We live in a perpetual state of transition, always in the space between beginnings, relationships, lessons, accomplishments, heartaches, and conclusions. Change is the one universal constant, and we never fully "arrive" because reaching one destination only marks the beginning of our next journey. When we focus too intensely on the ever present motion under our feet we become anxious, exhausted, distracted, and ill. By fixating on the unsettling feeling that we are never fully settled, we make ourselves prone to self-sabotage, wherein we seek rigid stability and control at the expense of our own growth and the growth of our relationships with others. My wanderlust always emerges most powerfully in the fall because it allows me to see transition in process. The vivid red leaves contrast sharply with the bright green remnants of summer. The clean, crisp air carries with it the contradictory scent of decay and damp soil. The rain and dense fog that roll in during the early morning hours give way to brilliant sunlight that casts long shadows as it sets over the horizon in the late afternoon. Silence settles over everything as animals migrate to warmer places or hunker down to face the bitter winter and people seek refuge in the warmth of their homes. Fall is a snapshot in time where the bold contrasts all around us showcase the transformations that are not always so clear to us.
