Yesterday, the Grandview Heights Memorial Day Parade stepped off down First Avenue in Grandview Heights, as the inner-ring suburb celebrated Memorial Day. This is the second of two Memorial Day events in Grandview, as the Blue Star Ceremony was held on Thursday night at Larry Larson Middle School, moved from Memorial Park, due to the weather.

DJBC Tumblr Summer '21 - Grandview Heights Blue Star Memorial Day Ceremony 2021

Memorial Day Weekend. What comes to mind for most is the beginning of Summer, weekends of barbeques, pool parties, glamping, baseball, bourbon, and beer. That is not the case. That is not the purpose of Memorial Day.

In Central Ohio, Memorial Day Commemorations get started on the Thursday before Memorial Day. In Grandview Heights, the closest suburb to Downtown Columbus, the small community commemorates those from the Grandview and Marble Cliff communities who gave their lives in service to the United States Military every year on the Thursday evening before Memorial Day with a ceremony at Memorial Park on Northwest Boulevard and Oxley Road.

With last year's Ceremony canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, this was the first Blue Star Ceremony for current Grandview Mayor Greta M. Kearns, who took office in January 2020.

Weather permitting, the first Central Ohio Parade* since COVID will take place tomorrow morning as the Grandview Memorial Day Parade is scheduled to take place along First Avenue from Cambridge Boulevard to Memorial Park. The parade could be canceled in the event of inclement weather, as there is expected rain on Saturday, with temperatures struggling to get out of the 50s (after flirting with 90 at the beginning of this week).

Taste of Tri-Village 2016

The first-ever Taste of Tri-Village in its current name (it was formerly the Taste of Upper Arlington), was held at Northam Park on August 4.  In it’s 23rd year at Northam Park, the annual summer festival brought in activities and food for the whole community of Upper Arlington (and even a rainbow appeared over Northam Park).  The Tri-Village Partnership was the organizer of the event, which was formerly run by the Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce, which merged the Grandview Chamber of Commerce in February of 2016 to form the Tri-Village Partnership, led by Michelle Wilson, who led the Grandview Chamber for several years, and took over reigns of the Upper Arlington Chamber prior to the merge.

Grandview Heights Memorial Day Parade - 2016

While Fourth of July Parades are huge in some municipalities (i.e. Dublin, Upper Arlington, Bexley, Westerville), Memorial Day Parades take place in the ones that don’t have July Fourth Parades (Grove City, Powell, Worthington, Grandview).  The first of the handful of area Memorial Day Parades takes place the Saturday morning of Memorial Day Weekend along First Avenue in Grandview Heights.  The preceding Thursday, at the Memorial Park on Northwest Boulevard, there is a service in remembrance of the Grandview and Marble Cliff area residents who gave their lives for our country.  But, back to the parade.  On Saturdays, the neighborhood comes out for the annual parade, as floats, little league teams, the Grandview Heights High School Marching Band, and Grandview dignitaries all come out for the parade.

A Trip Around Columbus: Grandview

Grandview Heights is the closest suburb to Downtown Columbus (and the smallest).  Founded in 1901, it was part of the larger hamlet of “Marble Cliff”, when what is present-day Marble Cliff separated itself into its own little village.  In 1906, Grandview Heights became its own village, but was formed by annexation in 1912, and became a city in 1931.  In 1927, the Grandview Avenue Bank Block, one of the first of its kind in the country, was built in the 1200 block of Grandview Avenue.  Today, Grandview, along with Fifth by Northwest, the Columbus neighborhood to the immediate north of Grandview Heights, have shops, local restaurants and businesses that have gotten acclaim in the Columbus community.
