Hey raven! I have a question for you:
What is your opinion on when a chracter who is a white passing person of colour gets portrayed by the fandom in fanart as not white passing? For exemple Zoya from the grishaverse who being white passing is somewhat a part of her chracter arc and after that some parts of the fandom started drawing her as not white passing.
I know it's slightly different in each chracter and in times where it happens the characters have traits that people of colour wouldn't have (like Zoya having blue eyes or saidy from the red pyramid having dirty blond hair)
anyway, i wanted to know what you think about it (also i dont mind also rding any add-ons by everyone who is reading this lol)
ohh this is such an interesting question. i'll use your example of zoya to say i have...mixed feelings about this? mainly bc there are two aspects to consider when it comes to this:
white passing/lightskinned poc irl have a level of privilege that darkskinned poc don't
(that being said) they're no less valid than people who are visibly poc
i don't think the issue of drawing white passing characters as not white passing is intentionally racist, but it is very iffy and makes me uncomfortable for these 2 reasons:
by liberally changing their appearance, it erases the huge difference in treatment of white-passing characters as compared to characters of color who are not white passing
it also implies (not always, but sometimes) that characters of color have to visibly look not white-passing in order for them to be considered a valid part of their ethnicity
if that makes sense? zoya was initially supposed to be white (she has blue eyes from the first series on) but leigh bardugo decided to have her be half-suli. but the way she's perceived is often as a white woman especially in the grisha trilogy, and this affects her own feelings about her identity as well as the level of privilege she has.
so while making her non-white passing is an understandable attempt at diversity, it takes away from the specific experiences of the character as a woc who is white passing. i think fandoms should focus on giving the same amount of attention to darkskinned characters and stop whitewashing them (especially jesper, who is repeatedly stated to be darkskinned in the books) because the performativity of it all really rankles sometimes.
*insert obligatory disclaimer that i know not every fanartist has this intention or these implications, its just some factors that didnt sit right with me*
