I can't tell you how nice it is to finally be able to share my art online again, but today I wanted to make something simple so here's an aesthetic collage for my genderbent version of Owen, aka Iona Ravenwood! Been ages since I've worked on my fanfics either and I've been considering writing a spinoff about Iona. But I dunno, should I? Or would it be better to just work on something else?

Hi! I'm super in love with you art its amazing! I actually have a question for your cyberpunk AU. I was wondering how does this society view magic? Considering how society is moving towards advancing technology and cybernetics. Is magic heavily looked down upon? Like are there laws put place that affects magic users?

Ooh! Interesting question!

In the cyberpunk universe, magic is actually a huge part of their world! They use magic, specifically rune magic, to power and operate their machines for various reasons like energy sources, sometimes to improve control, or, in general, to make their machines stronger or last longer.

However it’s so integrated and normalized in their world that very few actually understand how magic works, aside from specialists and people who study or work with rune magic. People just use the machines without actually trying to learn how the runes work or anything. (They don’t care how it works as long as it works. ) To the extent that there is oftentimes a LOT of misinformation about it. Some might not even be aware that their machines even use magic in the first place!

Kinda like with electricity in our world? We know how to operate our microwaves, toasters, cellphones, and lights but only to the extent so that we can use them. The general population can’t actually do any wiring or might not know how electricity really works. And some people try their hand at it thinking its not all that hard and it all just ends up a disaster.

Also, there aren’t really any laws that specifically affect magic users. Nothing is outlawed, per say. Maybe some specific spells and magic are deemed ‘illegal’ for being dangerous or causing problems. Or maybe certain types of magic can only be operated and used by licensed people. But that would probably be the extent of it. I would say there are some laws and regulations, depending on the area, that don’t permit certain magic uses or allow profit using magic without a license. Any magic used in crime is often handled the same as weapon usage in the law and justice systems. There are probably PLENTY of exceptions to that though.

And rune magic is probably some of the only magic practiced here. Magic isn’t technically dead, there are magical races and creatures that still use magic like the demons and angels, but on the surface the only magic you will really see is just rune magic. There might be a witch or two here and there or some magical creatures but they are very hard to come by. And even then they might not be ‘true’ witches, some can be scam artists or their magic is only rune magic and nothing else.

True magic is now kind of a lost art. A piece of the world’s history that has been forgotten to make way for technology. Soon, the world will be able to operate machinery without the use of runes and magic will cease to exist.

Point I’m trying to make here is, yes there is magic but nobody is really experimenting or practicing it a whole lot. It’s just factories printing runes and stuff on to machines for operation for later. So there’s no creativity in it. And people in their world are ignorant of magic’s power and don’t care to learn about it. The only people who really are considerate of magic and somewhat understand it is people who specifically study it (Holly is one of those people), and demons, angels, dishes, and other magical races/creatures. And either way magic is slowly dying out because of technology. 👍
