Chopper (2000)
Vincent Van Couch (ODD13)
Brewery : ODD13 Beer : Vincent Van Couch Style : American Wild Ale / Wild Ale / Sour Variance : None
8 / 10
Nobody else has the balls to say it so I guess I’ll have to. Vincent Van Gogh was a pussy. This little bitch only cut off one ear and that’s not tough at all. This bad ass mother fucker from Australia named Mark “Chopper” Read cut off parts of both of his ears just so he could get out of Pentridge Prison’s H division and didn’t have to go give them as presents to some lowly maid. Vincent Van Couch on the other hand, is up there with Chopper as a bad ass that’s only here to punish your taste buds. This is my last brew by ODD13 and all I can say is that I am happier than a juggalo at the Faygo factory that I at least have one more can of this to hold me over until I can get these mitts on some more. This has a nice floral hops bitter bite to start with some lemon and citrus sweetness mixing in before that nice strong sour punch joins in to close things out. I feel like if Vincent ever needed a new couch to drink on, I’d lend him mine any time. Even better, maybe we could grab a beer sometime and sit on The Big Comfy Couch with Loonette and then cut her fucking ears off because clowns suck dick. If this is your first sour, I can see this being a solid starter because even though it has some pretty serious flavors going on, it remains balanced and refreshing as hell. For you bastards, stop reading and go grab a can and couch it up!

Yani Gellman on Eric Bana's obscure, compelling performance as a volatile criminal in "Chopper."
“Bana plays a pathologically violent criminal living in and out of jail, but Chopper is unlike any outlaw I've ever seen. He is a hulking mass of internal and outward conflict; the outsider even criminals won't accept. Bana's Chopper is scary because he has no idea who he is. He looks like a gangster but looks out at the world like a boy. He is convinced that no matter how crazy he is, the world is crazier still. The character is so richly conceived -- equally sensitive and depraved -- that long after the film is over, I can't decide if Chopper is villain or hero.
(…)
What makes the character unique is that he has no openly stated objective throughout the film. He lives on the open seas of the criminal underworld. There is no grand plan. No big heist, no true love to pursue to the ends of the earth. Instead, there's only an invisible backstory of loss and isolation. With each progressively violent and outlandish act, Bana hints that Chopper seeks to redress his past by gaining attention and respect, in lieu of real companionship. Ultimately, Bana's singular performance reveals that a jail cell is not Chopper's obstacle in finding real companionship but his own inescapable, compulsive rage.”
In memory of Chopper Read
Fucking around tonight. Started thinking about Chopper Read. If you don’t know him, he was a maniac and an outlaw. More crazy, he was an Australian maniac and an outlaw. Close as I can tell he was the Ozzie version of Hunter S. Thompson, except Read was for real.
I did this quickly and it could be better, but it was for play. So if you don’t like it, piss off.

Mark “Chopper” Read was one of Australia’s most notorious criminals. He had a troubled upbringing and took to the life of crime at an early age, often getting into street fights and robbing drug dealers. He later progressed to kidnapping and torturing members of the criminal underworld. He was known to cut the toes off his victims with a bolt cutter as incentive to hand over their money. Between the ages of 20 and 38, Read spent only 13 months outside of prison, having been convicted of a wide variety of crimes, including assault, arson, kidnap, armed robbery, and firearms offences. Throughout those prison years, Read launched a prison war and it was during this time he had an inmate cut off his ears so he would be transferred to the mental health wing.
He died on October 9, 2013 at the age of 58 and the film “Chopper” was based on his life.
