him
BY THE TIME BINGGE BINGMEIFIES, SHEN YUAN WILL HAVE TWO EXTREMELY POSSESSIVE TEARY-EYED GOOD BOYS WITH HIM
He literally won't be able to have any more children or a normal life. He'll have a hand for his son and his husband. If he lets go of them for even a moment, they will both start fighting over who has both hands and Shen Yuan will have to intervene again
SY, seeing Chengle: such sweet puppy eyes
SY, seeing Bingge after his redemption arc: ... oh fuck they were hereditary
