Saint Jean Savoia Castle
Saint Jean Savoia Castle is located in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, Italy. The castle was built in the 19thcentury by Queen Margherita and King Umberto I as a holiday residence. Unfortunately, King Umberto I was assassinated in 1900 and never stayed at the castle. After Queen Margherita’s death, the castle remained closed and was eventually sold in 1936 to the Moretti family, who sold it to Valle d’Aosta region in 1981. Although Saint Jean is referred to as a castle, it is actually a three-story villa that is rectangular in design. The architecture is done in an eclectic style with five neo-gothic towers, one designed in an octagonal shape. The towers are surrounded by differing spires. The central tower has a covered terraced and a cusped roof with dormers. The castle boasts a dining room, game room, lounges, as well as the private apartments of Queen Margherita. The castle has ornamental paintings, coffered ceilings, and sculpted paneling. The kitchen was built thirty meters away in another building and was connected to the castle’s dining room by a gallery equipped with a double track, which transported food in sealed electric carts. The property’s park-like setting houses a guesthouse and lodging for servants. The castle sits at the foot of the Colle Della Ranzola and has a beautiful view of the Lyskamm glacier and the valley. #Castles #CastleSaintJeanSavoia #Italy #Villa #ValleDAosta #GressoneySaintJean #CastleSavoia #LyskammGlacier #ColleDellaRanzola
