I can't put into words how disgusted and perplexed I am with how the final season of this highly anticipated and potentially beautiful and empowering story was handled. It felt like I witnessed giant hands grab my favourite characters and shove them violently into boxes they don’t fit in--each Volume, the boxes get smaller and smaller--until the characters molded into the shape of the boxes, suffocating and dying. This reflects what I have seen in real life--what people have done to me in the past--and it was painful to watch. I watched the show because it gave me hope and a sense of empowerment. It broke many stereotypes, conveying the message not to limit oneself and to show that those who try to bring you down are already beneath you.
After watching Volume 1, I knew the rest of Season 5 was going to be disappointing. The season began with cliché and expository dialogue, repetitive plot points, and the flanderization and neglect of characters, along with unnecessary moments that eliminated any chance of addressing plot holes. It feels like they dumbed down the show for second-screen viewers--constantly TELLING instead of showing, and that’s one of the things that reduced the show’s immersiveness--it’s complexity and authenticity. They pulled out the foundations of a very tall building--and for some reason, they believed it would still stand tall. Actually--no--they just didn’t care, and let the building fall and crush many people.
I do not regret making this blog and bylering the fuck out with you guys, because for the first time in my life, I feel like I have found a community where I belong. I enjoyed our inside jokes, amazing theories, and beautiful fanfics and fanart. As I said before, this experience will FOREVER be a core memory, and the “noise” outside byler tumblr can’t ruin that for me.
