The manatee appears as a shadowed giant in warm salty seas. It bobbed casually over the coral reef. It had traveled far. From the fresh delicious river waters, past thunderous and treacherous boats, through the deep blue past the barrier reef, and all the way across Turneffe Atoll. I spent the last few days with an amazing group of managers, biologists, and conservationists at the marine mammal stranding response training held by the Belize Marine Mammal Stranding Network. Our dissections of a young manatee and dolphin were bittersweet and remarkable experiences; a chance to learn and prepare ourselves to be the most effective stranding responders we can be. As a team, we discussed best protocols for responding to different species of dolphins and made decisions essential to the welfare of the public and marine creatures. The #soundtrap acoustic recording system descends to the silty depths of the lagoon. Shallowish depths. It listens for dolphins as we flee back to the city. Last week, we spent several days learning about the amazing conservation and rehabilitation work being done at Wildtracks. The grounds quiver with booming howler monkey sounds. Their acoustic dominance is nullified when your eyes and ears are caught by the presence of an idling baby manatee, hungrily munching on a seagrass lunch. Khaleesi, a female Antillean manatee, returned to the property from her daytime lagoon adventures with her tag in tow. Our hard work out in the bay pays off as we gather our third day of dolphin photo identification photos. With good photos of each dorsal fin of these boisterous groups of bottlenose dolphins, we begin to unravel the mysteries of their movements throughout Belize and Mexico. Next step: analyze and match to our transnational catalogs!!!!
