you hear iwaizumi’s footsteps follow yours as you walk out your office building.
it’s awfully strange. it's been months since you've seen your ex boyfriend, and for some reason, he's right here, carrying your bags, just like how he used to when you were still together.
iwaizumi was back in town for the week, and he randomly sent a message to you, asking whether he can meet you after work to walk you home. you brushed it off, thinking it's just some kind of prank. but really, you were kind of hoping to see him too.
you swore you'll be over him, that you'll forget the heartbreak you've endured for the past years, and the searing pain you felt when you recalled how iwaizumi desperately waits at your front door, pleading to fix your relationship, where both of you can talk about it and be okay again.
"i'm sorry, honey, please let's just talk-"
"you don't even make time for me," you fight back your tears, "you're too busy at work that you don't even bother spending time with me anymore."
"i'll be a better boyfriend, it's just," iwaizumi paused, trying to find the right words to say. "it's just that i need to help the japan team for their upcoming game."
he sounded stupid and he knows it. he felt such a bad boyfriend for not even able to balance everything in his life, he doesn't even realize how he's neglecting himself in the process.
"i can't handle seeing you lose yourself," you sniffled as you see iwaizumi's tear-stained cheeks and puffy eyes, "and losing me."
you continue walking, and you let him walk beside you now, feeling this sense of familiar comfort around him.
comparing to the last time you've seen iwaizumi, he's so much more different now; more mature, lean, and awfully taller. he even looks like he has his life together now. you kind of feel the butterflies on your stomach as you look up at him, and he has this comforting smile, as if you both picked up where you left off.
"so," iwaizumi clears his throat. "how's work going?"
"shitty," you scoffed. "could really use a drink, or ten hours of sleep."
"well," he hums. "i'm not leaving town until next week, wanna go out sometime?"
you're both slowly approaching your front door. you stop your footsteps, not because you're near the door, but because you're debating whether to accept his offer.
"for dinner, i meant," he faces you, now standing in front of you. "t's been awhile since we've last talked anyway, just wanted to hear from you again."
you missed him, and you're wondering if this is a risk you're willing to take.
maybe you both just needed time. or space. or the right headspace to recollect each other. to be ready for when the time comes.
and it's at this very moment you realized you might want to take a chance on iwaizumi again.
you open your front door and he puts your bags down just right at the entrance. you break the silence,
kageyama has grown restless at how you've been out of town for a few months for a work trip. you felt the same, undoubtedly so, as you have been constantly attending meetings and going overtime on top of your gruesome 9-5 job. it's insane to think, that just being away from your boyfriend for awhile makes you, for a lack of a better word, sad.
but it's understandable, because when you and kageyama are together, you're inseparable. waking up beside him, his hair messy and body warm that keeps you sane during the cold, him wrapping his arms around your waist as you prepare breakfast in the sunlit kitchen, and him kissing you goodbye, almost making you late for work, because he says "one more" before tackling you towards the couch, laughter echoing through the room.
your friends even know you're that one annoying (endearing) couple with how much he can't keep his hands off of you. a simple catchup dinner date with the two of your along with your friends turns into PDA central with just how adorably clingy and needy he gets around you, even kiyoomi mutters a curse while chuckling. but even so, they're glad kageyama met you, because his overly stiff and strict personality softened up, and it goes unnoticeable when he's around anyone. they're almost rather thankful you came into his life.
aside from his regular volleyball trainings and bickering with his best buddy shoyo with his unannounced facetime call updates in the middle of the night, he doesn't know what else to do. sure, he can take a stroll around town, or watch replays of his outstanding plays, but, you know, everything seems unappetizing without you. he just knows he can do anything and everything when you're with him. honestly, he's even more content doing nothing just knowing you're there around him.
so when you're back in town and knock on the door of your shared apartment, he wastes no time.
you squeal, your luggage rolling on the patio as you let go, as kageyama carries you for a hug that lasts long enough for you to wriggle from his grip. he finally brings you down, a big smile on his face, cheeks warm, and eyes content, the look on his face bringing you back to that time when he first confessed his feelings to you.
"hi," you stare and cup his face.
"hi," he goes in for a few kisses on your lips.
"tobio," you hum, wrapping your arms around his neck. "i missed you."
kageyama blushes even more as he melts to your touch, closing his eyes and letting out a big sigh of relief that you're finally back. he carries your bags for you, holding your hand on the other as you both walk inside your apartment,

you’ve been concerned with how kageyama’s been acting around you lately. ever since you finished your finals and when he came back from a long week of volleyball training, he’s been extra clingy with you.
he follows you everywhere you go, and you somehow find it annoying — but more on endearing.
any ordinary day wouldn’t be like this with him, though. usually, you’re the one who’s clingy with him, having numerous cuddle sessions in bed, even on the couch.

you try to push him away, but he won't budge. not that you don’t want that he’s like this, but you really have to finish making dinner or you won't have anything to eat for later.
“babe!” you hold onto his cheeks, almost squishing his face. he looks so cute, you wonder to yourself. “i like that you're being clingy to me right now, but i need to cook.”
kageyama says nothing, which you're particularly frightened of because-
“tobio! baby! put me down!” with one swift movement, you're being carried bridal-style by your boyfriend, and he's headed towards the living room now, not minding the mess made on the kitchen counter.
it’s like a scene straight out of a movie.
and you practically can’t do anything with kageyama's persistence.
what he wants, he gets.
so he plops you on the couch, putting his much bigger (and heavier) body on top of yours, not enough to squish you, but to look you in the eyes.
both of you stilled for a second.

you let him, laughing at the process, then he pulls away to say something.

it breaks his heart when he remembers you’re not his real girlfriend as he looks through photos of you together. he especially loves the pictures of you that one time you went to a fancy restaurant; you in that gorgeous, black dress, eyes sparkling and smile genuine, and he catches himself, he thinks to himself, does she feel the same way, or is it just for show?

your voice rings in kageyama’s ears, it’s one sentence he never wants to hear from you.
it’s been half a day since you two have been arguing, and since then, his pride never falters to just say what he wants.
but he wants to fix everything.
you aren’t on the same page as him, though. you were sick and tired of all these petty arguments, and this — and probably the last one — was the last straw.
and now’s the only time the two of you are sitting almost close to each other on the couch after avoiding him the whole day.
“are you leaving me?” kageyama asks, eyes glassy and hands quivering, but he still manages to keep his composure.
if you were to look at him, his heart might just shatter right then and there.
“it’s so heavy,” you feel your tears forming on the edges of your eyes, “i don’t want to feel this way anymore.”
kageyama wants to do something, he needs to do something to make you change your mind.
but he figures it’s all too late.
“we can still fix this,” he swallows his pride, his mind blank and throat dry, and it’s the only thing he can say, even if he knows it might not change anything.
you look at him, tears streaming down your face and you force a smile, “you only thought of that now because i’m close to giving up.”
“i’m sorry,” he feels his words aren’t enough, but he's trying. “please don’t go.”
he’s never used to being this vulnerable in front of anyone, in front of you, but there’s nothing better left for him to do.
kageyama reaches out to you, arms wrapping around you, and your tears start to fall faster.
he lets you cry on his chest — it’s a sight he’d prefer seeing than you walking out the door — and he rubs his palm on your back, whispering i’m sorry’s and i love you’s.
you wipe your tears before facing him. “i don’t know what to say.”
“you don’t have to say anything,” kageyama brushes the hair on your face before planting a kiss on your forehead. “we’ll make this work.”
he wraps his arms around you again, and he’s holding onto you like fish on a hook, never wanting to let go, “i don’t want to be in love with another, even in another life.”
