Hadestown, "Come Home With Me (Reprise)" || Severance, Season 2 Episode 10, "Cold Harbour"
[ORPHEUS] You called my name [EURYDICE] You came
okay but can you imagine Devon's pain? Watching all of that. Her brother was so complete and so happy and so in love and after that single moment all she can do is watch everything beautiful and joyful she's ever seen in him fade away. from that warm house stuffed with books to a gray empty flat. history professor to lumon's slave and yet she's there loving him throughout all of it. It hurt so much just to see it for an hour on screen and she LIVED through that slow hollowing for years and still still still she treats him with so much warmth and gentleness and utter understanding. The strength it takes to do that is insane she's such a wonderful person I love devon
mark scout: it's okay to murder people but it's never okay to disrespect your wife
The way procedural memory (writing, typing, making coffee) transcends severance, and love transcends severance… love isn’t just a feeling, it’s a conscious physical action
My thoughts about the Severance departments (WARNING: SEVERANCE SPOILERS!)
I think it's interesting how all of the departments shown so far seem to be related to Gemma/the Testing Floor. MDR is the most important one, actually working on the files that correlate to the rooms Gemma enters. However, O&D is shown to 3D print the objects she uses and encounters in each room. And, Mammalians Nurturable exists for the purpose of raising goats to be sacrificed whenever someone from the Testing Floor is killed. (Which suggests that Gemma is not the only test subject who is/has been kept prisoner on the Testing Floor. Why would they have a whole department dedicated to raising a ton of goats if they only needed to sacrifice one for Gemma and Gemma only? This somewhat supports my theory that Dylan, Irving, and maybe even Helly are refining data related to other test subjects. These other three test subjects would probably be people they love, who they believe have died. Petey and any other past MDR refiners would then have been refining even more test subjects.) It's hard to say what purpose Choreography and Merriment may have in relation to Gemma and the Testing Floor. However, maybe they play music in some of the rooms Gemma (or once again, any other test subjects who may or may not exist) enters?
Obviously, Gemma and any other possible test subjects are a very important part of Lumon, but the fact that every department seems to exist specifically to make/do something in relation to the Testing Floor shows just how important the Testing Floor is. At least so far, it doesn't seem like the departments exist for any reason BESIDES contributing to the Testing Floor in some shape or form. It's not like O&D is 3D printing objects to be sold to the public or something. And it's not like MDR is refining data for any other reason besides for creating the testing rooms. It makes me wonder why, specifically, Lumon is holding test subjects at all. Maybe it has something to do with reviving Kier? It's clearly something big if they're hiring all of these severed workers for the pure sake of contributing to the test subjects and the test rooms.
Gemma
I see some discourse that's lamenting the fact that Gemma is out there bereft of her husband and it's so sad and she's traumatized and- GUYS she got out of HELL!
Whatever the circumstances may be (and meta wise they're not going to recapture Gemma immediately it'd dismantle the whole show for her to be recaptured or killed now. She's going to be an antagonistic force in a sense because she'll be used to dismantle Lumon as a witness and evidence of their crimes thus threatening the existence of the severed floor and all innies) are people really arguing that this isn't a win?
That somehow her husband managing to save her and bring her back to life and that she can make her own decisions and not be experimented on endlessly, creeped on by the staff, and further divided mentally is a huge loss somehow?
Of course she's devastated and traumatized and all those good things, but like seriously she's FREE and ALIVE. Before the finale she was going to die and be sent off with a kid goat as a spiritual guide, and Mark was probably meant to join her if things went to plan.
I get that it's frustrating but like this is a W for Gemma, she's probably about to be given warm food, a bath, and freedom to choose her own clothes for the first time in 2 years by Devon when they spirit her away to safety. Like you think Gemma is about to disappear from the narrative entirely?
Functionally also they could get to experiment with the idea of someone housing 25 other consciousnesses. Imagine if god forbid she tried to reintegrate and got 25 lives worth of trauma dumped on her all at once and she had to chikai bardo and die each of those lives to make peace and come out as a whole person or suffer a brain aneurysm from the combined 25 lifetimes of suffering. There's so many things they could do with Gemma that require her to be an active participant or at least a force that builds in the background and comes crashing down on the severed floor.
The show is so much more interesting if you take what it gives you and let your imagination run free for the characters to suffer more, because the thesis is that pain and suffering are integral to being complete and that severing your pain away for convenience leaves you a shell. Like this point isn't how the journey ends for the characters. (Maybe she does lose her husband, or maybe they figure something out, but for now there's a host of possibilities. I say this even though I think the mark helly relationship is going to drive the rest of the show)
HOLY SHIT?? Imagine you finally see your husband again, who you’ve been told remarried and left you, but you knew he didn’t, after YEARS of being tortured in a basement. And he’s here to finally RESCUE you. And you get outside, you ESCAPE, only for him to STOP. TO NOT FOLLOW YOU BUT TURN AROUND AND LEAVE WITH ANOTHER WOMAN??!!?
If I had a nickel for every show I watched that had an Orpheus and Eurydice parallel, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
