Shit Robot – We Got a Love (DFA Records)

“Feels Real,” with Luke Jenner of the Rapture, comes out slinking with a magnetic bass line, and Jenner goes from a Barry and Robin Gibb falsetto to a soaring level as he croons, "I think you always want / my love!"; Lambkin breaks down the track to set tension before hurling the ensemble back in with intensity to match the singer. Adopting a minimal electro aesthetic, “Do It (Right)” features early ‘90s club hero Lidell Townsell who petitions, “I wanna know if you know how to jack your body?” and then proceeds to instruct his girl how said body jacking is accomplished. These two tracks read a bit corny on paper, but Lambkin’s knowledge of genre, song form and structure and how to make music evolve (i.e. filters, not just slapping in new sounds when something gets boring) bundle up the awkwardness with cool to present fresh ink amidst the droves of novice DJ nostalgists. Further, the opener and closer, “The Secret” and “We Got A Love,” feature Reggie Watts  That’s the Renaissance comedian whose resume includes scores for Louis CK, Key & Peele, voiceover for Adult Swim as well as legendary standup that involves looping pedals – he’s the avant-garde Jack Black, so to speak.  And as Black is to metal vocalists, Watts is a master character actor who does a passionate Detroit soul, even when fed through a vocoder.

Like a wax museum or curio cabinet, DFA Records preserves and celebrates history. The crew follows imprints of influences, recreates them in a lab and adds a few modifications (usually warmth in the recording process to replace the tinny, once innovative production of thirty years ago) to avoid blatant pastiche. LCD Soundsystem was Murphy’s time travel to 1980 where he offered what could have happened in the two months between the end of Joy Division and beginning of New Order; the duo behind Prinzhorn Dance School is transported from the same era, offering the choppy rawness of New York No Wave (think DNA). And funk-fueled disco will never die while Shit Robot’s battery is alive and pulsing.
