Doing a Downton Abbey rewatch and I had forgotten that they name drop Hitler specifically as one of the guys behind the murder of Michael Gregson. That is wild. Like I know it's just the show doing what it does hinting at things the characters don't realise will become big deals in the future that we know will but damn WW2 was going to be traumatising enough for the family with George turning 18 judt as it breaks out so 100% fighting in it but can you imagine Edith learning the man who killed Marigold's father is literally the German head of state now and seeing him on war posters and in movies like damn. How old do you think Marigold is when she tells her the truth about her parentage, how do you think it affected how they saw the war?

Rewatched Downtown Abbey as per winter tradition, and I was pondering what Mary's view on Marigold would be. I wondered about Mary and Marigold's relationship - if they would have one, how would Mary view Marigold from finding out and how that relationship develops to Edith's wedding and beyond.

Lovely pictures of Edith in the official New Era book

Super cute pic of Edith and Marigold (who got to speak! “Mummy! Come play with us!” sooooo sweet!)

Edith looking glam in France with Bertie, and really lovely outfit from the end of the film, which we got a glimpse of in the first film and I always wanted a better look at. It’s not so clear in the book, but Edith looked amazing at Violet’s funeral as well (just as Violet would have wanted. Gotta send her off in style).

These people are way too easy on Mary. She is a straight up bitch who goes out of her way to make people feel small. She particularly likes to make Edith feel as absolutely awful as possible and I’m supposed to care it’s because she’s sad? Go fuck yourself Mary. Tom and Edith also lost someone they love. Tom lost the absolute love of his life, I think he’s the only one in the group. And they don’t try and tear people down all day.

She goes out of her way to be vicious and mean. To make sure Edith doesn’t get married and doesn’t outrank her. She makes up these bull shit excuses. And then cries bc her new boyfriend is a race car driver and she doesn’t want him to die. What the fuck does that have to do with Edith and Marigold?! Nothing. This family doesn’t give her a hard enough time.

I loved Tom yelling at her and Edith finally calling her a bitch. But she needed to hear it more and from more people. Tear Mary down like she does to everyone else no one deserves it more.

Also side rant. When Robert asks Tom how Mary figured out about Marigold and Tom responded that Mary wasn’t an idiot. That’s giving her way too much credit. She in no way figured it out on her own. She heard her mom and Grandmother talking about it. Edith was right Mary is too self-centered and selfish if she hadn’t have heard that conversation she would still have no idea who Marigold really was

Which also makes her bullshit excuses afterwards so annoying. “How could I know you hadn’t told him the truth” because no one told you???
