(Will McLean, Best of Dragon Magazine Vol V, May 1986; reprinted from Dragon 50, June 1981) In OD&D all magic swords were intelligent and had unique personalities defined by their alignment and ego ratings, and sometimes had their own magical mental powers. AD&D changed this to 25% of magic swords, while the rest simply gave bonuses or the occasional special ability like other magic weapons.
Did an art collaboration with a five year old who likes magic swords as much as I do, very pleased with the results.
He got upset about how he couldn’t stay in the lines and that maybe the colors were wrong, and I told him that he was still learning and that it was ok to not to be perfect. Then I told him that people use funny colors and even go outside of the lines on purpose sometimes and showed him a picture from the Jujutsu Kaisen outro and everything was ok again.
Anyway I decided that applies to me and you too. It’s ok to not get it right the first time or the hundredth time. Something imperfect is better than not trying at all, and the experience you gain from aiming higher than your current ability will add up over time. Plus maybe you’re on to something with the bright green sword.
