18th century scroll [?]
:The "magic scroll" consists of seven pieces of paper joined together. On the front are 58 seals, crosses and magic signs drawn in red and black, as well as abbreviations and texts in German and Latin. The edges are decorated with colorfully painted floral ornaments. The back features red three-bar crosses and mysterious-sounding texts and words.
At the beginning of the scroll is the heading in Gothic minuscule: "VINCULUM SEUCLA VICULAE" This is followed by 32 circular seals (sigilla) arranged one below the other and numbered from 1 to 32. The respective provision emerges from the associated signatures, e.g. B.: "1. for fire and water; 2. for unfaithfulness and falsehood; 3. for unjust death". The 32 seals are related to the assumed age of Christ, which the opening words "Great work and virtue hath after the age of our Lord Jesus Christ" indicate. Under the 32nd seal are the words "End of the length of Jesus Christ."
This refers to the so-called "Lengths of Christ" used as amulets, strips of paper inscribed with prayers and promises, which are said to correspond to the length of Christ's body and should therefore have special powers. After the 32nd seal follows a "prisoner liberation spell" below which six more seals are arranged. The following texts are in Latin. There are also various magical signs such as six-pointed star or pentacle and an initial blessing against the plague, the so-called Zachariah blessing.
