A/N: Bolded words are the song lyrics, I take no credit for those.
Another fight, another screaming match that ended in you crying and Sy storming off. You tried to weather his moods, his closed off nature. You knew that his job was not easy and that he’d seen more than his fair share of shit in the sandbox and he’d alluded a few times to the hard times the preceded his military life. But he still had told you and it’s not that you felt like you needed to know in particular it was more that feeling of not being trusted that really upset you.
Tonight’s fight was no different, save for the fact that Sy returned before midnight and slumped on the door. You pulled your bathrobe tighter around you and tiptoed to the living room to find Sy with his head tucked in his hands, looking so small for a man of his stature and rank. You slipped quietly across the room settling down on the couch next to him and gently placing your hand on his shoulder.
He grunts and you wet your lips.
“Baby, I’m sorry. If you’re not ready to tell me or you don’t trust me with that yet, I understand. I just want you to know that you can trust me,” your voice wobbles slightly, causing Sy to turn his head to glance at you.
“Shit, Bug, that’s not it. I trust ya, I trust ya with my life, Bug, I just…” he pauses, running a hand over his buzzed head, “I just don’t know if you’re gonna wanna stay with me after you hear everything.”
You let out a small whimper and drop to your knees, slotting yourself between his knees and cupping his face in your soft hands. “James Syverson, there is nothing that you could tell me that would send me running. I love you.”
He scrunches up his face and leans forward to rest his forehead against yours, “You can’t say that.”
“Yes, I can. I’m in this for the long haul, baby. Ya just gotta let me in, lay your burdens down,” you whisper, stroking his scruffy cheeks with your thumbs.
Sy is silent for a few moments, then wets his lips, “What if I told you about my little nothing town?, The two room house where I came from, The man that I got my name from, I don't even know where he is now.”
His words tug at your heart and but you say nothing, instead let him continue.
“What if I told you sometimes I lose my faith?, I wonder why someone like you would even talk to me, What if I told you there's no fixing me, 'Cause everybody's already tried,” he says, voice breaking slightly. You can feel his tears, brushing against your thumbs, but don’t say anything.
He takes a shuddering breathe and then pulls back to look at you. “If I told you sometimes I get jealous, Sometimes I'm half crazy, Would you say the hell with me,” his voice shudders and he closes his eyes as he repeats that, “the hell with me?If I told you I barely know what love is, But girl, if that's what this is, I don't wanna let it slip away,” he finishes, opening up his blue eyes and fixes you with a soft gaze.
“Oh, baby, Sy,” you push yourself up and settle in his lap before wrapping your arms around him tightly. “I’m never gonna hold your past against you or struggles. Part of a relationship is learning to lean on each other and I’m stronger than I look okay?”
He nods and lets out a small laugh. “So you’re not gonna leave me, Bug?”
You shake your head and press a kiss to his widow peak. “I’m not going anywhere baby, I’m hear for the good, the bad and the ugly.”
He lets out a heavy sigh, “Gotta admit it feels good to get that off my chest.”
You smile, “I bet it does.” You running the back of your hand over his cheek, he chases your touch like a touch starved animal.
“Bug?” he asks, after a moment.
“What if I don’t wanna stay here forever?”
“Like I don’t see myself staying in this town. I know it’s your hometown and everyone has welcomed me in, but before we met, while I way still deploying over seas. I got it in my head that I wanted to have a ranch in somewhere like Montana, get a couple of horses and live away from the city.”
You search his face for a moment. You can see the worry there as he laid this secret dream out at your feet. “I can write anywhere, baby,” you murmur.
His eyes flick back up to meet your eyes. “You’d go with me?”
You nod, “I’d follow you anywhere.”
“But what about your family?” he asks, “I know you guys are close.”
You shrug, “They can visit or we can visit. Details don’t matter right now, but there are options.”
“How’d a guy like me, get a girl like you?” he asks, cupping your cheek.
You giggle, “Sy, you are a good man, you deserve to be happy, no matter what stupid things you did or where you came from. All of those things good or bad, have made you the wonderful, strong and loving man that you are today. You were shaped by all the good and the bad and now you’re the man, I love not in spite of those things but because of those things.”
He swallows thickly and leans into kiss you again. “I love you so fuckin much, Bug.”
You wrap your arms tighter around him and rest your cheek against his. “I love you too, Sy, so much.”
Relief wrapped the two of you in a warm blanket as you sat intertwined as Sy rambled on about his cowboy dreams and you slowly drifted off in his arms.
