"Saw" (2004) is a dark and tense thriller that combines an eerie atmosphere with unexpected plot twists. Director James Wan created a new approach to horror, but the film suffers from uneven pacing and simple dialogue. Cary Elwes and Lee Whannell convincingly embody the characters who are forced to play the brutal game of the serial killer Jigsaw.

Despite the influence of the film, its excessive graphicness may be shocking to some viewers. Three stars is an intriguing start to the series with potential for improvement.
