Inktober day 8: Maman Brigitte, death loa from Haitian voodoo, protects graves and the wife of Baron Samedai
"Brigitte's family tree!" (My headcannon)
The splatters from the other page practically begged me to make them into some of Brigid’s freckles.
Brighid/Brig is an ancient Irish goddess associated with fire, among other things, and renowned with many blessings from protection to poetry. The most ancient surviving texts recounting her to this day describe her having two sisters of the same name, Brighid the Smith, associated with metalworks in both weaponry and jewelry, and Brighid the Healer, associated with herbalism and song. This has led to Brighid being hailed as a Triple Goddess in her ancient form. ☘️
Indeed the triplicate of Brigid seems to have transformed along with the Irish diaspora following Catholicism and English oppression. St. Brighid appeared in Ireland under the rule of the Catholic Church, most likely another example of Christianizing pagan figures as seen cross culturally. The Feast of St. Brighid coincides with the ancient Celtic pagan late winter festival of Imbolc on the first of February after all.
Among the African diaspora in the Caribbean, where English colonists sent both enslaved Africans and indentured Irish servants to work sugar and other plantations, revered loa of the Voudun pantheon from West Africa were famously hidden within icons of Catholic saints. It is within this particular tradition that Mama Brigitte is found with her flaming red hair, having been married into the Ghede Spirit family to Baron Samedi, syncretized with St. Brighid. Her feast day varies among Vodouisants from coinciding with Imbolc or All Saints Day, which is also when Dia de los Muertos (as a result of the colonial church) is on November 2nd. Still many acknowledge that Mama Brigette came from Ireland. With this consideration of the origins of Samedi’s bride, their union is representative of the legacy of Irish and African history under European colonial exploitations- we Irish descendants practicing paganism today may do well to remember this manifestation of blessed, vibrant, poetic, protective Brighid’s triplicity in solidarity against the exploitations of empires that go on to this day. ❤️🔥

My favorite voodoo goddess and someone I can relate to! Such an elegant lady like her must be drawn. ✨
Dream Drama LXXI
Went to see Mama B again. Had to take Little Man with me. I was apprehensive and scared to see her again because I was going to ask about Baron and Sachael. I went into the “bookstore” and told the clerk I was there for an appointment, she led me and LM into the back and pulled a switch so a secret door would open. I said thank you and we went inside. It was two or three rooms. A bathroom, a kitchenette, and the living/bedroom. Mama B and her family were all sitting around. When I walked in, a lady(granddaughter/assistant from last time) took LM and said Mama would be right with me. Then asked why I missed my last appointment. I told her “because of troubles.” Mama came and took me by the hand “We all have troubles. What name be you?” “Legally, I’m C– M– but I mostly use C– W–” “In the eyes of God you are a W–. We go by God’s law, not man’s.” She sat me down in a plush chair and leaned forward. “We had three appointments. You missed one.” “I know, I’m sorry. After our first appointment, I left my abusive ex and have had trouble getting back here. Then I saw you had moved and it took me a while to relocate you.” Mama nodded, “this is acceptable. Now, how dirty are you?” “I can’t cleanse very well. My mind won’t focus and let me pull out all the muck.
She nods again and tossed a bag of stuff into my lap. The only thing I can make out is rose water, everything else has a French label. She grabs my purse and pulls out a pouch. “What’s here?” And opens it up. There’s cigars, a lot of quartz points, herbs and other stuff inside. I give her a reason for everything, like purification, mental clearness, etc. I take a cigar and start smoking it. She makes some face, I can’t remember if it was disgust or what. She leans forward and tells me “let’s begin,” and places her finger at the base of my skull in the back of my neck and pushes. I feel tenseness drop and fall as she speaks over me, I don’t pay attention to the words. But I know, the only reason I’m feeling better is because she’s hit a pressure point and not because of “magic.” She waves a hand over my face and tells me to breathe deeply as her granddaughter/assistant waves a burning bundle of herbs before me. Something flashes in my mind, words and a memory. I pull back and start coughing. Mama sits back and puts her hands on her knees. “Don’t miss next time and maybe it won’t be so bad.” I start to pack things back into my purse and stop. “Mama, may I ask you a question?” She nods her head down and makes a slight sweeping gesture with her hand, a smile tucked in the corner of her mouth. “And I ask this as no offense to any of you. But I don’t know where else to go or who to ask. And I’ve struggled with asking you for a while as well.” The whole family creeps closer or peeks in from behind doors to listen. “I’ve been troubled by someone who calls himself Baron. And I don’t know what to do. I don’t know if he’s actually Baron or an imposter.“ Mama opens her mouth to speak when the computer behind her beeps and flashes red on the screen. I get up to read the text: Time allotment over. You lost. He wins. Say goodbye now.” Lower down I see a block with text in a box "smoked in front of children" Mama tuts and gets up. I see she’s wearing a purple and teal windbreaker with red rosettes. The granddaughter holds out a red windbreaker and Mama shakes her head. “Child’s troubled. I won’t do that this time.” A small girl leads LM out the kitchenette and tugs on my shirt. “If you ask nicely, sometimes Mama gives the children candies. And he’s been real good so he’ll get one.” I look up at Mama who is smiling and holding a hand behind her back. “Little Man, would you like a candy?” He nods and walks over to her as she holds out a hand with the strawberry candies. I wake up.
