One need to mention conservation here. Borneo where Orangutans live is currently covered with palm oil plantations. Previously it was rubber plantations. Sadly, these plantations do not support biodiversity - only snakes and rats flourish currently among the palms. There are regulations to force farmers in Malayan Borneo to leave a percentage of their property undeveloped as wildlife corridors but there is little oversight or planning. The areas left are often cliffs, ravines, and areas already difficult to plant, they are not designed to be continuous from one plot of land to the next and are therefore relatively useless, as a ‘corridor’ - though better than nothing. If these amazing animals are going to outlive us, they need help to do so.
Not using products containing palm oil is one way to help but difficult to do since it’s in everything from food, to beauty products, to cleaning products, and more. Some companies are starting to promote palm oil free products so keep your eyes open.
In captive environments, orangutans have lived for over 60 years. Wild females at one study site who were adolescents back in 1971 are still alive today and bearing offspring.
Orangutans are primarily solitary unless food is plentiful. Moms and their young sometimes live together for decades and she may only have one baby every 8-12 years. They are doting parents and very affectionate with each other.
