HAPPY 25th ANNIVERSARY OF THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE
Given the troubled production history with this movie, it’s a miracle that we got one of the best comedies out of it. Aside from Aladdin and Hercules, Disney has not made a full blown comedy that’s as good as this. It juggles with that balance of dialogue humor and visual humor perfectly to the point where it’s reminiscent of classic cartoons (it’s basically a feature length Looney Tunes cartoon). It’s also one of the most quotable movies:
25 years later, it’s still one of Disney’s best animated films in my opinion. It’s nice to see it gained a cult following over the years, since the movie didn’t do well in theaters (Disney put most of their marketing effort into 102 Dalmatians during the 2000 holiday season, plus the marketing they did put into TENG was very lackluster). I got to watch the movie when it came to home video in Spring 2001 and had it on rotation in my VCR quite a bit during that summer. I finally got to see it on the big screen in early 2021 when Disney re-released it out of the blue (right when things started reopening following the pandemic), and it was a nice experience. Here’s to another 25 years for this comedic classic.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM THIS MOVIE?
People need to realize that just because a director made something they didn’t like that it doesn’t mean every movie they make is automatically bad. I didn’t like “Chicken Little”, but that doesn’t mean that I hate everything Mark Dindal has directed.
Prepare to hurt, and I don't mean emotionally like I do. CHICKEN LITTLE (2005) dir. Mark Dindal
