In "My Alter Ego" the plot revolves around Nicky hiding his superhero identity from his parents and the fact that, as Sonic, he can generate electric sparks when he expresses strong emotions, which will lead to Nicky hiding his powers from his parents. In other words, Nicky is repressing himself, but when he is Sonic, he has the freedom to express himself more confidently and be the person he could never be.
It would take some time for Nicky to embrace himself as Sonic even if it means stand up to the very people he loves the most.
The conflict between who he is and who he's becoming is pretty painful for him when his parents unintentionally death named the very hero he's trying to be.
