Your stomach had felt off since you'd woken, a fact that you'd hidden from your partners. They were mother hens at best, and mama bears at worst when you were sick or injured. Neither Cassian or Nesta were afraid of upsetting you if it meant your safety and health was secured. That's what mattered to them, above all else.

It was sweet most of the time, but you really wanted to go to family dinner tonight.

Lucien was going to propose to Elain, finally, and you were the only one who knew in advance. And you needed to see her reaction. 'Lain had become your best friend since she'd moved to Velaris, and was the entire reason you met Cassian and Nesta, the reason you had found love.

The least you could do was be there to support Elain when her love proposed to her, stomach ache be damned.

All day you persisted, sipping on mild flavored teas and water, and having a plain cracker occasionally as you did your work, looking over ledgers for the bank to ensure everything was in proper order.

Even getting ready for dinner, with Cassian undressing you and Nesta's gentle touch redressing you in a warm dress, you were able to keep everything down.

But once the food was placed on the table, the usually delicious smell of roasted meats, vegetables, and spices filling the room?

You bolted to the bathroom, just barely managing to get the lid of the toilet opened before you were emptying the contents of your stomach into it. Cool hands met your cheeks when you had a slight reprieve, another set tying your hair back. You continued heaving even after your stomach was empty, retching so much that by the time it stopped, all you were able to do was slump against the toilet seat, not caring about how dirty it may have been.

Once you'd been still for five minutes, a pair of strong arms wrapped around you, the clean scent of winter winds and embers a balm to how disgusting you felt.

You were carried into one of the River House's bedrooms and into the adjoining bathroom, and Cassian carefully set you on your feet, keeping his arms around you to help you stay upright.

Nesta appeared in front of you a moment later, lifting a glass of water to your lips. "Rinse your mouth out, love," she said softly, and you followed her instructions. Nes had thought ahead as always, the tiniest bit of peppermint oil added to the water - just enough to clear out the taste of sick left in your mouth.

Once you'd finished, you tried walking to the bed, only for Cassian to lift you into his arms once more, walking the ten paces to the bed and settling you underneath covers that had already been pulled back.

"I can pull the covers up myself," you said weakly as Cassian and Nesta both pulled up a side of the blankets, tucking the edges around your body snugly.

"From what we just witnessed, you can barely stand, Y/N," Cassian said, and you could hear the tears in his voice.

"How long have you been feeling ill?" Nesta asked, her concerned silvery eyes on you. "You didn't have much come up, it had to have been for a few hours at least," she said pointedly when you neglected to answer her, feigning sleep instead.

You sighed and opened your eyes, your own heart hurt by the concern in their eyes. "Since this morning..." you mumbled, closing your eyes again to avoid the disappointment that would likely be on their faces.

"But why not tell us?"

"Cause..." you huffed out a breath as poutily as you could. "You can't tell anyone, but Lucien was planning to propose tonight and I really wanted to be there for them."

Cassian let out a relieved breath and laid down next to you, but Nesta hummed thoughtfully. "I still wish you'd told us. Seeing you run off at the start of dinner scared me," she admitted.

"I know... but you would have kept me from dinner," you whined softly.

"True." Nesta laid down next to you now, a cool hand coming to cup your warmed cheek. "Just tell us if you need a bowl, love. We'll be here until you're better. But for now, I think you should sleep," Nes suggested, pressing a gentle kiss to your forehead.

Cassian brought a wing up to cover the three of you, blocking out the soft faelights in the room. "Let us know if you need anything, sweetheart," he cooed, his lips meeting you cheeks.

Mama bears they might be, but you didn't think you could have them any other way, now.

there’s something sooooooo…heart wrenching about seeing wild animals being mothers. the maternal instinct. you can literally feel it. a mother’s love transcends species. i know this isn’t anything new but my god man. its so weird how human it is. i see my late mom in mama bears when they’re snapping at their cubs, and in mama lions when they’re trying to go to sleep with their baby flailing about, and in mama birds that feed their chicks in the nest they built with their own beaks. they are wild animals and yet they bathe their kids with such gentleness. what’s going to grow up to become some ferocious animal is clinging to the legs of their mama bcs thats mama, and who else is there but the one who gives you kisses and makes sure you’re safe and your belly is full? and one day the kids will have kids of their own and when they’re carrying their young by the napes of their necks and licking them clean, they’re carrying out what’s ingrained into their instincts, the same way their mama did. isn’t that funny? how animals just. take care of their young? how love exists in so many forms? how the winged and the fur-covered and the scaled all know what it is like to feel small and soft with mama?
