When he is hypnotised and crashes his car into a quarry - he would’ve been killed if not for Grizelda who convinces the Bloors to spare him.
When Count Harken is released into the city in Hidden King and enchants Amy into forgetting him.
When he fights the Green Knight during the final battle in Red Knight. Again, he survives thanks to Charlie who distracts the Green Knight at a crucial moment.
I know Charlie Bone is a kids series and the children in the series must be protected and saved, but I can’t help feeling kind of sorry for Lyell… the poor guy stayed missing for months after Charlie and Paton first realised he wasn’t really dead.
Even though Paton and Charlie kept saying they wanted to find him, they never really tried searching for him after they realised he was still alive somewhere.
Bone-Raven-Jones Family Vacation/GrannyHell Karaoke Fic

"MEMORYYYYY! TURN YOUR FAACE TO THE MOOOONLIGHT!"
At long last, the Jones-Bone-Raven family was on the tropical vacation they'd always talked about. Perhaps it shouldn't have surprised anyone that Maisie had a travel dossier. Apparently, she'd kept one for years, lovingly filing photos, sites, and hotel names for all the places she wanted to go in one big scrapbook of idle fantasies. If anyone had told the Maisie of three years ago that she would be hopping on a plane to the tropics with her daughter, son-in-law, two grandsons, and household nuisance-turned-lover, she probably would have laughed in their face--not unkindly, mind you, but she would have laughed. It was preposterous. Yet there they were, standing on the sparse grass at the edge of a white sand beach, thronged about by other tourists, with Grizelda standing on a stage in a hazy purple light, adding her emotional rendition of Grizzabella's ballad to the Club Med's ill-advised karaoke night. (It should be said, in defense of the good people who ran the Club Med, that they had never encountered anyone like Grizelda before. Almost no one had. If she hadn't been there, it might have gone differently, but you can't prepare for every extingency).
"She's terrible," Billy told Charlie, awestruck by the sheer discordance of the sound which was coming out of their grandmother's mouth. It sounded like a dying goose gargling with cherry limeade (and therefore in extra agony).
"I know," Charlie whispered, "but we have to be nice about it. Maisie will kill us if we're not."
He looked over at Maisie, who was gazing up at Grandma Bone with a wistful smile, seeing something none of the rest of them were seeing. Charlie would never quite understand how his once-feuding grandmothers had gotten together, but as little sense as it made, he was glad Maisie was happy.
Their parents walked over, one of their dad's arms around their mum's shoulders. Lyell had picked up a very un-Mr. Pilgrim-like tan, and Amy was wearing a sundress and a shell necklace she'd bought in town.
"Earplugs, boys?" Lyell offered quietly.
"How did you know?"
"I know my mother. She loves to sing, but her voice is something of an acquired taste, and I'm afraid I've never acquired it. Besides, you can never be too prepared when it comes to karaoke. It's a risky sport."
Billy looked quizzical, then started laughing. He was still getting used to his dad's slightly odd brand of humor.
"Are you going to sing anything?" Billy asked.
"Hopefully not; I've not much of a singing voice. Your mother, on the other hand..."
"Is only getting onstage if someone sings with me," Amy said firmly. "If any of you would like to, I will do it, but I'm not going up there alone. Not when so many people want a chance to sing."
"That's no problem, then," Charlie said. "There aren't as many people here anymore. I think Grandma scared a fourth of them away."
"Charlie, you shouldn't speak about your grandmother like that even though you're right," Lyell said. Amy chuckled.
"I think the song's nearly over now."
Sure enough, with a dramatic upthrust of her arms, Grandma Bone was embarking on the final verse. It was absolutely ear-splitting, but there was a beatific smile on her face. Charlie didn't think he'd ever seen her that happy, though she had been smiling more often recently, and more kindly. A lot had changed in the past year, and one thing it had revealed by contrast was just how unhappy she must have been. He was still angry at her for a lot of what she'd done, and he wasn't sure he'd ever fully forgive her for all her efforts to erase his father, but it still felt like a new beginning. Something of one, anyway.
"TOOOUCH MEEE...IT'S so EEEASY to LEEAVE MEEE...all ALONE with my MEMORIES...of my DAYS in the SUNNN...With the dawn comes the meaning of WHAT HAPPINESS IS...for a NEW DAY has begun..."
I know that Paton/Julia is the more popular ship in the series but Amy/Lyell has a more compelling love story, even if most of it is in backstory. I mean, they were so in love that they eloped even though Lyell’s family disapproved of their relationship, and they lived happily together for a few years and then Lyell disappeared and Amy believed he was dead for ten years.
Amy and Lyell’s love story could fill up an entire novel, imo.
