Birth of Margaret of Austria

Born on July 5, 1522 in Oudenaarde in the Holy Roman Empire, Margaret of Austria was the illegitimate daughter of Emperor Charles V. Despite her birth status, she was recognized and carefully educated within the Habsburg sphere, receiving a noble upbringing that prepared her for political life in Renaissance Europe. Her early life reflected the complex dynastic politics of the Habsburg court, where illegitimate children could still play important diplomatic roles.

Margaret went on to become Duchess of Parma and served as a significant political figure in the Low Countries during a turbulent period of religious and political conflict. As governor of the Netherlands, she worked to maintain Habsburg authority while navigating the growing tensions of the Protestant Reformation. She died in 1586, remembered as a capable and pragmatic ruler who helped stabilize imperial rule in a volatile region.

Jan Mostaert (circa 1475-1552/53) painted this portrait of a man presumably between 1520 and 1525. Mostaert worked as painter for Margaret of Austria (1480-1530), the aunt of Charles V who acted as governor of the Netherlands on behalf of her nephew from 1507 to 1515 and again from 1519 till her death. It has been suggested that the man portrayed here might be Christophle le More, an archer who was a member of Charles V’s bodyguard. Margaret of Austria by Bernard van Orley and his workshop. This portrait from @monasterebrou shows Margaret as a devout widow. She lost her mother Mary of Burgundy at a very young age, was engaged to but later discarded by Charles VIII of France, lost her first husband Juan Prince of Asturias after only six months of mariage and her second husband Philibert II of Savoy passed away at the tender age of 24.
